Pakistan: More Anti-US Protests Planned

Never mind that it probably never happened; more protests are in the offing, from Dawn, "MMA announces plan for anti-US protests," with thanks to Fanabba.

ISLAMABAD - A largely attended anti-US convention on Sunday announced a series of protest demonstrations in the country and across world after observing the May 27 international protest day against the desecration of the Holy Quran by American interrogators in the Guantanamo Bay prison. The convention organized by the Islamabad chapter of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal and presided over by Qazi Hussain Ahmed was attended by members of the components of the MMA and other religious and social organizations.

The speakers rejected withdrawal of a report about the desecration incident by the Newsweek magazine and demanded handing over of the culprits for their trial in accordance with Islamic laws. Speaking on the occasion, Qazi Hussain said that desecrators of Holy Quran, the divine book preaching love, peace, justice, equality and moderation, and their supporters would be chased all over the world and made to repent their misdeeds.

He said: “We can restore Muslim Ummat’s respect only through unity and changing our rulers for which we have to launch a targeted movement by peacefully taking to the streets.” He assured that the protests would be peaceful and target of their abhorrence would not be local minorities, particularly Christians, who, he said, were an oppressed and poverty-stricken community.

The MMA president announced that women and children would hold a big protest demonstration after an all-male demonstration on May 27. Jamaat Dawat wal Tauheed chief Professor Hafiz Saeed termed the world-wide wave of protests as a blessing in disguise which could pave the way for Muslim unity...

While Islamist fanatics and ignorant Westerners sow panic over the alleged desecration of a Koran at Guantanamo Bay, no one mentions a startling fact: When it comes to destruction of the Koran, there's no question who the world champion is--the government of Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi state religion is the primitive and austere Wahhabi version of Islam, which defines many traditional Islamic practices as idolatrous. Notably, the state bans the importation of Korans published elsewhere. When foreign pilgrims arrive at the Saudi border by the millions for the annual journey to Mecca, what happens to the non-Saudi Korans they are carrying? The border guards confiscate them, to be shredded, pulped, or burned. Beautiful bindings and fine paper are viewed as a particular provocation--all are destroyed. (This on top of the spiritual vandalism the Saudis perpetrate, by inserting anti-Jewish and anti-Christian squibs into the Korans they publish in foreign languages, as Stephen Schwartz documented in our issue of September 27, 2004.)

This behavior isn't a recent innovation, by the way. Here's an account of how the Saudis carried on when they seized the city of Taif in 1802. It's taken from an unimpeachable Islamic source, the compilation Advice for the Muslim, edited by the Turkish scholar Hilmi Isik and published by Hakikat Kitabevi in Istanbul:

The Wahhabis tore up the copies of the Koran . . . and other Islamic books they took from libraries, mosques and houses, and threw them down on the ground. They made sandals from the gold-gilded leather covers of the Koran and other books and wore them on their filthy feet. There were verses of the Koran and other sacred writings on those leather covers. The pages of those valuable books thrown around were so numerous that there was no space to step in the streets of Taif. . . . The Wahhabi bandits, who were gathered from the deserts for looting and who did not know the Koran, tore up all the copies they found and stamped on them. Only three copies of the Koran were saved from the plunder of a major town, Taif.

No wonder anti-Wahhabi Muslims say "the Saudis print the Koran to destroy it." They print it and they destroy it in a daily desecration that makes Newsweek's retracted Guantanamo allegation look trivial by comparison.

The word "disguise" says it all.

"as a blessing in disguise which could pave the way for Muslim unity..."

"Adherents of militant Islam account for some 15-20 percent of the Muslim world..."

What a coincidence!!!

May 27th is also International Burn and Dishonor a Koran Day.

It is on my calender. It should be on yours.

" the divine book preaching love, peace, justice, equality and moderation, and their supporters would be chased all over the world and made to repent their misdeeds."

Why does this make me laugh? Love? Peace? Holy cow!

I'm confused: Shouldn't the demonstrations come after the Koran flushing? Can we still flush, even after the demonstration?

Unified by a lie.

Sounds like the standard operating procedure for Islam.

One question:

If your dog happened to chew up a copy of the Koran, what would the Muslims want done?

(One of my pooches, as a puppy, once gnawed-to-shreds nice hardback copy of Rilke's "The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Briggs", but I could leave an extra copy of the Qu'ran around to see what happens...)

Anybody out there with a pot bellied pig?

Respect is a two-way street. For some reason none will ever come our way...it would be un-Islamic!

Why the separate male and female protests? Surely they're not afraid of fornication in the streets? Shirki tells me that would never happen under sharia, and why would Shirki lie?
