KHARTOUM, Sudan, May 9, 2005 (AP) -- Sudanese authorities indefinitely suspended the pro-Islamist Al Wifaq daily for running articles considered blasphemous, the official Sudan Media Center said Monday.The order was issued by Sudan's press and publications attorney, Yasser Bashir Bukhari, and follows Sunday's arrest of editor Mohamed Taha Mohamed Ahmed for violating a three day suspension order and ignoring another ruling banning the media from writing about the case.
His paper will remain closed until a Khartoum court rules in his own case.
Ahmed first appeared before Khartoum's Northern Court on Thursday for republishing articles from the Internet that questioned the parentage of the Islam's Prophet Muhammad. He denied the charges and apologized in a letter to the press....
Hundreds of angry Sudanese gathered Thursday outside the court demanding the death sentence for Ahmed. Blasphemy and insulting Islam can bring the death penalty in Sudan, which has been governed by strict Islamic Sharia law since 1983.
A "pro-Islamist" editor hoist by his own misapprehended petard. Not a fable for our times, not even a cautionary tale -- just one more true and telling story, from dar al-Islam.

When will the West learn that there is no free press where Islam pre-dominates? Islam, be it in Sudan or elsewhere, is hopelessly rigid in it's orthodoxy. While this rigidity gives it strength and power today, it guarantees it's extinction tomorrow. In the age of the internet and wireless connections to the web, Islam realizes it's time is almost up. Control the information that people receive and you control the people. Like an animal that subsists entirely on one type of plant, Islam is the modern equivalent of a tired one-trick pony act that nobody cares about. "Submit or die" is the call of all false religion. I'll choose none of the above thank you very much.
