A smuggling ring specializing in bringing Iranians into the U.S. over the Mexico border has been broken up in an FBI sting operation.A 39-year-old Iranian with permanent legal residency status who is suspected of having smuggled 60 other Iranians into the U.S. was arrested Thursday in Mesa, Ariz., according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
At his arraignment yesterday, Zeayadali Malhamdary, who owns a tailoring business, pleaded not guilty. He faces a detention hearing tomorrow....
The FBI began investigating Malhamdary after a source told immigration officials that Malhamdary had sought help getting false Mexican visas so he could bring Iranians into Mexico and then across the border into Arizona.
The source also told investigators that Malhamdary had asked for help bringing his sister into the United States. According to the probable cause statement by FBI Agent Aaron Kellerman, the source didn't help him, but the sister did arrive in Arizona.
Federal prosecutors say Malhamdary had previously smuggled about 60 Iranians into the United States.
Malhamdary flew to Tehran, Iran, in March, allegedly to get the passports of the Iranians he planned to smuggle into the United States through Mexico, Kellerman said in the statement....
When he was arrested, Malhamdary allegedly told investigators that he wanted to bring Iranians into the United States so they could seek refugee status. No one answered the phone at his tailoring business yesterday afternoon....
FBI officials said they had no reason to believe there were any terrorist connections to the case.

The situation on the US borders is pathetic. The Gov is schizophrenic about it. On one hand they keep warning us about terrorist attacks and even arresting local terrorists and supporters. On the other hand they deny that any terrorists ever come across the border. Any reasonable person can figure out for themselves, that there must be "some" terrorists sneaking in, "zero" is impossible.
Malhamdary, a tailor, went into the smuggling business for what? A part time job to suppliment income? A hobby? Just wants to help out fellow Iranians? See's himself as some kind of Iranian savior? I suggest holding out an opinion on this one until we find out if the people he was trying to smuggle are members of one of the brutally persecuted religious minority communities in Iran such as the Bahai or Christian converts.
I believe that if there is another attack on U.S. soil by these people, it will be through suicide car bombings and this is how they get here. Unfortunately, it might take a something terrible to happen before there is a reaction.

If the tailor, was smuggling in oppressed, at risk, Iranian religious minorities, then I am right that he see's himself as a savior. That's what he is doing...saving people. If it can be determined that "none" of the Iranians he "saved" were contaminated by jihad, then he is off the hook for that one, but he is still a criminal by law. The big problem with being a "savior" is that most of them are sacraficed in one way or the other. This isn't rocket science. Open borders and a cadre of unaccounted for "entrants" are an invitation for disaster and the epitome of stupidity. For years people and contraband have flowed in with little thought of the consequences. The American West, with its open spaces, caves, ravines and other land forms is a perfect spot to hide items and large numbers of people.
Although some Mexicans are coming to work, the Mexican government, police, and military aren't friendly and regularly violate American law and sovereignty. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to wonder if they are also aiding and abetting something a more sinister international plot...
I agree with the above posts that whatever the reason for the attempted smuggling, it is a crime and he should be held accountable for breaking the law. My reservation is related to whether he was engaged in any acts of war, i.e., smuggling in folks who are intent on waging jihad.
This is a debate that we don't yet see enough in the public dialogue on our present circumstances. Are we in a state of war, or are we not? Criminal codes can be used for dealing with the latter, let the international law of war prevail in the former. The distinction is important and the appropriate response of the society to each is very different. With criminal acts we have the whole gamut of law enforcement actions including due process (Constitutional rights, etc.). With acts of war, we have Geneva Conventions, etc., where concepts such as unreasonable search and seizure, habeas corpus, right to counsel, etc. have no relevance. Instead we have concepts such as whether one is a lawful combatant entitled to treatment as a POW, etc.
It should be recalled that when Muslims launched their invasion of Spain they did so, not by launching an all out attack on Gibraltar from the sea, they crossed from Morocco in small groups at night and hid in the caves in the Rock above the city until they had amassed a large enough force then with the advantages of numbers and surprise they charged down the mountain and took the city. The port was then used as a base camp for the assult on main land Spain.
Beware, the numbers of Jihadis in the US now who has crossed unseen in the night from Mexico and Canada could be huge. And considering the amount of wilderness (including deserts where Arabs feel most at home) you could already be harbouring a vertible army.

Chechen Who Trained Female Suicide Bombers Killed

Federal troops have killed Abu-Bakr Bizimbayev, the Chechen separatist allegedly responsible for training the female suicide bombers who took part in the Dubrovka theater siege, RIA Novosti has reported.
Bisimbayev was a personal bodyguard for top field commander Shamil Basayev, the agency quoted Ilya Shabalkin, a representative from the anti-terrorist headquarters in the North Caucasus, as saying.
Basayev was linked to the hostage takeover of the Nosd-Ost musical theater which resulted in the death of 130 people. His bodyguard chose female suicide bombers for terror attacks in Russia and Chechnya, he said.
Bisimbayev was personally responsible for training the Ganiyev sisters, who took part in the theater seige in October of 2002

Moscow Theater Siege Suspect Detained in Belarus

A Russian citizen suspected of being involved in a theater siege in Moscow in 2002 has been detained in Belarus.
Numarntamet Khatoyev, a native of Chechnya, is also suspected of taking part in the siege of a hospital in the South Russian city of Budyonnovsk in 1995, Russian Information Agency Novosti reported citing Belarus state television and law enforcement structures.
Khatoyev was detained at an airport near the Belarus capital of Minsk. He arrived from Istanbul with a forged passport. Belarus law enforcement structures discovered his name after sending inquiries and his fingerprints to their Russian colleagues. Khatoyev then confirmed his real identity.
Belarus and Russian services are currently negotiating Khotoyev’s extradition. The detainee has asked not to be extradited.
The Budyonnovsk attack was committed by Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev. 148 policemen and citizens were killed. After rebel gunmen occupied the hospital and took hundreds of hostages, the then Russian PM Viktor Chernomyrdin held negotiations with Basayev by phone. The gunmen left the city with the authorities granting them a “free corridor” to go to Chechnya on buses.
On Oct. 23, 2002, terrorists occupied the Dubrovka theater center in Moscow taking 912 hostages. After two days, the Russian authorities stormed the building using an unidentified narcotic gas. 130 hostages died, most of them from the effects of the gas. 40 of the hostage takers were killed.

The worthy suggestion you have made--finding out just who/what the people are before forming an opinion--is best accomplished through normal channels. If these people are among the persecuted, then normal channels are equipped to determine that fact in a timely manner, and they would be welcome.
You mention the "Geneva Convention." It would be helpful to remember that none of the Muslim countries we are in conflict with have ever been signatories to any of the several Geneva Conventions.
The Conventions were a series of meetings that established contracts between a number of nations. They took place over a span of several years, and set out the rules that warring parties who had signed on would adhere to--they would wear recognizable uniforms, prisoners would be accorded certain kinds of treatment, etc.
Even if Islamic countries had been signatories, they would not now be eligible for the treatment laid out in the Conventions. Their conduct breaks the terms of the contracts, and so they would no longer be eligible to be treated according to them.
That is a moot point, however, since they did not sign on.
I must agree with the posters who have little to no concern for these Iranians who have crossed our borders illegally. This alone, any potential refugee status notwithstanding, makes them criminals.
The fact that our Leaders, who have sworn to defend our country against its enemies, both foreign and domestic, do not care to do so, nevertheless does not make it OK to ignore the fact that we are a soverign nation,and that it is we who set the terms under which people may enter our country.

Those clever masters of tracking people, the KGB, used to invisibly 'powder' areas that they suspected spies or dissidents of breaching, and then could use a special light to follow them wherever they went.
Double-agents were caught and elusive tourists were shadowed easily.
Couldn't something similar be invisibly 'dusted' along the borders? Then, whenever anyone was picked up, all they would need to do is 'blacklight' their shoes, etc. and prove that they had crossed illegally. And ship them back.
Something has to be done to derail this endless train of infiltration.
I don't care if 99.9% of the illegal aliens just want to mow lawns, the massive numbers crossing mean that .1% is sufficient jihadists to smuggle in some WMD method of mowing down tens of thousands of Americans.
