MIAMI -- Attorneys for two terrorism suspects tied to an alleged al-Qaida dirty bomb suspect are asking for the dismissal of a federal indictment against them based on a jailer's mishandling of a Quran and intimidating jail cell searches that removed handwritten papers in Arabic.The defense claims the seizures from the cells of Adhan Amin Hassoun and Kifah Wael Jayyousi in May and June amount to government misconduct and an unconstitutional intrusion on trial preparation.
Jailers also disrespectfully tossed Hassoun's Quran on his bunk and left 8,000 pages of trial papers in disarray, his attorney Kenneth Swartz said in motions filed Friday.
Hassoun, a Lebanese-born Palestinian, and Jayyousi, a Jordanian national and U.S. citizen, face possible life prison sentences on charges of plotting to fund and support Islamic jihad through murder and kidnappings abroad, including Bosnia, Chechnya and Somalia.
``By depriving the defendants of the confidentiality of their own case-related notes, the government has destroyed any possible confidence that their case can be prepared with privacy,'' the men's attorneys wrote.
The defense also is asking for an order to either release the men from solitary confinement or on house arrest. Alicia Valle, spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office, said Monday that prosecutors would respond in writing, but both motions said the federal trial attorney opposed them.
Messages left at the downtown jail where the men are detained by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons were not immediately returned. The defense said the warden responded to a March request by Hassoun for a change in jail conditions by saying he was a ``security threat.''
The Federal Detention Center has held other inmates deemed administrative risks, notably drug kingpins, in solitary for years despite defense protests.
On the Quran, a jail officer took a piece of paper with Arabic writing, but Hassoun explained that he had copied an excerpt from the holy book and showed him the matching text. The officer returned the paper and tossed the Quran on the bed.
``Even the U.S. military has said that's not the kind of treatment you give a holy book, so I guess FDC hasn't come to that conclusion,'' Swartz said Monday.

She already had accomplished plenty: a master's in business administration, an analyst's position at Bank One, and motherhood, too. Still, Aisha Zaidi hadn't fulfilled her dream of becoming a lawyer.
Asifa Quraishi started an e-mail network, MuslimJD, in 1996 for Muslim lawyers and law students. The group became the National Association of Muslim Lawyers, which incorporated in 2000. She joined the University of Wisconsin Law School faculty last year.
Then came Sept. 11, 2001. In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks, Muslims in America faced heightened scrutiny. Federal agencies began questioning and detaining Muslims. Some were deported. Many had a hard time boarding a plane. Others were too nervous to leave the country for fear they wouldn't be allowed to return.
As the headlines kept coming, Zaidi reconsidered her career goals.
"Being Muslim in this country, with everything that happened, it just seemed like we needed Muslim lawyers and we needed to defend ourselves," said Zaidi, 32, of Mequon. So last fall, while nine months pregnant with her second child, Zaidi enrolled in Marquette University Law School.
More American Muslims are entering the legal profession, and they are finding a young but increasingly sophisticated network will support them. Though exact figures are not tracked, leaders in the Muslim legal community said the interest in law school is definitely on the rise in their community, as it has been in the general population.
While demographics explain some of the trend - the number of Muslims in the United States is disputed (from 1 million to 7 million), but it's believed to be growing through immigration, births and conversions - some aspiring Muslim lawyers say the aftermath of the 2001 attacks proved hugely influential in their career choice.
Furthermore, the new generation of Muslim lawyers, for the most part, grew up in the United States and doesn't face the language barriers that kept past generations of immigrant Muslims from entering law. And while medicine and engineering have long been high-status jobs within immigrant Muslim communities, lawyers are starting to get the same respect.
This past Sunday I was perusing the religion section of my local Barnes and Noble.
I got to the Islam portion (which has expanded quite a bit since my last visit) and noticed many folks picking up, flipping through and tossing back the numerous "translations" of the Qur'an which were stocked.
Not a person I noticed took particular care when "handling" the "sacred" text. Far from it.
The respect shown towards the Qur'an was deliberate or most likely, non deliberate, as any other book which proliferated the emporium.
Of course, the attitudes of these "mishandlers", will change once religious defamation laws are enacted.

Durbin’s Slander
Richard Durbin, the Democratic senator from Illinois, cries that “right-wing media” have wrenched his recent jeremiad against interrogation techniques at U.S. detention centers from its proper context. Let us pause, then, to consider in detail what he said, and to ask what, exactly, he could have been thinking.
Speaking on the Senate floor, Durbin quoted from the report of an FBI agent who claims to have seen
a detainee chained hand and foot in a fetal position to the floor, with no chair, food, or water. Most times they urinated or defecated on themselves, and had been left there for 18–24 hours or more. . . . On one occasion . . . the temperature was so cold in the room, that the barefooted detainee was shaking with cold. . . . . On another occasion, not only was the temperature unbearably hot, but extremely loud rap music was being played in the room.
Durbin then said, “If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime — Pol Pot or others — that had no concern for human beings.”

Whatever the Durbin Democrats’ motives, they are doing incalculable damage to the cause they swear to support — the war on terror. Asked about Durbin's outburst, Cheney began by telling WWTN Nashville radio host Steve Gill: " I'm sure [this is] a family program, Steve. I have to be careful what I say." Then the VP leveled both barrels at the Democrat's reckless complaint that Guantanamo detainees are subject to Nazi-like treatment.

Muslim demands that the Quran be handled in a manner intended to accomodate THEIR religious belief that WE'RE too filthy to touch THEIR 'holy' book, are demands the rest of us have no obligation to either accept or adhere to.
Non-Muslims, acting in government capacity, should be expected to handle the Quran in a manner no more respectful, or less, than any other religious text. THEIR book should no longer receive special treatment. And it never should have.

What you're seeing on your screen at this moment is that same depot, the building that stored all the Gitmo weapons and ammo, in which the terrorists were making a desperate last stand...that building is now a burning inferno. I believe part of the opposition to the Civil Rights act was because many were afraid that blacks would get privledges that other citizens did not have, which eventually did happen (quotas, denial of equal protection to white citizens in government services,contracts, etc.)
Martin Luther King Jr. himself, in his "I have a dream" speech, mentioned the plight of poor whites as well is that of poor blacks.
The suffragists were against the right to vote for black men if all women were not allowed to vote as well. Was this racism, or the demand for equality for all of the nations citizens?
I agree that special handling of Islams holy book is an outrage, and is showing government preference for one religion. Where is the ACLU?

Two things happened after the vote.
It was realized that the tide had shifter in America, and institutionalized racism would no longer be tolerated.
So Dixecrats faced a decision. Either change their politics, or change party, or find another line of work. In the above list, several careers ended in the 60's.
Thurmond, Helms changed party (I thought there were more) and were perhaps the two most anti-civil rights legislators in the Senate. If they mellowed, it wasn't by much.
Ervin was an interesting character. Nevermind Watergate and McCarthy but given his opposition to "no-knock" search laws.. one wonders what he would've made of the "patriot act"
Stennis, like a number of Southern politicians came around and by the 70's was outpsoken for civil rights. He pushed for women in the military, cutting funds for segregated school districts..
Etc.

The Dixiecrats objected to Truman's adding planks furthering the cause of civil liberties.. overseeing the integration of the armed forces, didn't endear him to Southern democrats either.
They didn't jump to the Republican party in 1948. But more or less founded their own party, one which would last some 30 years.

NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico (AP) -- Zooming around in sport utility vehicles bristling with weapons, Mexican soldiers-turned-drug hit men have taken this border city to the brink of anarchy, infiltrating local police and threatening anyone who gets in their way.
Residents and law enforcement officials say the men are the feared Zetas, former members of a military intelligence battalion sent to the border to fight drug trafficking. Instead, they joined the Gulf Cartel, one of Mexico's top drug gangs. They adopted the name Zetas -- a radio code for a military commander -- recruited followers and made the city of 300,000 their home base.
For the past two years, the city of tree-covered plazas and hacienda-style restaurants has lived in a state of siege. Many residents are afraid to leave their homes at night, and few tourists venture over from Laredo, Texas, leaving the city's handful of horse-drawn buggies idle.
Killings and police corruption became so brazen that President Vicente Fox was forced to send in hundreds of troops and federal agents in March, and the only man brave enough to take the job of police chief was gunned down hours after he was sworn in this month.
Since then, soldiers and federal agents have flooded the streets, patrolling in trucks and setting up checkpoints. Still, daytime street killings are commonplace.

I think they should be chained together - and made to clean up the pile of garbage in Basra - JUST for starters.
