Leading Egyptian Government Daily Al-Akhbar: "Al-Zarqawi is an American Agent"

One sould never think that a good loud laugh could be got out of the murder of hundreds of innocents, but I must say that our Egyptian friends - so fond of feeling that they are the intellectual heart, the most civilized, urban, and urbane of all Arabs - have risen to the occasion. This sort of thing ought to be disseminated all over the West, broadcast on TV and placed on the front pages of leading newspapers; it would teach the public so much more than even the worst jihadi atrocity.

OT: good news from the Bleedin' Biased Crapperation. It seems that "Don't Panic I'm Islamic" has caused a firestorm of letters of protest. It was discussed on Ray Snoddy's Newswatch - a weekly review of viewer reactions - on BBC 24. It was painful and hilarious to see the producer simply fail to understand how his oh-so-sensitive reporting could have left so many viewers with the impression that his subjects were brutes, fanatics, arrogant, or in love with violence.

The Muslim countries, and Muslims themselves, seem predisposed to nonsense, lies, conspiracy theories, crazy rumors, to a far greater degree than any other peoples or polities.

One must ask: why? What is it about Islam itself, and the habits of mind it encourages or inculcates, that help explain the remarkable and constant display of this nonsense, those lies, those conspiracy theories and rumors?

Surely it is that, in Islam, fellow Muslims can do no wrong, and it is the Infidels -- viewed through the prism of Islam -- who are to blame for everything. The mental desarroi that Islam creates allows for the Believer to believe one thing, and the next minute its opposite, or to believe them both at the same time.

The various "theories" about who was behind the 9/aa attacks -- the blame put first on Israel ("no Jews showed up for work that day" etcetera), and now on the United States -- can be offered, with a straight face, not by some demented fellow who wanders the streets, or to attempts to place his mad antisemitic rants, let us say, at this website, but by people who seem, from the outside, to be respectable journalists, or political figures -- and so they are, respectable and respected in their own quasi-demented worlds, quasi-demented societies.

This is something Western statesmen cannot quite understand or believe. And another thing they cannot quite believe is the extent to which, for Western audiences, this or that Muslim ruler can put on a semi-plausible version of a thougtful, rational, moderate human being, and among his own, or even to an Infidel who chooses to inquire further, to continue a line of questioning that, if not quite up to the usual expected standards of obsequiousness, may lead the Muslim interviewee to reveal a kind of fury and hysteria underneath. This has happened a number of times, when someone -- Oriana Fallaci, say, or Tim Sebastian, or someone else, decides not to play the game of so many Western journalists, and be quite so oblivious to the nonsense being delivered -- and then all hell can, and does, break loose.

On the one hand, the entire Arab and Muslim world (with the exception of some Iranian dissidents -- i.e., dissidents from Islam) were delirious with joy on the afternoon of 9/11. Horns honked, feasts were held all over Saudi Arabia. Frank Gardner (has he recovered yet), normally an apologist for the Arabs, reported--reluctantly -- for the BBC on how people were full of joy in Cairo. In Ramallah and all over the West Bank and Gaza people wildly celebrated, until their rulers understood that the filmed scenes of such celebration would do them no good in the West. And the same celebration was reported directly from Hamza Street in Beirut, and in Baghdad, and everywhere.

So, from the Muslim and especially Arab Muslim point of view, the 9/11 attack was a Good Thing. Those arrogant Americans had it coming.

Yet, on the other hand, and at the same time, that Good Thing was in fact committed by either "the Jews" or "the Americans" themselves.

No doubt the latter theory has gained credence in that crazy Muslm world as more and more Muslims are coming to realize that more and more Infidels will no longer rely on Muslim "Outreach," nonsensical Interfaith Dialogues that are merely instruments to dull the wits of the Infidels and confuse them, and that even Western leaders, with their poppycock about the religion of "peace" and "tolerance" are only earning, every time they utter such phrases, the suspicion and contempt of those they presume to instruct, and to whom they owe the duty of the truth, or something very like the truth.

An article representative of Egypt, of Egyptian thought, of the Egyptian mentality today. And of the Arab mentality. And of the Muslim mentality, to the extent that those born into the faith choose, out of fear or filial piety or -- in many cases -- complete brainwashed belief -- to remain in it.

Such pieces should be widely studied by the American administration. The mistakes they have made in the Middle East, and in Iraq, have been partly the result of misunderstanding the nonsense, lies, rumors, sheer craziness of much of the Muslim world. If they understand that, they will no longer put their trust in a handful of unrepresentative, Western-educated smoothies who manage to exploit American power for their own ends, and will deal with the situation not with that plausible elite that can, at a moment's notice, tell the Ameridans what they know those Americans want to hear, but with the masses whose mental growth has been permanently stunted by Islam, and who are quite at home with, indeed only at home with, that nonsense, those lies, those conspiracy theories.

I finally read Daniel Pipes' book, The Hidden Hand. The Arabs, including some of their leadership, ARE serious about these conspiracy theories.

When everything is "Allah's will", there is no scientific cause and effect. When something bad happens, they are simply being punished for not being Islamic enough.
