In spite of these successes the cancer of jihad was always present during the 20th century and proponents like Sayyid Qutb and the Ikhwan and its numerous branches, kept the disease alive.

Well the jinn of jihad conquest is out of the bottle again and it is more destructive now than it has been for many centuries. Perhaps our ancestors were too successful in controlling this disease. Perhaps they had crammed this thing so hard and so forcefully back into its bottle that the post-WWII generations have forgotten their own history with this disease and were lulled into a false sense of security and began to view the Islamic ideology as just another harmless code of benign personal conduct. As Gertie Stein would say, we were wrong, we were wrong, we were wrong.

As I read about the conduct of the jihad in our time I am often reminded of that scene in the film "Independence Day" when the captured alien invader is asked what they want from the humans, he tersely replies, "to die." That is the real-life message of the real-life would-be jihad conquerers to all who are not willing to accept their creed or to submit to their conquest.

If only our present experience and the horrors that are soon to be visited upon our children, were just a movie. My heart is utterly broken by the spectre of the globally-scaled suffering that we have invited upon our planet by not heeding the experience of our ancestors with this deadly scourge for over a millenium. How could an entire generation have become so blind?

If Islamic terrorists are such a problem in Europe, I cannot even imagine how much more of a problem they will be in America.

Since we blindly give illegal aliens free entry at our southern border, it is surprising that the US is requiring visas of anyone from Europe. We still have tourist bureaus handing them out in Saudi Arabia no questions asked, the last I heard.

It will probably take another 9/11 or two to shake up the morons in Washington before we bring our borders under effective control. Or maybe we could elect some people who are interested in defending the country - unfortunately they seem to be hard to find in either party these days.

I don't think the visas are being handed out freely anymore, at least to Saudi males. I have noted that household staff of Saudi Royals has been pared to exclude many males who formerly accompanied Saudis in their visits to their sandbox (that would be the USA,Paris is another). It was about the old "eye for an eye" which reminded me of game theory "tit fot tat". We must change our tactics if we want to win. The elite have almost lost the war for us by being so blinded by their own self importance that they have yet to realize we are at war. I don't want by young son to be a soldier until the elite let us fight the real war. Then I want him to join.

Quick things to do? Getting new effective border-defense oriented people in 2006 elections would be a good start. But finding and financing them is a major problem.

And that leaves a wide open door to terrorists between now and then, or really until they can get anything done in Washington.

Individual states could launch border control initiatives and usurp border control from the feds, since they are not doing their constitutionally mandated job of national defense. Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas could jointly solve the problem with a national guard-like institution not under federal control (a real 2nd Amendment militia of all things?); maybe get other western states to chip in on help paying some of the costs?

We are not getting any constructive thinking out of Washington, which may be too much to ask. Decentralizing like this might work. Maybe just the threat could shake the beltway crowd out of their golden towers.

The Minutemen really did some good in getting some national attention on the issue, much to the chagrin of the national media and the Beltway. They already have the seeds of an organization started – maybe rallying around them might be an approach.

If the feds would do their job, they could do it most quickly by putting a couple divisions on the border under a good tough general and solve the problem until the border patrol is brought up to an adequate strength to completely control the border. But I do not see that happening until the second 9/11.

Quite agree. The one point I wish to add, is that the Jihad has been invigorated here, mainly because we allowed muslims to immigrate to the West. Their children, born here, are now emboldened by that fact, ie they are supremely confident that they cannot be deported. The worse that could happen to them, is that are sent to jail, where of course they can continue their dawa. Saudi money has only played a minor part. It is the muslim presence here, their access to the power of the West, and the ability to raise money locally, is the main cause. In addition, they believe they have something of real value to get ie tge the power, wealth and influence of the West. It certainly is a prize worth fighting for, for it opens up the rest of the world to islam.

Just after 9/11, many muslims, particularly in the US, thought that their days in the US were numbered, and mass deportation was going to occcur. That was what they were expecting to happen. To avert this catastrophe for islam, they were running across to Canada to avoid deportation to dar al islam. The rest of the muslim world was trembling at a doomdsday scenario. But Bush's tepid response then and since, has given muslims much comfort, and to the extent, that they are emboldened enough to go on the offensive. They have judged America's magnanimous response to 9/11, as a sign of weakness. The correct response after 9/11, was to have deported muslims without regard to ethnicity or nationality, or atleast an exchange of populations, as occurred in India and Turkey/Greece. 9/11 provided more then adequate reason. Our magnanimous response has now become the catalyst for an invigorated jihad.

It is always a mistake to be charitable to islam.

22 states now maintain 2nd Amendment type standing militias that are mostly place-holders for National Guard units that are called up for federal service. These militias are referred to as State Defense Forces. They are increasingly being discussed in the public dialogue as another possible layer of defense in the looming war. They are truly a return to the roots of the earliest policies and strategy for defense of the United States. This is both good news and bad. The good news is that the 2nd Amendment is alive and well. The bad news is that our nation's situation is so dire that invocation of the militia provision of the 2nd Amendment is increasingly being discussed as a necessary expedient.

U.N.: Weapons Equipment Missing in Iraq

UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- U.N. satellite imagery experts have determined that material that could be used to make biological or chemical weapons and banned long-range missiles has been removed from 109 sites in Iraq, U.N. weapons inspectors said in a report obtained Thursday.
U.N. inspectors have been blocked from returning to Iraq since the U.S.-led war in 2003 so they have been using satellite photos to see what happened to the sites that were subject to U.N. monitoring because their equipment had both civilian and military uses.

In the report to the U.N. Security Council, acting chief weapons inspector Demetrius Perricos said he's reached no conclusions about who removed the items or where they went. He said it could have been moved elsewhere in Iraq, sold as scrap, melted down or purchased.

As for the Catholic v Protestant wars, at least Martin Luther had the balls to speak out against the UNBIBLICAL things the Catholic church was doing. The Catholics of the day had no Biblical basis for keeping the Bible in Latin and for indulgences. Luther tried his best at first to avoid war and splitting the church.

And as for Catholicism v's Protestantism, even after these wars, you still have Catholic Churches in Britain/France/Germany as well as Protestant.

But IA my point remains. Christian people of Europe - BOTH CATHOLIC AND PROTESTANT UNITED many a time to fend off Islam. They both still believed essentially the same things (eg Jesus Lord and Saviour, they both fought the Islamic invasion of Europe). In other words, the ancestors of Europe SOUNDLY REJECTED Islam, regardless of Christian denomination. Your argument doesn't wash. Its like saying Sunni v Shiite are traitors to Mo, because of differences.

As for the Pagan's - look closely - you will still find many Pagan traditions in European culture, even embedded in Christianity. Like:-

1) The white wedding dress - Pagan showing purity
2) The Christmas Tree, Dec 25Th - end of Winter Salters a pagan ceremony where the tree represented new life in the shortest day of the year.
3) Worship on a Sunday - rather than the Sabbath (as they early church worshiped), as Sunday was the Pagan day of worship of the Sun God. No set day was set aside for worship by early Christians, rather one was to worship God with all of ones heart soul and mind (aka daily in every aspect of life)
4) Passover being called Easter. Due to the ant- Semitic behaviour of Europeans towards anything Jewish, Passover is now Easter - taken from the Pagan ceremony of fertility (eg breed like bunny rabbits/ Easter eggs = fertility)
5) Wedding rings. Rings are a Pagan custom, not a Hebrew one.
6) The days of the week names, as are our planets' names etc. All taken from pagan names.
7) Priests in the Church. The early church only had elders as leaders. Priests are a pagan leftover.
8) Temples/churches of worship. Again the early church just met in houses for fellowship, not "church". The Normans (who were initially pagan) introduced regular "Church")
9) The Olympics – rooted in Greek Paganism of the worship of the Human Body.

My point IA? No Europe hasn't turned her back on many of her pagan customs and rituals. I, for example, am a resident of one nation but the citizen of another. I plan to apply for citizenship of the latter. Have I now abandoned all loyalty to the belief-systems that reared me? Nope. I also love the new country, but I cannot forget the old. Do I feel bad about it? A little, yes. And I recognize it. I may avoid participating in elections here for a while as an ethical decision.

Qualified patriotism is, by definition, not absolute loyalty.

Here in Australia though (this will be easy to find) only a couple of weeks ago, a school girl was allowed to NOT wear the school uniform, as it wasn't "kosher" to her Muslim beliefs.

When you move between countries and cultures, it's normal to have divided loyalties in the first generation. That is why orderly immigration and assimilation are so important.

However, I doubt you are going into your new society with the intent to make it over into a carbon copy of what you've left, by force if necessary. This is what I would call a major "value difference" between western and muslim societies.

In the whole history of Europe, there are exactly two instances in which "European peoples have fought Christian armies", i.e. Christianity has been imposed with force, Muslim fashion: namely, Charlemagne's conquest of Saxony (778-800AD) and the Teutonic Knights' conquest of Prussia, Latvia and Estonia in the late Middle Ages. About a decade ago, Hanif Kureishi came out with a movie, "My Son the Fanatic," about a Muslim son of a Pakistani father. The father arrived in England simply as an economic immigrant (he is played sympathetically by a celebrated Indian -- Hindu -- actor); he drinks a bit, gives lifts to prostitutes, and his live-and-let-live attitude is emphasized (indeed, it is much exaggerated). But the son, who is British-born and bred, carries the dormant virus of Islam within him. Experiencing what he regards as boredom and failure, he turns to Islam, and becomes ever more delirious in his beliefs. When last seen he is going off with his equally faith-bound, faith-manacled, faith-prompted friends.

It was a comedy on the silver screen. In life, it is not so much a tragedy, as a catastrophe -- for the Infidel societies whose rulers did not perform due diligence, did not find out precisely what Islam (i.e., Qur'an, Hadith, and Sira, and their embodiment in the Sharia, or Holy Law of Islam) teaches, and whether or not those teachings in fact have been expressed in the long and wide history of Muslim conquest and subjugation of non-Muslims, from Spain to the East Indies (answer: yes, those subjugated non-Muslims, whether Christians or Jews or Zoroastrians or Hindus or Buddhists, were subject to remarkably similar treatments, though perhaps the mass murder of Hindus was the worst of all, and was stopped only when it became clear that a continued population of dhimmis was necessary to supply the Muslim state with revenues).

The European countries are discovering that Muslim immigrants did not declare to the customs inspectors the truly disturbing mental baggage that accompanied them: their faith in Islam, their identification with Islam even if that faith were observed casually, the amazing defensiveness about Islam, the willingness to lie about its contents and to preserve, virtually intact, the habits of mind, including the habit of submission to authority, and inshallah-fatalism, and deep hostility, and sometimes murderous hatred, for all Infidels, a hostility that is encouraged by specific passages met with repeatedly in Qur'an and Hadith, and demonstrated by the acts of Muhammad, who took part in 78 military campaigns against Infidels (including, of course, pagan Arabs).

This growing realization of the dormant virus of Islam that can come alive, prompted both by events we can identify and events we cannot identify, is taking place at the very time when those same European governments are prating insanely about "integration" of their Muslim populations. That those Muslim immigrants present a particular difficulty, one that Chinese and Hindus and Vietnamese Buddhists do not present (and why not? because they are not Muslims), is recognized, but not discussed, not analyzed. Instead, we are told, if only European governments pay for mosques, that will end "Wahhabi" influence and, presumably, put paid to the problem. But the problem is not "Wahhabi" Islam but Islam itself. One has only to read and study the texts, read the most celebrated Qur'anic commentators, and supplement that reading of the texts with some study of the history of Muslim conquest and of inculcated Muslim attitudes toward non-Muslims, which is a fearful and hideous thing, and one will realize that the "problem" (always discreetly never identified) cannot be solved by Infidel governments actually paying for the transmission of Muslim beliefs, but can only be mitigated, not ended, by doing everything to undercut those beliefs, and limit, and work to diminish, the Muslim presence in Infidel lands -- at least, if one cares about the undeniable fact that Infidels, in their own countries, now must lead lives much more unpleasant, expensive, and dangerous than they would otherwise be, if the large-scale presence of Muslims had never been permitted in the first place. There is no obligation for Western societies and peoples to commit suicide, or to make life-and-death decisions aobut their own civilization based on airy nothings, including the easy invocation of the word, essentially meaningless, "moderate."

The more intelligent people in the Western world are beginning to conduct -- coute que coute -- their own study of Islam. They do not like what they see. They like even less the continuyed idiocy of Western spokesmen, Western politicians, Western journalists, who with each denying or lying word show how incapable they are of rising to the occasion. We have a right to demand better. Tom Friedman is not the last word on the Middle East, nor on Islam, but rather an idiot who has acquired power, somehow, through some group of editors' collective misjudgment. Tony Blair's insisting that Islam is a great religion -- if he meant it -- disqualifies him from being taken seriously. Dominique de Villepin's dreamy belief that he "knows" all about Islam because he was born in Sale, then next to Rabat, in Morocco, and spent his infancy in that country, and that he has visited the Institut du monde arabe, simply will not do (and that is why Sarkozy, who calmly dissected Tariq Ramadan's taqiyya on French television, has support and D. de V., the poseur who is Chirac's chosen dauphin, will not last, though some female correspondents outside France take him seriously, not realizing how greatly he is despised, not least for his excruciating poetry, his grandiloquent and portentous excursions into history-writing (D. de V. himself deserving to be memorialized, like his crooked master, in historiettes composed by some contemporary Tallemant de Reaux).

"Integration" of Muslims is simply the latest attempt to avoid confronting the horrible truth: Muslims do not, by and large, wish to be integrated and cannot be integrated. They are opposed to Infidels, to Infidel societies, to Infidel understandings. Only those who abandon Islam (and there some, but not nearly enough, among those immigrants) can conceivably fit into Westen societies. It will not do to endlessly invoke such words as "tolerance" and "peace" as part of Islam -- they are not, not in the slightest. Islam is not a religion "like any other." It is, rather, a clear geopollitical doctrine, and its impulses are acted upon, have been acted upon, whenever in history the occasion has presented itself, and the wherewithal for conducting Jihad in order to spread the borders of dar al-Islam has been available. Military and technologically weak, the world of Islam has become a menace yet again because of three things:

1) the accident of geology that has given the OPEC oil states some $10 trillion dollars since 1973. 10 of the 11 OPEC states are Arab or Muslim. The money has been used to buy armaments, to pay for mosques and madrasas all over the world, including the non-Muslim world, and to buy the support, or sympathies, or services, of large numbers of Infidel collaborators, hirelings all. Among their number are quite a few ex-diplomats, former agents of Western intelligence services, businessmen without scruples or even a sense of what their own civilization requires, and how it is menaced, academics, some of them directly bought and paid for by the Arab penchant for setting up "Centres" and "Centers" for this and that, and also paying for chairs on which ample bottoms may be self-satisfiedly placed.

Teaching Muslims local langugages, teaching them even "how to pick up local girls" (i.e., Infidel women), will only make Muslims better able to exploit, in the Tariq Ramadan manner, the points of entry into Infidel hearts and minds. Sorry, but if I don't accept the 7th century Arabian Muhammad as a prophet, I also don't accept the 19th century New Englan woman Ellen G. White as a prophetess, either.

I have serious problems with Hugh's view of the problem. In his eyes, as far as I can see, there was a silly European "decision" to admit Muslim immigrants to Europe, which ought to be rescinded; the unwanted Muslims could then be simply shipped back to a Muslim reservation, however defined, and kept out of the European mainland by force of arms.

Anyone familiar with the geography of Europe knows that this is a non-starter. The Mediterranean is an open gate to any Muslim or any other immigrant, so long as they can get hold of any kind of shell that will float; and every harbour, however small, has an apparently infinite supply of what Italians call "carrette di mare" - seagoing rubbish. Neither Italy nor Spain ever made a decision to let in so much as one immigrant; nevertheless, they both find themselves with major problems with illegal immigration. As for France, the "decision" to let in Muslims was due not to any kind of dim-witted benevolence, as Hugh likes to characterize it, but to the aftermath of a lost war: they had to let in the Algerians who had fought on the French side in the Algerian war, whose lives would count for less than nothing in any Muslim country. And of course, as the Mediterranean coast is open to any kind of immigrant, so is the rest of Europe, with its excellent communications system. Anyone can get on a train or a bus or even walk anywhere they please.

The notion of a Muslim reservation is equally fantastic. How would you prevent Muslims from leaving its borders? Would you prevent them from having cars, ships, trains, planes? Would you run a big electrified fence all along the border? Would you forbid them from trading with the rest of the world, from visiting, or, in many cases, from escaping odious regimes? And how would you distinguish between Muslims and non-Muslims within the reservation? Would you let the local minorities there to the tender mercies of the Muslim majority?

Finally and most importantly, we are not, and we do not wish to become, police states. We do not want every person in every town to be scheduled and known to the local police; and it would take nothing less than this to locate and throw out all the Muslims who manage to enter our countries one way or another. That is not to say that I am not in favour of sending illegals back; that is something that needs to be done. What I am saying is that to dream of a world where we do not have the nuisance and danger of a Muslim presence on our doorstep, where we can restrict the Muslims to their own lands and never let them out, is no better than an escapist fantasy; especially for Europe, which is open to Muslim immigration by the simplest means, not excluding shanks mare.

And that being the case, we have to deal with things as they are; including doing our best to make them integrate, and keep a close and unfriendly watch over those who efuse to. Sure, it is difficult, dangerous, complex, expensive, and nobody offers any guarantee that it will work. But, sirs and madams, that's life; and the proposed alternative is no alternative at all, but dreams.

First, Hugh never proposed Musilm "reservations". You are trying to invoke the American West of the Ninteenth Century. You should know the Spaniards (particularly), French, and English killed or enslaved the vast majority of Indians before there was a United States. What day would Jesus himself had kept as the Sabbath? Being a Jew? Would it have been the Sunday? No, the Bible clearly states he went to Synagogue (Luke 4:16; Mark 1:21; 3:1; Luke 13:10). So the Sabbath for Jesus was the traditional Sabbath for Jews - from Friday evening when the sun goes down to the Saturday when the sun goes down.

As the first Christians were also Jews, what day do you think they kept? (see Acts 9:20; 13:14; 14:1; 17:1, 2, 10; 18:4)

Sunday as Sabbath is a Roman Catholic invention that the Protestants also kept (both groups at various times were very anti Semitic - hence we have Sunday to this day).

As for the day that we set aside for the Lord? Does it really matter? My personal view is that we should 'Remember the Sabbath to keep it Holy' - just as Christ did. I know many Christians who light a candle and have a home fellowship on the Friday night (beginning of Sabbath), and then also go to Church on Sunday.

From a Muslim perspective I remember reading a Canadian Islamic web site where they used things like the Sabbath, and Easter, they would then move onto the idea of the "Trinity" to show the Christians are "polytheistic" and that Christians are no better than pagans, and hence that Islam "is" the "right" way. It would also feed the Islamic notion that Christians corrupted God word. The web site used this as a "doorway" to sucker people in (I would assume one of the target groups were Christian). This in itself started to make me examine Christianity.

As for BigSleep, insults are not a replacement for inability to think and ignorance of the situation. I certainly do not advocate surrender to Islam; however, history shows that those who are quickest to demand violent measures, war, expulsion, etc., are not those who last out the conflict. People who howl for mass expulsions and massacres are, in the bottom of their souls, terrified of being asked to go on fighting, resisting, showing their mettle and their endurance - again and again and again. But if immediate action had been taken against Nazi Germany by France and Britian during the "Phony War", Germany would have been defeated (Gernmany had spent her supplies invading Poland), and all the horrors that follwed in the following six years could have been avioded. In fact Hitler was and many of his generals were paraniod that France would attack (who had the largest and best equiped army in Europe), with Britian, and the fact is, that during this time Germany had niether the manpower on the Western Front, nor the material to hold them off. While we are describing European countries Paolo lets not forget Spain - another Fascist dictatorship that provided the training ground for "blooding" many of Hitler's Nazi soldiers. Then when war did break out, the cowardly Spainish of the time, sat on the side lines and allowed evil to florish.

As for the USA, after bailing the Euro's out of WW1, its no wonder that they were isolationist come WW2.

Oh and lets not forget that it was the Yanks who had to bail the Euro's out of WW2 also! Oh and the entire Pacific Rim.

Brent Skocroft and James Baker are both of the pragmatist ilk, which suggests the Paolo policy of establishing diplomatic agreements with rogue nations. Those agreements are then supposed to be able to keep us in a perpetual state of safe tension as we hedge our bets back and forth between legitimite allies like Israel and phony allies like Saudi Arabia. When terrorists have something the U.S. wants, great, we throw them a bone. When an ally has something we need, great, throw them a bone. Balance it indefinetly and all is well.

This plan is deeply flawed. Putting off inevitable conflicts with criminal nations only serves to strengthen them for the battle that inevitably must be fought down the road. We paid a very steep price hedging our bets with the Soviets after WW2 by giving them Eastern Europe.

The Cold War that followed, along with the destructive and violent communism which spread on the heals of this cowardly deed, was such an egregious historical mistake that President GW Bush recently apologized for the handing Eastern Europe over to the totalitarian Soviets. For nearly 50 years, these people suffered brutal and unnecessary horrors under the Soviets, but it didn't have to be that way.

So, as we now know, such pragmatism nearly destroyed the world back then by enabling the spread of Iron Curtain communism, and today we see the same thing happening with the spread of Islam.

Well said - except that he put words in my mouth. The notion that I support making deals with villains like Saudi Arabia is an insult. I could show you correspondence I wrote six or seven years ago - long before 7-11 - where I said that our so-called alliance with Saudi Arabia - which I described as a conspiracy of drunkards, religious fanatics and drunken religious fanatics - was unnatural and would eventually come back to haunt us. I may have a short temper, but is there anyone among you who even bothers to read what I write and react to what I think, instead of just ascribing to me any dumb ideas that they want to have a swipe at? All I am saying is this:
1)- there is no way that we can make the Muslim world vanish, nor, in our modern world of cheap and fast communication, keep them out of our countries;
2)- the struggle with Islam is going to be long and bloody, and it is likely that none of us will live to see its end.

I am a firm believer in the superiority of our culture, of individual liberty and collective responsibility, of citizenship and freedom; I am certain that our culture will win. But we will go through long and painful days before it does.

Correct. We can, however, actively change the primitive and barbaric way Islam is observed through the use of overwhelming military force and suffocating prosecution of Moslem criminal behavior.

Agreed. However, I would add that before we can overcome Jihadi Islam we must identify it specifically as the enemy and then pound them into a bloody pulp; and I do mean POUND. No PC target bombing. Yes, it will take time to defeat them entirely due to their huge population, but, like we defeated Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany before them with total victory and the Marshall Plan, so must we repeat this model with the Moslems.
