MOSUL, Iraq (AFP) - A top aide to Al-Qaeda frontman Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has been captured in Iraq's northern city of Mosul, the US military revealed.Mohammed Khalaf Shakar, also known as Abu Talha, is "Zarqawi's most trusted operations agent in all of Iraq," a military statement said Thursday.
"This is a major defeat for the Al-Qaeda's terrorist organisation in Iraq. Zarqawi's leader in Mosul is out of business," said US Air Force Brigadier General Donald Alston.
According to the military statement, he surrendered to US and Iraqi forces on Tuesday without a fight in "a quiet neighbourhood in Mosul" after they were led to his whereabouts by "multiple intelligence sources."
"According to former Talha associates, Talha never stayed more than one night at any one residence," the statement added.
Alston, the new top military spokesman, told reporters in Baghdad: "Numerous reports indicated he wore a suicide vest 24 hours a day and stated he would never surrender. Instead Talha gave up without a fight."
Iraqi authorities said recently they had captured one of Abu Talha's most trusted aides and his financial manager, Motleq Mahmud Motleq Abdullah, also known as Abu Raed, in Mosul on May 28.
They had also announced the arrest of another Zarqawi aide in Mosul known as Mullah Mehdi.
Abu Talha is accused of masterminding some of the deadliest attacks against US and Iraqi forces in Mosul. Iraq's third-largest city, it has been a major front for the insurgency since November.
"Talha fell like so many others fall, and that is through a combination of factors that ultimately catch up to him," Alston said.
"In his case like so many others along the way, civilians helped us get closer to him."
A positive sign.
The Coalition forces have been slammed by the usual suspects (I will not call them "anti-war" because few of them are truly pacifists) for failing to win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people.
Perhaps that's true, but I'd hazard a guess that the Coalition forces have done a far better job of this than "Al Qaeda in Iraq" has.

They can only be truly understood experientially. The end of a seeker’s journey can often be a world view eventually derived through critical thinking and common sense after having passed through ancestrally acquired belief systems in a search for truth and meaning. These people have an advantage when it comes to understanding fanaticism and delusional thinking on a more intimate level. That is why people who have fled Islam are so important in the fight against Judaists.

Realizing our limited perception (frequency and bandwidth limitations of sensory organs) and limited ability to comprehend (finite human brain capacity) a reasonable person can't help but conclude that we don't and indeed cannot see or understand reality in its entirety. It is a true ‘cloud of unknowing’ that cannot be penetrated. Therefore any statements about the larger reality beyond our perception (including God) come from the human imagination and not from scientific fact.
Many people have claimed throughout history to have received messages from God often with contradictory information. A personal creative benign God who loves us as individuals and watches out for us would be wonderful. It is just wishful thinking however. The obvious truth is we live in a hostile universe and the thing looking out for us is ourselves. The only thing we have is each other. That is the best reason to get along with one another that I can imagine.

Iran has never met a terrorist organization it didn't like. Severe personality disorders are incurable I understand and although it is fun to pull chains, the reaction becomes so predictable that the fun fades rapidly. My point about Iran for those who might care, was not at all a slap at the invasion of Iraq by coalition forces. For example, we did not invade the home islands of Japan because they attacked the US. We strangled them by cutting them off from the sea and picking off their island empire one at the time. Without invading Iraq where would we stage to neutralize our other other Islamist enemies? Who cares about weapons of mass destruction ( or mass deception ), one more tin horn Islamist dictator is gone and we are much closer to Iran. They can feel our breath on their necks. Can the White House issue a press release in this regard? I don't think so. Why? Had Bush not already decided on war with Iraq, we could easily have committed double if not triple the number of troops in Afghan. and surrounded Tora Bora and flushed Osama out instead of letting Osama get away. Iraq wan't going any where, and as it wasn't the nexus of world terror, there was no point to making Iraq a springboard. Afghanistan was pacified fairly quickly, we don't have one tenth the nonsense there that we have in Iraq. And had we captured Bin Laden, it would've been a huge propaganda victory as well as an important dent in Al-Quaeda. Use Iraq as a spring board? No I don't think so, not for a long time yet. We're too busy fighting the jihadists in Iraq to cause Iran any worries.
On the other hand, given that we know the 9/11 hijackers (most of them) passed through Iran which did not stamp their passports, a violation of int. law as well, nobody would have said boo. Had we done that, there would be no more Iran A-bomb threat. THe nexus of world terror would be scuttled. And if your a mad zionist, you're deluding yoruself if you think the IDF was more worried about Saddam than Iranian Shehab missles. I've given them a taste of what they have been giving for months. Not surprisingly they can't handle it. The best they can muster is cheap taunts and rhetoric "breathing down my neck" (its hard to take anyone seriously who issues veiled threats on the internet), and its hard to take anyone seriously who didn't realize that Afghanistan borders Iran.
Most the folks around here are good at beating their chests, putting down other Americans, and blabbing platitudes about how they would kick jihadist butt if only they were given the chance.
On the other hand, there just may be one or two people capable of serious discussion. So that is the main reason I am here. And to see what new chestnuts Spancer and his buddies have dug up on the jihadists.
With respect to "Never cared for Bush but -at least he acts,"
Yes, he acts like an amateur, which is what he is. But I admit has has improved somwhat since that incidnet when a Chines Jet collided with a US spy plane in international waters and Bush apologized twice to China. Now thats what I call action.

Don't disagree about the shortcomings of all current politicos. (While Clinton was being chased for chasing tail, the Republican Party let national security drift in their hot pursuit of a stained dress... just f*cking brilliant.) Clinton also could have used the opportuinity that Yeltsin presented (as a drinking buddy), and solidified our unity with the Russian people during their shaky tranmsition from dictatorship to current and unfortunate mafia-ski-ocracy, but he dropped that ball, big time. (A 1990's Peace Corps for Russian would have helped both nations immensely.)
I find Bush about a 15 watt bulb, but Kerry appeared to misunderstand the times we live in, prattling about "meeting the international test", which could only alieniate enough haredcore America Firsters to lose him election, which it did. His record after Nam, in reporting openly to Congress what should have been done behind closed doors (aiding the enemies of the U.S. by accusing the troops of unverified war crimes, which he admitted also taking part in, oddly) wasn't impressive, and I wish there had been a more serious third choice this past November.
2008 needs a more determined foe of the enemies of Civilization.
Which includes being more historically informed, diplomatically cunning [AKA a suave b.s. artist like Clinton... NOT alienating countries unnecessarily by opposing "feel-good, essentially window-dressing treaties" like the U.S./Russian test ban protocols or by smiling and merely schmoozing along with the "Kyoto Accord" to "look responsible", if nothing else] but with the testicular fortitude to risk his career to defend his country.
Bush showed some of this, but has fizzled after not getting Osama in Afghanistan... although I'll accept the WMD search in Iraq as a worthwhile gamble, since to NOT have checked, and had one hit us from Hussein's potentially-still-hidden arsenal would have been criminal negligence from any president.
Politiians are a loathesome bunch, in general, and should know it internally, and just protect their nation, above all. This means a lot of massaging the feelings of other lands while you go your own way ultimately. But, at least you have not kicked them in the shins as you also essentially ignore them.
Kennedy was a good at this. And FDR.
