But Jihad Watch reader Miss Moneypenney has alerted me to a posting about me at a silly little site dedicated to "Islamophobia" (a concept I discussed here), which isn't worth sending traffic to with a link, where I am accused of presenting in a "particularly crude and transparent form the sort of double-talk we hear from more sophisticated Islamophobes like Daniel Pipes."
I know Dr. Pipes is a highly sophisticated individual, but my friends, for once I have encountered a personal attack that is really wounding. Unsophisticated, eh? Despite the fact that as I write this here in sunny Secure Undisclosed Locationville I am wearing top hat, tails, and spats, sipping a glass of Veuve Clicquot 1995 La Grande Dame Rose, and enjoying a performance of Pergolesi's delightful Pulcinella? Unsophisticated, eh?
What's that? The guy isn't speaking in general? He's referring to the "crude" and "unsophisticated" nature of my "Islamophobia"? Oh, I see. Well then, let's take a look at what exactly he finds unsophisticated.
He juxtaposes two paragraphs that I have written:

Baptists don't tend to frequent Catholic churches, and vice versa, but America's mosques do not have signs in front that say things like "First Extremist Mosque of Dubuque" or "United Moderate Mosque of Dearborn."
The writer at this "Islamophobia" page evidently thinks that because I am saying there is no separation between the two groups, that they are all jihadists. How unsophisticated of him.

But how do you square all of that with his dislike for Gilligan's Island?
Mr. Spencer's two remarks are not contradictory:
1) "there is no distinction in the American Muslim community between peaceful Muslims and jihadists."
2) "Islam is not a monolith, and never have I said or written anything that characterizes all Muslims as terrorist or given to violence."
The reason they are not contradictory is that #1 is simply stating that the PROCESS by which to discern the difference between moderate Muslims and extremist Muslims is a problematic and very difficult process.
#2 is simply stating the reasonable faith that Islam contains a variety of types of people among its 1.5 billion.
#1 is simply stating that it is extraordinarly difficult to determine, among that 1.5 billion, who is truly moderate, who will remain moderate and committed to support moderation, and who is extremist.
The reasons why it is so difficult to draw this line are fairly easy to list:
1) The tactics of the Muslim jihadists:
a) not wearing military uniforms
b) hiding in civilian houses, hospitals, mosques
c) mingling among the general Muslim population for purposes of hiding, for networking, for engaging in espionage preparatory to commando operations -- all with significant success (suggesting that the general Muslim population apparently doesn't want to help ferret them out, or is afraid to, or both)
2) The increasing incidence of our discovery of Muslim extremists who have come out of the more general pool of Muslims -- a pool that is supposedly less extremist or even at times moderate
3) The reluctance and passivity, and often even semi-collusion, among a large and varied and globally far-flung population of Muslims with regard to their extremist brothers & sisters
4) The globally organic nature of the ideological & emotional aspect of Islam that, while it apparently does not swallow up all the many differences among Muslims world-wide, nevertheless is a real phenomenon that fosters
a) recruitment to various jihads (Bosnia, Chechnya, Afghanistan, Iraq)
b) anti-Jewish hatred
c) anti-Americanism
d) a sense of belonging to the Umma that according to their central text considered to be absolutely divine must be protected and expanded through Jihad -- a sense of belonging that can transcend all other social obligations (the question is not WHETHER it can transcend all other obligations, but WHEN it will, for HOW MANY MUSLIMS it will, and under WHAT CONDITIONS) --
-- fosters these among too wide a swathe of the general Muslim population to rationally ignore.
Bottom Line: So far, we cannot know which so-called moderate Muslims will not either collude with extremist Muslims or even actively join them. As long as the alleged majority of moderate Muslims fail to help us ferret out the bad apples and immobilize them, we must take rational measures to treat them all as potentially extremist, given the horrifically deadly possibilities of terrorist attacks.

The fact is, Moslems have not successfully demonstrated that Islam is capable of a devout observance which is NOT jihadist in nature. Islam is practiced by Moslems in one of two ways:
#1) According to the tenets of Sharia law
#2) Secular, socialist watering of Islamic religious observance
In either answer, the Moslem is still overwhelmingly anti-Semitic, anti-Israel and anti-American.
While the Leftist, or secular Moslems (most notably in Turkey) are the more benign of the two, he is still, nonetheless, hostile toward Jews/Israel/America in much the same way as France is, only more so. He is still going to side with the suicide bomber or Saddam Hussein over the IDF response units or the American military in the Iraq War.
The choice, then, is really between a radical progressive Moslem or a Jihadist terrorist Moslem. In either case the choice reflects poorly on Islam, and doesn't offer any indication that Islam can be practiced devoutly yet peacefully.
Until proven otherwise, Islam remains a primitive and violent faith which is incompatible with any other culture or religion. When secularized, Moslems have still become socialist and hostile towards Christians and Jews.
I simply don't buy the "religion of peace" argument.

It seems that, behind the scenes and covertly, the Bush Administration is proceeding fairly rationally in rounding up and/or impeding problematic Muslims (e.g., the fact that the Bush Administration refused to grant the smarmily "moderate" Euro-Muslim Tariq Ramadan a visa in order to accept the invitation of the Leftist Catholic university of Notre Dame to participate in a long-term "education" program was a wonderful sign of being on the right track).
The prevailing sociopolitical culture of America now, however, is one where PC irrationality is on many important fronts so powerful it hampers our war efforts (e.g., causing our military to think that it is actually helpful to order our soldiers to read Karen Armstrong...!!!).
To answer your question, we are doing far more than we would have under a Kerry Administration, but still much less than we should be doing.

You're right. I neglected to make more explicit in my original post another major factor that frustrates the coalescence of a "moderate Islam" in support of progressive liberal Western rationality: most "moderate" Muslims are not really moderate by any reasonable Western measurement, and therefore lean, in one way or another, toward extremism (their views not only on Jews and Americans, but also on puritanical sexual morality, for example, and on freedom of expression & thought).
Couple this with the "Umma factor" I noted, and it spells a situation in which rationality obliges us to lump the moderates in with the extremists -- unless, again, moderate Muslims in significant numbers start concretely helping us in identifying, ostracizing, and immobilizing the potentially dangerous extremists.
By "lump in with", I don't mean we should be fighting the moderates with deadly force, of course. But we should consider them as potentially dangerous in terms of financial collusion, ideological collusion, material collusion (including hiding extremists or refusing to give us intelligence on extremists), and -- worst case scenario -- undergoing the apparently minimal change of mind it takes from crossing over from "moderation" to actually military jihadist extremism.
What I'm talking about is the rational process of pre-emptive profiling, on a variety of levels, depending on the degree of perceived danger. The police forces of all Western democracies practice this all the time, when it comes to outbreaks of crime, and reasonable people never question that it's necessary, and rarely become hysterical about any "slippery slope" when a deadly crime that randomly threatens innocent people is underway.

I've seen that site before, Robert, in one of my many unsophisticated, boorish internet moments. I was pretty sure I knew the on you were talking about, so I went the lowbrow route of Googling it up on my interwebnetwork contraption, and there it was—a post about you filed under Right Wing. What a maroon. However, you kind of get an idea of the level of sophistication and acumen on a site that espouses the notion of Islam as a race, you know?

I have to admit, I'm plenty familiar with the premise n' all, but isn't that show the Holy Grail of bad 50s-60s TV?
If a proliterian movement had arisen, taken over the United States and handed it over to Soviet Russia, but before doing so had lined up and shot the writers, script editors, producers, directors, actors/actresses...camera operators, boomsmen, stagepeople, sound editors...and what the hell, the go-fers, even...and then burned the film and the set into charred bits...I'd be hard pressed not to say "Fair cop".

I could say a few things about my personal background, culture, and such-like; or, to prove I am sophisticated, I could attack some of the posters to this site I like least - those who like to indulge in images of mass death and treat enemies as though they were not human beings. But I am afraid that I am interested neither in bragging about myself nor in teaching polite language. Sure, some of the more extreme posters to this site may give a bad image; but the fact that the enemy focuses on Mr.Spencer rather than on any of his correspondents shows that ultimately it is his views and his arguments that are really hurting them. And when it comes to the distinction of good and evil, to the decision as to whether it is right or wrong to entertain lunatic ideas of reality and, based on those ideas, to go out and kill real live people, then sophistication is wrong. In that case, goodness is simple, blunt, even stupid; thou shalt not kill; thou shalt not steal; thou shalt not give false witness. Any sophisticated argument goes down against these stolid, unmovable markers of human behaviour and human thoughts. Be as sophisticated as you like in the analysis of what is done wrong (I have just had a tremendous experience reading pages 410-416 of THE GULAG ARCHIPELAGO, where Solzhenitsyn analyzes the reasons for the moral collapse of Bukharin and his colleagues in front of Stalin's torturers); but when it comes to simple and obvious wrong, be as simple and obvious as it. Forcing 'Gitmo' detainees to watch reruns of 'that 60's show' would certainly catch the attention of both Newsweek and the ACLU, and should also elevate further instances of the 'Quranic flush' interegation tactic to its righful level of mere nuisance.

I like this sentence Paolo, it describes the apologists/deniers quite well, as they are oh so sophisticated, oh so erudite, oh so intellectual, oh so above and beyond making absolute judgments. Of course, absolute judgments are insane because there are no absolutes!
I have tried to psyche myself up to think like relativists and it is comparable to being half blind, or maybe closing one eye and trying to see everything out of the other one. It's hard to describe but it is immensely disconcerting. Denial comes in many disguised forms but the most annoying is the self-righteous certitude of the egalitarian social engineers. If they allowed themselves to see what "lies before their eyes", they would have to admit their own ineptitude and fallibility, and they will never do that.
Just as some people insist on fixing what isn't broken, other insist on making simplicity complicated. Such a waste of time, both.
I would love to "forget" them as you advised, but they're too intractable to ignore.
