Afghans hold Pakistanis for plot to kill U.S. envoy

Pakistani duplicity update from Reuters, with thanks to Fanabba:

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghan security forces have arrested three Pakistanis for allegedly planning to assassinate the U.S. ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, an Afghan government official said on Monday.

The Pakistanis, who were suspected of being linked to a Pakistani Islamic militant group, were arrested in the eastern province of Laghman on Saturday, the day before Khalilzad made a visit there, said the official, who did not want to be identified.

"They admitted they were there to try to get Khalilzad," he said....

The Afghan official said the three men were caught in the Laghman's Charkhakan district with two AK-47 rifles and a rocket-propelled grenade launcher....

The official said it was unclear to which militant group the men belonged. "But we are pretty sure they are linked to a Pakistani militant group, the Taliban or al Qaeda," he said.

Khalilzad, has been outspoken in his criticism of Pakistan in recent days, despite its status as a key ally in the U.S.-led war on terrorism.

In an interview with Afghan television on Friday, he said there was a good chance Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar was hiding in Pakistan and accused Islamabad of failing to act against fugitive Taliban leaders, charges Pakistan called "irresponsible."

We have to put these 1,200 plus deaths, over 2 months, in perspective..

Compare them with the hysterical claims about "tens of thousands of babies dying every month" howled into the world's ears by Amnesty International, etc. during the "U.N. sanctions" of the 1991-2003 period.

While Saddam Hussein refused to comply with the international body's demands to allow free and open WMD inspections, the world press speculated that, during the 13 years of sanctions, there were "200,000 excess infant mortalities" to "500,000 Iraqi children under six killed" , while dictator-sympathetic NGO's wailed about "millions of Iraqis murdered" on acount of the U.N.'s restrictions on trade.

On a low guess (since that's all any of these figures are) of "100,000 excess deaths" (infants dying above the average rate) during 13 years (156 months) that would come to about 600 plus deaths a month.

Almost exactly the same number as the curent toll (of mainly armed adults -and some luckless children) of Iraqis who are now dying as a result of the ongoing jihadist/Baathist/foreign insurgency warfare.

So what's the big deal?

The U.N. was killing as many people without firing a shot ...or freeing a soul.

At least now the Iraqis have a fighting chance, with open elections, the right to emigrate, no fear of a murderously tyrannical judiciary or a capricious mafia-esque family in power.

So things have not gotten any worse as far as the death toll estimates go.

And are immeasurably better for the Iraqi people by virtue of their now-unchained future.

They just have to fight their way there.

The same as everybody else.

SO WHAT DO THE DEMOCRATS NEED TO SHOW THE MONSTERS WHAT TO KILL THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND ANY ONE WHO WANTS WOMEN TO BE FREE???

Taliban say free 23 after killing 8 in Afghan south
Mon Jun 20, 2005 10:53 AM ET
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (Reuters) - The Taliban said on Monday they had freed 23 people from a group of 31 they captured in a district of the southern Afghan province of Kandahar last week, having executed eight of the captives.
Taliban spokesman Abdul Latif Hakimi said the 23 -- a district chief and 22 police officers -- were freed as they had been found not guilty of supporting the U.S.-backed government.
Hakimi said at the weekend that the guerrillas had executed a district police chief and seven other policemen from the group, who were captured in raids on Mian Nishin district of Kandahar last week.

With gas prices rising and environmental concerns brewing, more Florida drivers are turning to electric-gas hybrids to meet their transportation needs.

But those green vehicles, while good for the air and their owners' wallets, pose a new danger to police, firefighters and others who respond to car crashes: electrocution.
