U.S. Marines Push Toward Syrian Border

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Hundreds of U.S. Marines pushed through a lawless region on the Syrian frontier Tuesday after battling past well-armed militants fighting from basements, rooftops and sandbag bunkers. Insurgents kidnapped the provincial governor as a bargaining chip.

As many as 100 insurgents were killed in the first 48 hours of Operation Matador, as American troops cleared villages along the meandering Euphrates then crossed in rafts and on a pontoon bridge, the U.S. command said. Many of the dead remained trapped under rubble after attack planes and helicopter gunships pounded their hideouts....

At the Pentagon, Marine Lt. Gen. James T. Conway, director of operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters Tuesday that the assault in the northern Jazirah Desert had run into well-equipped and trained fighters.

"There are reports that these people are in uniforms, in some cases are wearing protective vests, and there's some suspicion that their training exceeds what we have seen with other engagements further east," he said...

Hmm, Frontpage depicts Margolis as a "leftist",how strange. A couple of years ago (5 or more, before 9-11) he was ranting against Marxist Feminists and RAWA (Revolutionary Association for Women in Afghanistan) for daring to militate against the miserable plight of Afghan Women. Then 9-11 and Laura B takes up the cause (for less than a week) come the invasion and women are still oppressed, raped, honor killed hiding in burqa's in the countryside certainly but in Kabul as well, and where is Laura now, where is George where are the good Christian Conservatives whining about the ongoing mistreatment of women in Afghanistan (or anywhere else in the Muslim world)? I hear no voices. When Saddam was in power Women could go to university, walk freely without Chador (Hijab) but those days are history now, we have freed Iraq for the Mullahcracy and it is becoming a carbon copy of Iran.

Yeah, Giaour. Sodom Insane, who was willing to pay 10K for a dead child of a US diplomat back in 1991, was the great liberator and hero of the Iraqi people; which is why they fought so fiercely for him, and wracked up millions and millions of imperialist casualties in defense of the heart of pan-Arabism--Not.
