Another happy Muslim marriage in Wahhabiland. From Arab News, with thanks to Skeetstreet:
DAMMAM - A Saudi man in his fifties locked his wife inside the house storage room for a month because she refused to allow him to marry another wife, Al-Watan reported. The fifty-year-old man went to a family to ask for their daughter's hand in marriage, however the family insisted that his current wife would have to make the request. Not surprisingly when he asked his wife she refused. After several attempts at convincing her failed, he locked her in the storage room for a month and cut off the electricity. The wife's apparent refusal was not based on jealousy, but because he has had violent tendencies with her and she would hate to see another victim fall into his abusive grip. His violent behavior has not been restricted to this incarceration as the wife previously said that he has several times threatened to kick her out of the house, and not pay the expenses for her and her children.
This story is a wonderful reminder that there are people of courage and compassion in the world willing to put the welfare of others ahead of their own. I just wish that women in the developing world would show more courage in the face of social and religious pressure, instead of reinforcing them, especially whilst raising children.
Speaking as a woman from a developing nation I must admit that Westernised men have often been at the vanguard of liberating women in traditional socities as was the case in my family several genrations ago. It is so unfortunate to see so many young men return to Islam. Otherwise I would be working in the fields instead of at this computer.
Brownnie- bombers future?
Jerks like this one are to be found all over the world, although their reasons for being abusive may not be because #1 wife won't let him get a second wife.
The article doesn't mention if he was charged with any crimes, which in the United States would include domestic abuse and false imprisonment, at a minimum. I suppose that he really doesn't have to worry about being charged with anything, does he?

About Islamic slavery
I admire this Saudi woman for her courage and compassion. She put the interests of another woman before her own needs. God bless her and protect her.
So I imagine he is well within his rights to act like this, and his poor wife just has to accept this treatment. That's the key difference between our world and that backward barbarian one. And yet you constantly hear silly Muslim women bleat about how they have so many rights under Islam.
The right to submit to inhumane treatment. Treatment that if you gave to your dog or cat in Western countries, you'd get arrested.
The right to not have your opinion or wishes viewed as valid by your husband.
The right to be beaten by your husband if he even perceives you are disobedient.
The right to have to put up with three other wives in your household and relegated to some brood-mare status.
Yeah, some rights!
Tabari IX:113 “Allah permits you to shut them in separate rooms and to beat them, but not severely. If they abstain, they have the right to food and clothing. Treat women well for they are like domestic animals and they possess nothing themselves. Allah has made the enjoyment of their bodies lawful in his Qur’an.”
But, you just misunderstand islam. This is because of woman's elevated status in islam.
/sarcasm
Ah yes, Carolyn, I understand now. Woman in Islam is elevated above the status of a cockroach, but not higher than her husband's goats, donkeys or camels. What more could she possibly want?
Wonder if this Saudi guy, and all other Saudis, and all the sheiks and mullahs and imams who hold the authority of interpreting Islam, and who dictate the misogynist laws, policies and practices all over the Islamic world (and increasingly also, in Western countries), represent the "intelligent and informed view of Islam" propagated by Judith Butler, the idol of academic women's studies all over the Western world and the grand proponent of sexual freedoms and gay rights?
"I have recently learned that your organization is compiling dossiers on professors at U.S. academic institutions who oppose the Israeli occupation and its brutality, actively support Palestinian rights of self-determination as well as a more informed and intelligent view of Islam than is currently represented in the U.S. media. I would be enormously honored to be counted among those who actively hold these positions and would like to be included in the list of those who are struggling for justice during these times. Brave woman. Anyone want to play the odds on her getting real justice? (Reminds me of the justice done in the case where an Iranian woman went to court, and asked that her husband be told to beat her only once a day)
OT - But I just wanted to let everyone know that they had better prepare for India turning Islamic in the future....
http://in.rediff.com/news/2005/may/09kanch.htm
There is now a non constitutional Muslim board in India with parallel courts for muslims. And the politicians couldn't care less because they want to keep their votes.....
I claim Antarctica for all non-muslims....
Absolution:
"Brave woman. Anyone want to play the odds on her getting real justice? (Reminds me of the justice done in the case where an Iranian woman went to court, and asked that her husband be told to beat her only once a day)"
Brave woman! I she still alive?
Whatever happened to womans lib?
Brown-bomber doesn't answer me. I'm so confused...
Robert, the abuse of domestic servants in Saudi & Kuwait is unbelievable. We have to bring that out into the open, how come the MSM doesn't tackle it?
Judith Butler obviously gets the 'moonbat of the month award".
I don't have any 'gold-stars' for that, but it shows the 'elevated' status that we give women in western society: we let them do just about everything...
After all, who wants to be called a "male chauvinist pig, racist, Islamophobe,or worst of all: fundamentalist Christian?"
From the article:
... this has the faint malodour of editorializing!
Of course she could not be jealous, because jealousy would imply that she doubts that her husband might treat hear inequitably after the new wife enters the "family"! And of course, men in Islam are only permitted to marry more than one, if he can guarantee equal treatment. So of course, there shall be no evidence (or even insinuation) of jealousy in Wahhabiland polygamous marriages!
Of course, will no one mention how inequitably Al-Uswa-ul-Husna's last days were spent almost exclusively with his youngest bride?
Oh, oh, oh, and I almost missed this tidbit... the wife's apparent refusal was not based on jealousy... Wow! APPARENT refusal? To, me it was, uh, obvious. But, of course, journalists should not draw conclusions now, should they?
Kali:
If the status of women in "the West" is better than it is in the developing world, it has more to do with western women fighting for their rights than it does with western men "liberating" them.
There are women in the developing world who are trying to fight the myscogeny they endure (one such website is listed along the left side of JW's home page -- Dr. Homa Dabari's) and these women deserve our wholehearted support. Unfortunately, dingbats like Judith Butler prefer to identify with pseudovictims like the Palestinians who are no friends to either womens' rights nor gay rights.
I also note that countries located within what we used to call the Indian subcontinent have all had women prime ministers at various times -- India (Indira Ghandi), Pakistan (Benizeer Bhutto) and Sri Lanka (can't recall how her name was spelled)and hope this is something we can take heart in as, generally, the empowerment of women is fundamental to a fair, open and just society.

Sirimavo Bandaranaike, three times Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, was the first woman in the world (1960)to hold the office of prime minister. Her daughter (Chandrika Kumaratunga)later became President then Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
