Two men have been jailed for life for killing a man wrongly targeted in a dispute between Sikhs and Muslims.Shimraz Kahn, 35, got a minimum of 18 years for the murder of Major Singh Gill at his West Midlands shop. Waheed Akhtar, 22, was given 15 years.
The men believed Mr Gill's Sikh son was in a relationship with a young Muslim woman, Stafford Crown Court was told.
Two others were found not guilty. Two further suspects are believed to have fled to Pakistan....
Prosecutor Anthony Barker, QC said Mr Gill was the victim of a deliberate and planned killing.
"Some men had clubs, iron bars and hockey sticks and inside the shopkeeper was clubbed to death," he said.
"Yet the people who killed him had set out to kill someone else.
"They killed a perfectly innocent man who had done absolutely nothing."
He said the story behind the killing was complicated but involved the relationship of a Sikh man and a Muslim woman.

In fact, when it comes to honour killings the courts have treated them just like any other murder; so soft sentences for 'cultural' factors.
However, in a general sense we in the West do need to wake up. Honour killings stem from a tribal and backward attitude to women. In Islam, this was fossilised into a belief system in the 7th century and is still there. Other religions, in the past very misogynist, have moved on. Islam has not.

The walking Islamic cadaver (Moutasadeq) that aided Muhamad Atta on 9/11 received about 1.83 days in jail for each murder he abetted (sentence of 15 years TOTAL for accessory to 3,000 murders) which was then overturned because America didn't give him "defense access" to the arch terrorists who planned the whole affair.... This is such a sad story. A hardworking father of three -- three children lose a parent because of the "honor" of a few punks. It's sickening.
Interested: it's not such a problem to get a life sentence for these punks today in England, when non-Muslims still outnumber Muslims by a large amount.
But later on, when they get more numerous, when they start to routinely obstruct justice by rioting, burning and killing to keep subhuman monsters like this out of jail for "only" killing an infidel -- that's when you have to worry.

Yes, I suppose we could keep the men on Death Row for the same period, while they ate up resources, tied up the legal system exhausting the ever complex appeals process, requests for pardons etc.
We don't have the death penalty in the UK. Most states in the US don't either.
These men were convicted. OJ Simpson and Michael Jackson were not.

It is worthwhile retaining as an ultimate response in reserve even if you almost never use it, because of the unknown future possibilities.

"Life, without possibility of parole" seems a tad mild a sentence for mass murder.

Big Sleep, I believed that the proportion of states with the death penalty was the opposite of what you tell me is the situation. I take it from your comment that most states do not invoke it very often.
The difference in England and Wales (Scotland and N>Ireland have their own legal system)is that we do not have the different degrees of murder. Our homicides are either murder, for which the penalty is a mandatory life imprisonment (with a discretion being around the possible parole period)or manslaughter, where the Judge does have discretion about the sentence. Only the Home Secretary could authorise a stay of execution, the Judge had to impose that death sentence. One of the reasons the death penalty was abolished, and remains abolished, was that juries were aquitting because they would not send the defendant to the gallows.
The situation you describe would be an act of war and different criteria would apply.

Sikhs are good people who work hard and are no trouble. Their contribution the war effort in WW 1 and 2 to the Allied cause has been largely unmentioned. Moreover, they integrate well in society. However, Sikhs are not anyones dhimmis. This murder of a Sikh by the followers of the RoP, is not going to go unanswered.
