A Saudi Arabian couple was in custody Friday, accused of turning a young Indonesian woman into a virtual slave, forcing her to clean, cook and care for their children while she was threatened and sexually assaulted.
Sexually assaulted? "And all married women (are forbidden unto you) save those (captives) whom your right hands possess." That is, slave girls. That's Qur'an 4:24.
A federal grand jury on Thursday indicted Homaidan Al-Turki, 36, and his wife, Sarah Khonaizan, 35, on charges of forced labor, document servitude and harboring an illegal immigrant.Al-Turki also faces state charges including kidnapping, false imprisonment and extortion, as well as 12 charges of sexual assault. His wife faces some of the same charges. The two could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted.
Phone messages left Friday for their individual lawyers were not immediately returned.
U.S. Attorney's Office spokesman Jeff Dorschner said the Indonesian woman, who is in her 20s, came to the United States with the couple legally to perform domestic chores. But her U.S. visa was hidden from her by Al-Turki and Khonaizan, according to Thursday's indictment.
The woman was controlled by "a climate of fear and intimidation" that included sexual abuse and the belief that she would "suffer serious harm" if she did not perform her tasks, the indictment said.

Officially Saudi Arabia, under Western pressure, abolished slavery in 1962. One old Princess of the Al-Saud refused to free her slaves. In any case, it really did not make much difference. Slavery has been not only part of, but central to Muslim societies from the very beginning. It has to be. For Muhammad and the Companions owned slaves, and slavery is mentioned (and hence, made licit for all time) in the Qur'an, Hadith, and Sira. So that's it -- we can all go home, and forget about anti-slavery attitudes in Islam.
And even today, there are blacks enslaved by Arabs in the Sudan, in Mali, and in Mauritania. The Saudis treat many of their domestic servants, particularly the Asian women who suffer the kind of treatment you can easily imagine, with their governments unwilling to stand up for them (their economies need the money remitted by these workers, and they do not wish to anger the Saudis and other rich Arab employers).
Within Saudi Arabia, there have been advertisements even within the past year offering to swap a late-model American used car for an "Indian" or other girl -- if that does not indicate a slave-system, then what would?
Of course those female house slaves have no one who dares come to their aid. Until yesterday, the American government never raised an eyebrow at the trafficking in humans that has been a staple of Arab and Muslim societies and that in Saudi Arabia is an accepted fact of life.
And so it is hardly surprising when rich Saudis come to London, or to the United States, that these cruel leopards do not change their spots, but continue to treat the servants they bring with them as -- slaves.
One more case, of which there have been hundreds reported, and no doubt for every one reported, there are 10 or 20 or 50 that have not been reported, or been hushed up by the clever distribution of Saudi largesse.
Rich muslim women are notorious for their cruelty to domestic help (slaves); they're probably more vicious than their macho husbands. They take out their repressed resentment on these "inferiors" who are at the very bottom of the muslim social stratum.
It is pathetic but somewhat understandable. These women, slaves themselves, cannot resist the opportunity to exert power and control over someone more vulnerable and impotent than themselves. When their husbands exercise their right to rape slaves, they are even more despised by the wives. Obviously they make no distinction between paid domestic help and slaves, since they consider themselves superior to all non-Arab muslims and of course, all non-muslims.
The fact is that the name of the wife concerned sounds - people who know Arabic may help here - like she might be Christian, perhaps Armenian, in origin. I never came across "Sarah" as a Muslim name, and "Khonaizan" does not sound very Arabic to me.
Susanp, do not make excuses. Whether or not Saudi women are abused, what these creatures do is to identify with the system and make use of it for their domestic convenience and perverted pleasure. If we started to excuse them on the grounds that they have been victimized themselves, we would have to excuse pretty nearly every Muslim, since Muslim men, in their own way, also are stunted, repressed, and fear-ridden.
All they were doing was giving the girl a proper Muslim education.
As they will give everyone if they gain power.
Reason enough to 'encourage' them to return to Mecca (Mekkah, if they prefer) and rotate around the Ka'aba till the rats, which once were Jews ...until Mohammad bewitched them, turn back into Hebrews.
That should give the rest of the world time enough to get on with the proper duties of a progressive species. Colonizing Mars, developing interstellar flight, defeating the telomere death fuse in the DNA, and eradicating rank stupidity like this from the Earth.
In SaudiArabia this seems to be common procedure.
This happened in the US, and not for the first time.There was also the case of a Saudi-'princess' that clubbered a maid badly and kicked her down the stairs.
Goes to show just how primitive and barbaric these newly -rich Beduins are and that any call for us to 'respect' them, their customs or their 'religion' should be answered with a good kick in the fat asses of these desert monkeys.
Ah: I forgot: Money talks. They are loaded! We are sucking up to them because they are recycling some of the undeserved wealth (which we allow them by paying for the oil) therefore they have become 'untouchable'?

My impression was not that Susanp was making excuses, but rather, that she was offering an explanation.
I wasn't making excuses for the muslim witches by any means; there is no excuse for abusing a vulnerable, defenseless girl regardless of their own miserable plights.
While wealthy muslim women may enjoy creature comforts, they too, are slaves and prisoners. I was merely pointing out that they relish the opportunity to treat helpless servants as badly or worse than they are treated. It provides the only sense of empowerment they will ever feel.
Saudi Arabia is pretty much hated throughout the Muslim world too. I remember having a conversation with a Syrian who was employed there who despised them. The literacy rate is very low, while countries like Syria and Iraq at least have an educated middle class.
