Pakistan: Jihadis destroy music shops

The Islamic injunction against music is the one I personally found hardest to believe. I believe that, if pursued to this level it will be the tenet that finally convinces the unconvinced of the nature of the beastie that we are dealing with.

Although much of the background was reminiscent of the resistance against the Nazis (the city of New Vienna for a start) the death of music and song owed more to Islam than anything else.

Because there is a lot of music from Middle Eastern and Asian countries (much of which is Jewish or Indian), and the ubiquitous Yusef Islam (to think that at 12 years of age I was once part of a "Girl Band" whose only song was Matthew and Son. Needless to say we didn't last long) not many people are aware of this injunction, which was discussed a few days ago, OT with some of the Moslem posters. A lot of Moslems deny it's existence, or ague that it applies only to certain insruments or styles.

So wine is forbidden, and song, and the company of any ladies, be they Cheerful or not. And the Koran is the only book one needs.

Omar Khayyam, Firdowsi, Sa'adi, Hafiz, with love and the roses and bulbuls of Gulistan in their minds -- could they be called good Muslims? Or were they good poets, happening to be born into Islamic societies and doing the best they could, in a most un-Islamic spirit and, in at least the case of Firdowsi, distinctly in opposition to arabization?

Credit for the verses quoted also must go, inpart, to Edward FitzGerald -- and he was as little a Muslim as Fitzhugh Lane or Ugolino della Gherardesca.

I used to know a Muslim co-worker. Every day he would listen to only sports radio in his car. Never music. He was supposedly a "moderate." If Islam had it's way, Beethoven's Fifth would get you shot. So much for "moderate" Islam.

I had a Muslim lodger who was Sudanese. One day a man was walking by and I said 'Look, that man looks just like Elvis'. He turned around and asked 'Who is Elvis?'. Despite living in the West for several years it turned out that he had never even heard of either Elvis Presley or the Beatles. He was aware of the fact that lots of singers were black but he couldn't name any.

Surprising and not surprising, as nothing really is surprising about the invocations of sharia any more.

So now we know that not only are minorities to be oppressed in islam/sharia, that women must wear veils, but that music is outlawed as well. And this is not coming from radicals only - but also from those lovable Sunni moderates, like Ia and Shirki, to say nothing of Brownfinger.

It's funny, but I remember another society that was generally reviled for the same restrictions.

Afghanistan, pre-invasion.

But what could the core sympathies of our Sunni posters - and thus, presumably of that gentle moderate Sunni worldview - have in common with sharia Afghanistan.

I believe using the 'trolls' [I guess Muslims who seriously attempt defending Islam's teachings] using them in revealing the Truth about Islam.

The BEST revealer of all of them - is their allah.

And if by chance a young person gets 'wind of allah' - and decides NOT to join his so-called 'holy war' - are we able to measure the number of lives possibly being saved? or the pain of the families of the victims of Islamic 'terrorists'?

Hugh, et al. This is not a defense of Islam, (forbid). An explanation of the minutae of differences in Islamic ideology.

Shi'a Islam does not forbid Music. To my knowledge
neither does much of the Sunni world.

However the Deobandis, the Wahhabis, the Salafi's (Salaf means "original" who consider themselves purists or true Muslims and are the backbone of the Muslim Brotherhood, in all of it's manifestations be it Al Qaeda, Taliban, MMA (in Pakistan) or Islamic Jihad, do consider any temporal enjoyment to be evil, which includes music and anything modern (except of course weapons and technology like the computer and internet and GPS, which enables them to wage Jihad).

Ostensbily if they succeed, they would then destroy all technology and modern innovations.

Granny you are so correct. Man does not live by bread alone, Islam impoverishes the soul and deprives man of joy.

No trolls are good trolls, but I think their absence is due to the subject matter being discussed. What troll wants to admit his/her religion prohibits the beauty and joy of music?

Of course, if Muslims and others are concerned about the sex and bad language of pop songs, they can always listen to Christian radio!

The Muslims went on a rampage through Indonesia a few months back (in Jakarta I think), where their are many "secular" Muslims (nominal). The true Muslims trashed clubs, destroyed property etc and forbid the playing of music.
