WASHINGTON - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, seeking to stem Muslim anger over alleged desecration of the Koran by US troops, on Thursday called disrespect for the holy book "abhorrent" and promised to punish offenders.Rice used an appearance before a Senate committee to issue a special opening statement addressed "directly to Muslims in America and throughout the world" on the reported incidents at the US 'war on terror' prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
"Disrespect for the holy Koran is not now, nor has it ever been, nor will it ever be, tolerated by the United States," she said. "We honor the sacred books of all the world's great religions. Disrespect for the holy Koran is abhorrent to us all."
Muslims have been enraged by a report that interrogators in Guantanamo placed copies of the Koran in a toilet to rattle prisoners. Seven people have been killed in protests in Afghanistan.
Rice said US military authorities were fully investigating the allegations that have also drawn sharp criticism in Pakistan, a staunch US ally. "If they are proven true we will take approrpriate action."
She said Americans "share and understand" the concerns of Muslims but added, "I am asking that all our friends arund the world reject incitement to violence by those who would mischaracterize our intentions."
Rice said religious freedom and protection of a person's right to worship freely was one of the founding principles of the United States and something taken very seriously here...
In our latest update, Brit Hume reported on Special Report tonight that it was a Gitmo detainee who ripped pages of the Qur'an and flushed it down the toilet in order to clog it in protest.
I agree with the fair and balanced reporter that an islamic terrorist prisoner was responsible for clogging the toilet. Prisoners behave this way out of boredom and to make a scene. The military guards or interrogators didn’t flush a Koran, an insurgent prisoner did.
Interesting claim. I'm not sure how one could mischaraterize the incident of US agents desecrating the Holy Book of over a billion people. It should be extremely clear from the countless reports of prisoner abuse that torture is systematic and deliberate in the Global War of Terrorism.

Nothing in the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice) about "abusing a Koran", Bible, etc. in the materials about 'destroying the propaganda of the enemy'.
In this particular case, though, they could be:
A) More discreet. (What happens in Gitmo, stays in Gitmo.)
B) Smarter. (Not just SEE: A) The Koran is nothing to trying to 'insult' actively.
Ignoring it is the true insult.
And NOT supplying it to prisoners in the first place- because it could be used as a tool of terror:
1) set fire to,
2) used to clog plumbing,
3) as a method to commit suicide by plugging one's windpipe with a mouthful of chewed Koran,

I've got a different perspective on what Rice said and on the Bush Administration strategy in regards to Islam. (Granted it's my opinion, but here goes-)

If the Bush Administration and Secretary of State Rice admitted publicly that Islam and the Qur'an are evil, then several things would probably happen:
1) Over one billion Muslims would go berserk. How many people died today because of a rumor about the Qur'an and a toilet? 9 wasn't it? Bush and Rice and the U.S. publicly critizing Islam would probably be considered the ultimate "aggression" against Islam by the Muslim world.
2) Our intelligence sources would dry up over night. In order to effectively pursue this war on Islamic terrorists, the U.S./Coalition need intelligence from Muslims about other extremist Muslims.
3) Pakistan's Islamic population would go berserk and together with Pakistan's Islamic terrorists they would probably overthrow Mushariff for siding with the U.S. If that happened, then Islamic terrorists would be in possession of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal. That's a catastrophe in the making.
So, instead of openly declaring Islam as evil, the administration just treats Islam like it treats any other religion. The war in Iraq and Afghanistan go on. Progress is made admidst some set backs and a lot of bloodshed. This is war after all. People are going to die. The new Iraqi government takes shape. The infrastructure gets rebuilt. Through cooperation democracy is being hammered out.
So while the politicians conduct the war, people/media in the West-like us-research, learn and teach others about the REAL ISLAM. We educate the public slowly. As aggravating as it is, I think we need to play this out as is...for now.
Later, after our intelligence officers have had time to learn Arabic and to infiltrate Islamic terrorist networks, then the politicians can announce the truth about Islam. With any luck, the public will already have figured it out by then. Also, hopefully, many Muslims (in the West) will have been freed from the bonds of Islam. IMO.

Radioactive Missiles Found In Iraq

U.S. Army troops operating at a former Iraqi air base recently made a startling discovery: Russian made missiles marked with radioactive warning signs.
Army bomb disposal troops confirmed using Geiger counters that the missiles are indeed radioactive.
The discovery is not, however, considered the long sought after "smoking gun" of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction.
The missiles appear to be part of a cache of weapons supplied to Iraq before the 1991 Gulf war.
The Russian made R-60, NATO code name AA-8 Aphid, air-to-air missiles are part of a huge stockpile of former Iraqi Air Force munitions uncovered in over a dozen concrete bunkers.
The Russian made missiles are over 6 feet long and each carries 1.6 kilograms or about 3.5 pounds of radioactive uranium wrapped around a high explosive warhead.
The uranium is not pure enough nor in large enough quantity to be a nuclear warhead but it is dangerous enough, as you can see from the label:

Confessions of Al-Qaida Suspects Who Allegedly Planned Attacks Aired

AMMAN, Jordan - Al-Qaida plotted bomb and poison gas attacks against the U.S. Embassy and other targets in Jordan, suspects confessed in a videotape that aired Monday on Jordanian state television. A commentator said the plotters hoped to kill 80,000 people.
One of the alleged conspirators, Azmi al-Jayousi, said he was acting on the orders of Abu-Musab al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian wanted by the United States for allegedly organizing terrorists to fight U.S. troops in Iraq on behalf of al-Qaida. U.S. officials have offered a $10 million reward for his capture.
Al-Jayousi, identified as the head of a Jordanian terror cell, said he met al-Zarqawi in neighboring Iraq to plan the attacks.
The 20-minute taped program contained what were described as confessions by the suspects, who were arrested a month ago. Officials said four terror suspects believed linked to the conspiracy died in a shootout with police in Amman last week.

A major achievement: US removes 1.7 metric tons of radioactive material from Iraq

The material was taken from a former nuclear research facility on 23 June, after being packaged by 20 experts from the US Energy Department's secret laboratories.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A roadside bomb containing sarin nerve agent exploded near a U.S. military convoy, the U.S. military said Monday. Two people were treated for ``minor exposure,'' but no serious injuries were reported.
``The Iraqi Survey Group confirmed today that a 155-millimeter artillery round containing sarin nerve agent had been found,'' said Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, the chief military spokesman in Iraq. ``The round had been rigged as an IED (improvised explosive device) which was discovered by a U.S. force convoy.
``A detonation occurred before the IED could be rendered inoperable. This produced a very small dispersal of agent,'' he said.
The Iraqi Survey Group is a U.S. organization whose task was to search for weapons of mass destruction after the ouster of Saddam Hussein in last year's invasion.

WARSAW, Poland (AP) - Polish troops have found two warheads in Iraq believed to contain a deadly nerve agent, but it is not clear what period the weapons came from, the Defense Ministry said Thursday.
