"US echoes Australian warning against travel to Malaysia," from AFP, with thanks to Jeffrey Imm:
The United States backed a warning from Australia advising against travelling to Malaysia's Borneo coast, saying it was also concerned that terrorists planned to kidnap foreigners there. The Malaysian Government criticised Wednesday's Australian travel warning on the east coast of Sabah state, saying that tourist destinations there are safe and that Canberra had failed to consult Malaysia over the announcement.
But the US embassy here noted that several kidnappings and piracy incidents had already occurred in the area this year, perpetrated by criminals and the Philippines-based Abu Sayyaf group.
"There are indications of continued planning of kidnappings, including of foreigners, in eastern Sabah's coastal areas and offshore islands," it said in a statement which reiterated an ongoing US State Department warning.

The Malay govt can go take a hike.
Washington and Canberra have first responsibility to the well being and safety of their citizens, not to Kualalampur's delicate sensitivities.
/am looking fwd to the day when most of the moslem world comes under "travel caution" lists. These freakin' gasoles deserve no remuneration in western tourist money.
Goto Bali and Phuket but not to or Java or Yala. Both for your own safety as well as for ideological (anti-jihad) reasons.
Question: Why would an infidel who's in danger of having his head cut off travel to a Muslim country in the first place? You'd never see me in countries where the Quran is the most read book / toilet-paper!
Yes, "moderate" Malaysia, where the Chinese and Hindus hold up the economy, and the Muslim Malays seize part of it as disguised jizya under the Bumiputra system. Malaysia, where former President Mahathir Mohamed delivers a crowd-pleaser at the Organization of Islamic Countries about the need for Muslim countries to "modernize" -- and for what? In order to acquire military technology that is equal to that which the Infidels possess.
And that seemed to be his entire interest in, and definition of, "progress."
Malaysia.
Since when is Australia obliged to 'consult' with any country on travel warnings? Especially Malaysia, with its unenviable record of racial and religious violence and its toleration of hate-spewing bigots like Mahathir.
The Muslim Malays have special laws, but still they lag behind the Chinese and Indians.
I hope that the day comes soon when travel warnings are issued for all Muslim countries - it will be interesting to watch them cope without the precious infidel dollar.
