WASHINGTON - Newsweek magazine on Sunday said it may have erred in a May 9 report that said U.S. interrogators desecrated the Koran at Guantanamo Bay, and apologized to victims of deadly violence sparked by the article.
The weekly news magazine said in its May 23 edition that the original source of the allegation was not sure where he saw the assertion that at least one copy of the Koran was flushed down a toilet in an attempt to get detainees to talk.
"We regret that we got any part of our story wrong, and extend our sympathies to victims of the violence and to the U.S. soldiers caught in its midst," Editor Mark Whitaker wrote in the magazine's latest issue, due to appear on U.S. newsstands on Monday.
The report has sparked angry and violent protests across the Muslim world from Afghanistan, where 16 were killed and more than 100 injured, to Pakistan to Indonesia to Gaza.
On Sunday, Afghan Muslim clerics threatened to call for a holy war against the United States in three days unless it handed over the interrogators in question.
The May 9 report quoted unnamed sources as saying that military investigators probing abuse at the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, found that interrogators had placed copies of the Koran on toilets and "in at least one case, flushed a holy book down the toilet."
Newsweek said a Pentagon spokesman told the magazine late last week that the story was wrong and that the military has found no credible evidence to support separate allegations of Koran desecration made by released detainees...
Newsweek (the Britney Spears of journalism) has a headline for next week:
"MUSLIMS GOING CRAZY AGAIN!"
And the subtitle:
"The Koran may be perfect, but our journalists are not!"
Newsweek stands responsable for several deaths due to their dhimmitude.

I just do not understand why our news media is so determined to undermine the west and the war effort. During WWII the news services were supportive, even the movies were involved in keeping up the troops' spirit. But did they care?
The flip side of that 'report' is that, as another poster suggested today, more people will, hopefully, begin to wonder what causes Muslims in the outlands to behave in such a manner.
I didn't notice any American muslims going crazy over this. Maybe some did, I'm just not aware of it.
Remember, too, Osiomo Daniel. A single sentence in this young Nigerian newspaper journalist's story about the '02 Miss Universe Contest caused Muslim rioting that resulted in 200 or so deaths.

Here is something we, at least in the US, can do. Simply go buy a copy of the koran, in paperback form it will set you back less than a double sawbuck. Find your nearest muslim owned restaurant or other business at www.islamicfinder.org (read the various fatwas posted there for a good hearty laugh, better than the made-up letters in Dear Abby) and stroll in and sit down.
Order your kabobs, take out your koran and start reading it. Start writing in it, making annotations like "rubbish," express your opinion (very important that it is opinion only) to the waitstaff, get them riled up enough (should be relatively easy, especially in Dearborn) to ask you to leave their 236,794th holiest site in islam. You may even want to be recording the conversation. Refuse to leave and demand and keep demanding that you be served. If you are lucky they may even call the cops to have you thrown out, nothing like a good police report on your side.
Then sue for violations of your civil rights (CAIR tactics in reverse) and emotional distress for good measure. No one can be denied their civil rights for expressing their reasonable opinion about religion. CAIR likes to equate themselves with the NAACP, well there are a lot of judicial precedents about businesses open to the public (puts them under the purview of the Commerce Clause and jurisdiction of the Federal Courts) and throwing out patrons who the proprietor just doesn't seem to like, proprietors lose big time. If it is a chain business, then class action is a possibility.

I do not think anyone has noticed just how unlikely the original story was. Have you ever tried to flush a book down a toilet?
