Abbas Kadhim grew up in Najaf, the Shiite holy city in Iraq where violent clashes broke out a year ago between U.S. military forces and followers of radical Muslim cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. He fled to this country in 1992 after participating in the popular uprising against Saddam Hussein. Now a U.S. citizen, he writes a blog on religion and politics in the Middle East titled "Calling It Like It Is." I spoke with Kadhim, who teaches Islamic ethics and Koranic studies at Berkeley's Graduate Theological Union, about the role of Islam in shaping the country's direction.Q: You teach students in the United States about Islamic ethics and the Quran. How well do you think Americans understand Islam today?
I would say that the average American is more informed about Islam now than prior to 9/11. Before 9/11, most Americans were either completely ignorant or misinformed. But there's been a lot of learning since then.
Still, what would you say are the biggest misconceptions?
Many Americans still think of Islam and terrorism as one and the same thing. This is a big problem. I mean, there are 1.7 billion Muslims in the world. If all of them are terrorists, the world is doomed, right? There are a certain number of Muslims who are taking their violent agenda and giving it a mask that is Islamic, but this is not what Islam is. I defy anyone to bring me one verse in the Quran that advocates violence. The Quran talks about fighting and other things, but always in self-defense, and even the verses that mention fighting say that peace is the way to go...
What do you think is going to happen in Iraq? Do you think the country will eventually stabilize itself?
Yes. Iraqis have done very well in handling themselves with adversity. They have gotten their country back much faster than was planned. The original plans were to have a military ruler of Iraq for five years. Iraqis got a government within a year and a half. People are already being sent to jail for corruption and theft. Terrorists are being captured. So Iraqis, if they are left to their own devices, they will do very well. And if there is any trouble, I think it will be because of the interference of people who are trying to pass a different agenda.
What role do you think Islam should play in building the new Iraq?
More than 95 percent of Iraqis are Muslim. These aren't just Muslims; they are practicing Muslims. In a population with that kind of majority, the religion has to be factored in future plans. It's important to remember that whatever small success has occurred in Iraq so far has been the result of people using Islam as a positive force. The elections were not an American idea; they were the idea of [leading cleric] Ayatollah Ali al-Husseini al-Sistani, who insisted on them. He also has been using his leverage to denounce violence. After the collapse of the regime, there was a wave of looting, and it was the mosques that called for people to return what was looted, and the majority of the things were brought back to the mosque. The mosque has been the only institution in Iraq really functioning in a positive way.
What about the fear that Iraq will become a theocracy, like Iran? Are you concerned about that?
This is not going to happen. Iran is a monolithic society with more than 80 percent who are Shiite Muslims. In Iraq, you have 65 percent of Iraqis who are Shiite. Even if you ignore the secular elements who don't want a theocracy, you've got head Shiite scholars saying they don't want it, either. The thing is, right now, if you push Islam outside, the entire enterprise will fail, guaranteed. Then you will give the terrorists a good reason to use [violence in] the name of Islam. Every time you exclude a group, you are giving them no choice but to engage in violence...
Yeah, yeah. Nothing is wrong with Islam and so anything that ever goes wrong, like terrorist violence for example, is never the fault of Islamic teaching. NEVER.

Of course the words "advocating violence" are not literally, exactly, specifically in the Koran. They are English words, first of all, so they can't be in the Koran.
And, if you look for translations that use these two words "advocating violence", in the original Arabic, you will not find them.
You will find Sura 9:5 however. Among many other verses which call for terrorizing and killing the unbelievers.
But, technically, you could do that genocide in a non-violent way.
Gassing people without them being aware that it was about to happen (maybe you could tell them they were being 'deloused', or 'given a shower'...?) is not "violent". They pass out and die. Quite peaceful , actually.

No Infidel aid, no transfer of technology, no access to our medical care or education. He is right of course. It is not possible to bring him just one verse from the Koran that advocates violence because there are so many. Here is a list of at least 164 jihad verses in the Koran. And these don't include verses that admonish husbands to inflict violence on their wives and slaves.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Somali immigrant accused of conspiring to help terrorists blow up a shopping mall is asking that his statements to investigators — including what he knew about a member of Al Qaeda (search) — be barred from his trial.
Attorney Mahir T. Sherif said Nuradin Abdi (search) was arrested without grounds and pressured to answer investigators' questions. On June 1, he asked a federal judge to bar the statements, which are sealed.

WASHINGTON — Federal authorities have charged a Somali national with plotting to blow up a Columbus, Ohio, shopping mall and for supporting Al Qaeda.
Nuradin M. Abdi (search) has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly providing material support to Al Qaeda and other charges, according to court documents and Justice Department officials. He is accused of plotting to blow up the mall with Iyman Faris (search).
"The American heartland was targeted for death and destruction by an Al Qaeda cell, which allegedly included a Somali immigrant who will now face justice," Attorney General John Ashcroft said in announcing the unsealing of the grand jury's four-count indictment during a press conference Monday.
The charges against Abdi, who has been in custody since November on immigration-related violations, were handed up by the grand jury last Thursday.
According to court documents, while living in the United States, Abdi went on April 27, 1999, to get travel documents and falsely said that he intended to visit Germany and Saudi Arabia for the purpose of "Umrah" and to visit a relative. Actually, according to the government, he was going to Ethiopia to get military-style training in preparation for violent jihad.

2) Rabidly insane Jihadists who either through calculated training in terrorist cells or casually through peers or merely on their own initiative blow themselves up (or try to blow themselves up, or otherwise try to murder innocents, like the guy who stabbed the kissing couple in Egypt, etc.) -- 5%
3) Muslims who actively -- through non-militant means such as hiding fugitives, not telling authorities information, acting as couriers, setting up visa paperwork, funnelling money, etc. -- support the #1 and #2 types -- 7%
4) Muslims who, with no reservation, mentally and emotionally support the cause of #1, #2 & #3 and though they are otherwise not materially or militantly involved with them, often do contribute to the "war of ideas", either substantially, like professors and pundits (the Espositos and Tariq Ramadans of the world), or less substantially, like the Muslim-in-the-street who registers his taqiyya-laced comments for TV interviewers, poll-takers, letters to the editor, complaints to politicians, blogs, refusal to condemn Muslim terrorists and the Islamic & Koranic underpinnings of terrorism, etc. -- 50%

Mutilation of victims and Muslim law

"A RECENT FATWA posted on a popular Islamic website in Saudi Arabia," reports Neil McFarquhar in The New York Times, "explains when a Muslim may mutilate the corpse of an infidel."
The ruling by Sheik Omar Abdullah Hassan al-Shehabi specifies two circumstances in which the desecration of an infidel -- a non-Muslim -- is permitted. One is retaliation "when the enemy is disfiguring Muslim corpses or when it otherwise serves the Islamic nation." The other is when mutilation will "terrorize the enemy" or "gladden the heart of a Muslim warrior."
Given those conditions, it is hard to imagine a situation in which an Islamist militant couldn't justify the mutilation of a victim's body.
"That a cleric can post such an argument in an open forum," commented McFarquhar, "goes a long way toward explaining how the most radical interpretations of religious texts flourish in Saudi Arabia."
But they don't flourish only in Saudi Arabia.
The popular "Ask the Scholar" feature of Islam Online (www.islamonline.net) was recently asked "how Islam views the issue of mutilating dead bodies of enemies." In a reply, Sheik Faysal Mawlawi, deputy chairman of the European Council for Fatwa and Research, began by declaring that mutilation is "not allowable" under Islam. But then came the loophole:
"It is possible to mutilate the dead only in case of retaliation. . . . If he inflicts any physical damage on anyone, he should be retaliated against in the same manner. In case of war, Muslims are allowed to take vengeance for their mutilated dead mujahids (fighters) in the same way it was done to them." This, the European sheik explained, is the teaching of the Koran (16:126), which counsels patience but authorizes revenge.
Does this mean that normative Islamic law authorizes Muslims to mangle the bodies of non-Muslims they have killed? I am not a scholar of Islam and would not presume to say. But two facts seem indisputable: (1) A Muslim intent on such mutilation can find clerical authority to justify it. And (2) a small but implacable minority of Muslims are intent on such mutilation. Indeed, it has become a signature of the evil we are fighting, as the news of the last few months has shown.

Fallujah: Four Americans are ambushed, dragged from their vehicles, jumped on, and pounded with bricks. As jubilant Iraqis chant Islamic slogans, the bodies are dismembered and set on fire. Two of the charred remains are then hung from a bridge; the other two are dragged behind cars along the city's main street.
Khobar, Saudi Arabia: A British oil executive, Michael Hamilton, is one of 22 people murdered in an Al Qaeda attack. His corpse is dragged through the city, then dumped near a bridge.
Gaza: After six Israelis are blown up in a bomb attack, Palestinians are filmed dancing in the streets and playing with the dead men's body parts. In a video, two Islamic Jihad terrorists take credit for the massacre -- and display the severed head of one of their victims.
Iraq: Islamofascists videotape their murder of Nicholas Berg, a 26-year-old US civilian. Shouting "Allahu akhbar!" ("God is great!"), they saw off Berg's head as he shrieks in pain and fear.
The disfiguring of victims' bodies did not begin this year. In a notorious lynching four years ago, two Israeli reservists were taken from their car to the second floor of a Palestinian police station in the West Bank town of Ramallah, where they were literally torn limb from limb. Their internal organs were pulled from their bodies, their eyes were gouged out, and what was left of them was thrown from a window to a cheering crowd below, which set the corpses on fire and dragged them through the town.
Perhaps even more infamous -- at least to Americans -- were the beheading of journalist Daniel Pearl in Pakistan in 2002 and the mutilation of the bodies of US soldiers in Somalia in 1993.
We are in a war to the death with an enemy whose deepest civilizational values come straight out of the 8th century. In the world that they would impose on us all, there is no dissent, no pluralism, no path to God but theirs -- and no mercy or tolerance for those who might choose a different path.
Our enemies make no secret of their intentions: We will bow to their totalitarian idea of Islam, or we will be killed. And not only killed, but mangled, mutilated, and subjected to the most hideous indignities they can devise.
The terrorists and their followers burn and batter corpses for the same reason the Taliban smashed magnificent statues -- for the same reason Hitler wrote "Mein Kampf": to openly proclaim their contempt for the moral principles of the civilized world.
Ultimately it is up to the world's moderate, modern Muslims to rise up against the barbarians in their midst. Until that day comes, there is nothing the West can do to ameliorate or appease this enemy. We can only destroy it -- or be destroyed.

I have mixed feelings. I'm sure based on the reaction to this guys comments that he must have a lot of other baggage that renders his wishful thinking pointless. Apparently it is just lying propaganda aimed at his intended victims.
But there is this: if Islam is to ever get a handle on its psychosis, as Judaism and Christianity have slowly done with their own intepretations of the violence embedded in their written traditions, at some point, Muslims will have to figure out what to do with these verses. I don't think they are going to erase them, anymore than we Jews have erased anything in the Torah. We had to add Oral Tradition, to struggle with meaning in context. In the end, even if this guy is a lying sack of sticks, the answer will lie in redefining how these verses are taught.
The litmus test for deciding who is finally doing it right will be that he is teaching it to Muslims, not propagandizing us.

Then CAIR's stand is hypocritical.
As they use that lame excuse [although true in some cases - when looking at Islamic governments] they fight to establish the very same type of governemnts in non-Muslim nations.

I am here to learn when something I don't know is presented, especially about their...gulp..theology.
