ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - A suicide bomber set off explosives Friday in the midst of Shiite Muslims reciting the Quran, killing at least 20 and wounding dozens gathered for a religious festival at a shrine near the capital.The motive was not immediately clear, but there are frequent sectarian attacks in this Islamic country by extremist elements of the Sunni and minority Shiite sects.
An AP photographer at the scene counted at least 20 bodies, many in pieces. An intelligence official said at least 20 people were killed and 150 were wounded.
The bomb ripped through hundreds of worshippers as they were reciting from the Muslim holy book beneath tents at the Bari Imam shrine outside Islamabad.
“It was like hell,” said Syed Muktar Hussain Shah, 40, who had been waiting for a prominent Shiite leader, Hamid Moasvi, to address the gathering when the bomb went off. “I fell down ... when I woke up I saw dead bodies around me.”
“None of the bodies was intact,” said Dr. Wahid Abbas, who helped treat the wounded. “Some had legs blown off, some had their hands blown off.”
He and other witnesses said police collected the head of a suspected suicide bomber. Authorities did not immediately confirm that information...
Shiite worshippers, weeping and moaning, beat their chests in grief. Some clashed with police after officers charged the crowd with their batons to clear the way for ambulances.
Many also chanted, “Down with America!”...

I was satirising how when a terrorist outrage is commited against non Muslims by Muslims, for example, the Madrid train bombings, we are told by many Muslims and people on the left that we have to examine the 'root causes' of this outrage. The Sunni Muslims are majority in Pakistan and they are the ones mainly responsible for the bombings against the Shiite Muslims who are the minority.
In Iraq, the Sunni Muslims are in the minority yet they are behind in the majority of the bombings against the majority Shiite Muslims.

There are two things here....where we are and where we will go to.
Today, It is important to keep a sense of perspective. If all muslims behaved like your model then there would be unlimited paranoi.
Of course the world is not perfect...but is it all the fault of the muslim...ofcourse not.
The infidel has every right to be comfortable and live in peace...and this must apply all over.
As for tomorrow, the muslim world recognises that Muhammed was a man of immense vision...a man of god....of Allah if you will...the muslim recognises this...and if his "polices" are watered down then ofcourse this will be resisted.
That Islam is going to have more & more influence in the world is true....and I have been saying it for a while here.
I have a vision of a USME (united states of the ME) but I think that Eurabia and Islamic States of America will come about first.
The Muslim will learn and adapt to/in the West first and then bring the global vision of a stable Islam to the ME.
This will be a mix of Sharia/democracy globally as the majority of people on Earth (Muslims) will demand it.
Everything thing else will have a lower priority.

So where are we today, wonderful short skirted catholic Catherine "am I looking for sympathy from you " No ofcourse not, I am putting forward my own perspective of life, please don't get confused, I'm not weak I have had to mix it with the best of them.
It is true that my backyard is no longer the safe haven that it was when I got first got married and moved to Lahore all those years ago, it was so different from the UK, but I felt at home immediately, it was like being wrapped with the feel & the smell of all my ancestors rolled into one. It was immense ....I was home.
In those days we had one of the bigger homes too, my father-in-law had a bit of influence and position and everybody respected each other, divisions between shias, sunnis, Ahmeddiyas were such a blur no one really gave a damn. When I first set foot in that house he called me princess and my hubby said I was his lucky charm, life was great.
We started up a litte business (yes muslims do work for a living too) which helped pay for our two children's education (no free education here unless it's to madrassa) both of whom are at uni now.
Over the years things started to change little by litte, with a lot of military personnel moving in close by. They had friends, mullahs, police coming & going and you could sense a little bit of an atmosphere. Ofcourse things were a lot worse in Karachi and some of them moved to Lahore and used to talk about the sunni/shite divide and in some sense brought it with them.
After 9/11 the atmosphere changed dramatically, ...although lines were drawn in amongst the racial tensions "down with Amerrika" was a common theme. There were/are many here who could not get over the fact that the "beautiful society" created by the Taliban was being broken up. It was rumored that Mullah Omar had a blanket that was used by the prophet himself (pbuh), all the die hards wanted to touch it, and then they felt invincible, they could and would beat the Ammricka like the "russi".
It didn't turn out like that of course but it is said tha Mullah Omar still has the blanket (together with a machine gun no doubt).
Catherine, the biggest change has been the sheer increase in the number of people in Lahore. No longer the big wide open spaces and ofcourse the Ahmeddia have fallen out of favour too.
Ofcourse I am still princess of the big house, but my daughter is challenging that by being cheeky. We still have a lot of fun and try to get on with our lives, but after I saw my friend beaten my attitude hardened.
It was cute of you you to bring that post back, it reminded me a little of the power of Islam which ofcourse is immense at a spiritual level, can't say much about economically but maybe the kalipha may explain that one day...LOL.
A lot of what I said then may become true, whether you like it or not Islam is growing at a frighening rate, it will take over house by house, street by street , town by town and then country by country. I have seen it....I have felt it.....right here in my home town.
All this may culminate in a huge holy war....who knows, I just want it to be the way it used to be...but then there is the MMA. They have their business and they have powerful friends, they claim to be the "pure and are the sunni" & like it or not they are coming to a house near you....just like they have next to mine.
