Allah said true believers renounce their agreements with Jews. So the several hundred truce violations by the so called Palestinian side, are the results being true believers. I guess it's sort of like "rank has it's privileges". If you are a true believer, you are privileged, as well. It is your privilege then to make and break as many agreements with Jews as you can. Think about it, if breaking one agreement with Jews makes Allah happy, just think what breaking many agreements with Jews does for him. Allah must be ecstatic, and overwhelmed with joy...

Not living in Israel, it's a little churlish of me to offer advice, but from where I sit (in Midtown Manhattan) I think the best option for the Israelis is to rid the area of Palestinians completely. There are so many choices: the sea, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, or death. There would be a period of howling from Israel's European friends , but at the end of the day, everyone would know it's the best thing to do.

Surely you were being sarcastic about Israel's "European friends". Outside of a few of the former Soviet block countries like Poland and Czech Republic, there aren't any, are there?

There is no need to drive anyone out, though the Israelis have as a great a right a right to force local local Arabs (renamed post-1967 the "Palestinian people") from areas where they could be considered a threat as did the tolerant Czechs with the Sudeten Germans in 1946-47. Israel won the Sinai, Gaza, and what we call, rather preposterously, the "West Bank" (a toponym made up by the Arabs after 1948 to avoid using the terms "Judea" and "Samaria" which had been employed, all over the entire Western world, on English and Italian and French and German and Dutch and Spanish maps and texts, for two thousand years). They gave up, quite unnecessarily, 90% of that territory, with several oil wells and three major airbases, and roads and other infrastructure (including that Red Sea resort that the Egyptians now exploit and advertisements for which are to be found everywhere in Europe), in order to obtain from Egypt exactly what they have, without such concessions or a "Peace Treaty" -- from Syria, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia. That is, they got exactly nothing except the absence of open warfare, while the contiinued hostility constantly fomented in the Egyptian official media, and in every niche of every nook of every cranny of Egyptian hysterical public life continues to foment this hostility and nurture the worst kind of antisemitism.

Nor were the Czechs alone. The Poles expelled Germans for the same security reasons. Others simply took over territory and proceeded to make them part and parcel of the nation -- just the way Italy did with the Sudtirol, now Alto Adige, which when Italy won it from Austria, was fully 97% German-speaking, filled with people who considered themselves Austrians. It didn't matter to Italy, and it shouldn't matter to us -- does it? Why the Israelis did not simply annex, once and for all, in June 1967, when the civilized world had not yet been subject to the full panoply of OPEC-funded propaganda, remains a mystery. Israel's inability to act in its own interest continues to astonish. One might not object, except that if Israel goes under, it will have great consequences for Jews, and also for Christians, when the Muslims reassert control over Jerusalem -- as a fatwa just issued this past year by the European Council of Fatwas makes clear is the aim: a Muslim Jerusalem, a Muslim al-Quds. Can the Western world live with that?

The answer is that, given that circumstances have awakened the dormant virus of Islam, or rather that the accidental OPEC wealth has allowed, and given the possibly fatal mistake of allowing large numbers of Muslims to settle behind what are Infidel lines (and there to be treated with kid gloves, rather than as the enemy to Infidels they must be, precisely to the extent that they really believe in what is written in Qur'an, Hadith, and Sira), one cannot assume that a Muslim takeover of Israel (which would be morally completely unacceptable, and would have untellable consequences for Western morale, for the ability of Western man to continue to exist), and the attendant mass-murder and mass-destruction (and mass exodus of Jews fleeing the country to which they had returned after two thousand years of exile, and for which they will not be given a second change -- a spectacle that would be intolerable to Western man, whose best members have at long last begun to understand the injustice done over time to the most persecuted tribe in human history), and a Muslim takeover would also deprive the world's Christians of the current unfettered access to the sites of the Christian Holy Land that only the Israelis have been able to guarantee.

Sharon is in the midst of a colossal blunder. He has no good reason to do what he is doing. It will lead to nothing, except to the swelling of Arab and Muslim pride that they managed to push back the Israelis and force them to close down "settlements." It will demoralize not only Israelis, but non-Muslims everywhere. It will hearten those actively engaged in Jihad. Yet Sharon, that foolish old man, does not know how to admit he was wrong, or have a referendum, or do the decent thing and resign, in confusion and embarrassment. Instead, having made a wrong decision, he is obstinately going to follow through. And the American government, which has more resources at its command, and where cooler heads can see the likely effect of this pullback in Gaza to Muslim morale (and whatever week or two of Arab "goodwill" this wins means nothing), and thus Sharon's mistake, if we permit it, will damage us as well.

We know where the fools are -- they are all about us, in the pages of every newspaper, and on every television channel. And in the corridors of power in the U.N., and the E.U., and even in parts of the State Department. But where are the clear thinkers? And why are they not, without fanfare, working to undo Sharon's dangerous and permanently damaging plan, which no longer commands the support even of that thoroughly confused, and leftist-led population, the hapless Israelis, who deserve better leaders, and more from their only powerful ally, whose duty it should be to save Israel in spite of itself -- that is, in spite of people like Sharon, or Peres, or the rest of that dismal crew.

Actually, I disagree with Hugh about Gaza. Gaza is worthless to Israel, both in terms of security and of economic advantage. Occupying the Strip meant everlasting expense and stress: Israel - total population five million - had to find ways to control, govern and repress one million fanatical Arabs in that tiny stretch of land alone. Consider the geography: that same one million enemies border on Israel ontwo sides - a virtual siege - and on sterile desert on the third. Israel holds the border and can react at any time when anyone is dumb enough to lob one of their primitive rockets over the walls of the besieged fortress. Any of them who want to work have to either commute to Israel, as they already do, or emigrate, thus reducing the demographic pressure in the area. In short, I think that to lose this poisoned mouthful improves rather than weakens the Israeli strategic situation. Remember, war and occupation are expensive pastimes; anything that safely reduces expensive military occupations is good news for a country with limited resources.

I think the American government is pushing Sharon and not the other way around. My only hope is that the US's inducement for Sharon to withdraw is a solemn promise to back him to the hilt if the Palestinians don't stop attacking Israelis despite obvious efforts by the Israelis to withdraw to the pre-67 borders.
