The Hijab in Pakistan and Norway

An interesting discussion that comes to us thanks to the Norwegian Kafir:

Sanctioned by the holy text of the Quran, hijab, or any item of woman's clothing, especially that which cancels her beauty, is assumed to protect women from men's unpleasant advances in the public sphere, where she might be seen as a sexual object if she roams around without hijab. The real-life experiences of millions of Muslim women show that the hijab provides no protection against unpleasant sexual advances of men and that a variety of social consequences result when women in different cultures are made to wear hijab. The two different cultures that I am going to consider here are those of Pakistan and Norway...

In Pakistan the hijab is simply unable to protect women from being seen as sexual objects in public. Women with or without hijab, any kind of hijab, are stared at, followed and harassed by men on roads and streets and at bus stations, shopping malls, and other public places. This harassment of women in public places is known in Pakistan as "Eve-teasing." Women in Pakistan experience Eve-teasing wherever they go in the country, although there are variations from region to region, city to city, and even within regions and cities. For example, in the northwestern region, the conservative and supposedly most Islamic region of Pakistan, women without or with any kind of hijab are likely to be stared at by nearly ten out of every ten men on roads, streets, shopping malls, etc., while in such cities as Islamabad and Lahore women are likely to be stared at by, for example, four out of every ten men. Similarly, women in some regions are most likely to be followed by strange men almost from their doorsteps to their destinations and then back to their doorstep every time they leave their homes. Women in some other regions of the country might not be followed every time but often, occasionally, or at least sometimes when they go out in public places. When these women are in a good mood, they jokingly say that they've acquired a free escort or bodyguard. But in fact this is no joke. It scares women to death. If their father, brother, or husband comes to know about their "escort or bodyguard," the women must surely expect that limitations will be placed on their right to movement outside the home, or, even worse, that they will be the victims of honor killing...

When I came to Norway in 2002, the first cultural shock I got was that men in public places did not stare at women. I had observed and even experienced so much staring by men in Pakistan that I thought it was a universal reality. When I found that it was not so in Norway , I was upset for some time. I thought; "Am I so ugly that Norwegian men don't even give me a second look?" Soon I realized that men in Norway just don't stare at any women in public places. Imagine my feeling of excitement in my exposure to Norwegian society when I discovered that Eve-teasing is not a universal reality. This is one of the most cherished discoveries I have ever made whole my life...

Read it all.

In short, hijab is neither a universal instrument to protect women from men’s unwelcome sexual advances in public places, nor it is a universal mark of identity for a Muslim woman. It is certainly not an obligation. At best, it is an option. All those who respect human rights must condemn those who promote hijab as identity of or an obligation for a Muslim woman. Similarly, all those who seek to impose hijab on Muslim women need to be prevented from doing so by state intervention, wherever possible, just as in France .

The requirement of the hijab removes personal responsibility from men and choice from women and girls as do arranged marriages that are often so unhappy, violent, and dangerous.

It was shocking to note how men in Muslim countries can stalk women with impunity as is described in the practice of "Eve teasing" described in the article. Modesty is demanded of women, but men are allowed just about anything...

One of the more insidious lies put about by Muslims is that a hijab makes men respect women more. It's nonsense. Muslim men do not, cannot respect women.

And why should respect be earned by covering yourself up.

In any case, when you look at the likes of Abu Hamza, Omar Bakri and Khaled Sheikh Mohammed, you wonder why it isn't the men who should have to put a sack over their heads!

Oh but women in Islam have so many rights! The hijab is so freeing! ROTFLMAO! God, Islam is so unbelievably whacked out stupid. It would almost be hilarious if it weren't so disturbing and sick.

Since Muslim men cannot seem to exert any sexual self-control, they ought to be outfitted with a male "chastity belt." It involves a small, non-lethal electrical shock...

When Christian symbols are being challenged and systematically removed from OUR countries on the grounds that they offend certain groups, and we all know who that is don't we, I can say NOTHING offends me more than to see hijabs etc bobbing around our streets, talk about "IN YOUR FACE". They are FAR MORE VISIBLE than a small cross hung around someones neck.
Has anyone seen the photo's of the Muslim WPCs recruited into our police force, with their lovely black and white check trimmed headscarves. instead of the standard uniform headgear.

It will be interesting to see how these policewomen will go about arresting one of their Muslim brothers and will they need 2 of them to testify against one of their men in court... lol

When the DBC ran that story some weeks ago they showed part of that picture, (2 women). I saved the page to show a colleague and when I called it up an hour later the picture had changed to a black and white shot of riot duty.
The outfit is ridiculous. The reason policewomen changed from the old uniform tie to the clip on jabot was so that there was nothing for a villan to grip and strangle them with. There's plenty to grip and strangle there.

I hope the ban on hoodies in Bluewater (and my local Boots) is extended for the same reasons (id on CCTV) to hijabettes and ninjas. But then it will be challenged under equal ops, and the verdict will be that no face covering can be banned. So every burglar in town will be free to wear his mask, stripy jumper and sack labeled swag openly.

Hey Granny

When u censor my comments how come True Brit allowed to link to BNP (britians biggest gang of thugs). If u donot know True Brit is motto of BNP guys. U may see them wearing True Brit shirts in Britain as if taunting Britons of non-white backgrounds. BNP as a whole is a racist gang of thugs who masquerade as a political party. It has only recently directed it's attention to Muslims. How come when smbdy links to BNP you guys donot censor. Moreover ur links with Pat Robertson & 700 club have led me to question the real motive of this site. Are you guys with the Caucasian supremacy ( caucasian is a misnomer for a white becoz Indians are also Caucasians) whacos like BNP or Christian fanactic Christian Coalation?

FM:
Has it entered your mind that like we go looking on Islamic websites for info we can also go to other sites for info... As you are aware nothing much of any worth is put out by our MSN so the BNP site is one place stories can be found that you won't see anywhere else, like Chris Donnell and other British lads that have been murdered by RACISTS and whose stories have hardly been heard of in the UK unlike the Steven Lawrence case and a couple of others that STILL get media coverage years later.

As for my nick it was a play on "True grit" the J Wayne film, so don't go making assumptions thank you.

Linking to the BNP is bad for this website! We dont need the BNP fascists on our side. They are Jew haters and racists. Robert Specncer, please consider this plea! They are like the Aryan Nation or David Dukes of the UK!

FM, I can't censor your comments, only Robert Spencer can do that. If you recall I (and other posters) wanted you to be heard, which is why we urged you to pick a nickname you could be sure would remain. I'm glad that your posts have stayed.

So far as the BNP is concerned there has been a lot of comment on JW & DW explaining to our US posters how unacceptable and evil their views are, and how impossible it would be to vote for them last week. I once described it as lying down with dogs and getting up not just with fleas but bubonic plague.
Despite their being the only party to recognise the dangers of Islam no one here forgets their roots in the old National Front, and I am old enough to remember when the National Front was Colin Jordan's British Nazi Party. And I don't think the similar name is a coincidence either.
But if the photo True Brit posted was "censored" by the BBC, and can now only be found on the BNP site then use of the information does not constitute approval of the supplier. I searched the Met police site for it, and could not find it. We do go onto Islamic sites for information as well.

I am amazed that people really believe the BNP is 'evil'? I know many members of the BNP who would not be out of place at a Vicars tea party. The ethos of the BNP is to retain the national character of the indeginous British nation. I have never heard any one associated with them advocate violence, murder, rape, stoning, amputation or decapitation. Before you condemn anyone learn more about them. Some clever chinese philosopher said...'Do not judge a man until you have walked a mile in his shoes'.

Rip - don't know what planet you're living on.

The BNP are a white supremacist party. Can't you see that that is wrong?

I spend long hours trying to persuade lefties that to be anti-Islam is not racist because, unlike skin colour, Islam is freely chosen. It is very undermining to be linked in anyway with Fascists like the BNP.
