TAMPA - When Sami Al-Arian called for jihad, was he just encouraging the struggle of Palestinians to recover their homeland or was he stoking a holy war?
This is a distinction without a difference in any case. Hamas' Charter, for example, places the Palestinian Arab struggle firmly in the context of jihad war, and PIJ is no different. Indeed, it is because of the jihad ideology that no negotiated settlement has been possible in Israel.
As a government translator testified in Al-Arian's trial, the word jihad has several meanings. Both sides in the trial had different ideas about what Al- Arian was saying.Al-Arian repeatedly used the word jihad when he spoke at events relating to the Palestinian cause between 1989 and 1991.
The translator, Tahsim Ali, a contract linguist for the FBI, did not give the English translation of jihad when he prepared transcripts of Al-Arian's words. Ali said he left words such as jihad and intifada in their Arabic forms because they are commonly used in English, as well.
During cross-examination, Al-Arian attorney Linda Moreno asked Ali about the meaning. Consulting a book, Ali said it means ``striving, [and is] used to mean both quest for holiness and waging a holy war.''
He agreed it also can mean ``striving your utmost'' and ``struggling to achieve a goal.''
Krigsman later asked how to judge the meaning, and Ali said he goes by the context.
The prosecutor then pointed to several instances in which Al-Arian used the word, including when he said: ``Thus is the way of jihad. Thus is the way of martyrdom. Thus is the way of blood, because this is the path to heaven.''
"The way of blood." Yes, clearly he was referring to the "quest for holiness."
Al-Arian is on trial along with Sameeh Hammoudeh Hatim Naji Fariz and Ghassan Zayed Ballut on charges they helped organize and finance the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, an organization in Israel and the occupied territories that has been linked to terrorist activity.
In the New Testament, "War in Heaven" is easy enough to distinguish from terrestrial war. It's very hard to justify any Christian participation in war. Thomas Aquinas formulated the concept of the "just war" but not all modern Christians would go along with him. There is a very strong pacifist tradition in Christianity, but I think, not in Islam.
"Jihad" may be an ambigious concept, but the fact that there is room for a literal interpration (an interpratation long accepted by most Moslems) points to a very basic difference between the two faiths, even if both have resorted to bloodshed in the past.
I yearn for ther day when some western leader of conscience (and consequence) will start the real western response by declaring "jihad" to be the enemy. Of course, short of naming islam itself as the problem - which may possibly never happen - this is probably the most realistic we can hope any US prez will get.
It doesn't get plainer than this: "Thus is the way of jihad. Thus is the way of martyrdom. Thus is the way of blood, because this is the path to heaven."
And where does the prescription for "the path to heaven" come from? From the Koran, of course! And who declares the Koran as their holy book? Muslims, of course!
I'm waiting to see the moderates rush to testify in the Al-Arian case. Or will they stay out of this so as not to jeopardize their salvation?
Slight problem for the defense: Jurors in the south say what they mean and mean what they say.
If only they could have gotten this tried in Boston or San Francisco( where the smart people are. )
The prosecutors should be sure to have on hand not only all of the passages in the Qur'an that advocate aggressive Jihad (they need look only for the word "qital" or combat, which appears 27 times), but the most "authentic" Hadith, as judged by Al-Bukhari and Muslim (and make sure the Hadith about Muhammad's return from the "lesser Jihad" of battle to the "greater Jihad" of dail life is exposed as a "weak" Hadith not in either al-Bukhari or Muslim), and finally, the part which gets the least attention from Infidels but perhaps deserves the most, all of the violence and aggression that Muhammad's life is so full of (and this is true of what Muslims are taught about Muhammad, so his actual existence or not is irrelevant to how he is perceived and held up as a model).
Finally, it should be made clear that the Jihad against Israel is part of a larger world-view. Al-Arian may wish to destroy all of Israel (of course he does -- how could he not?) at once, while the "moderates" wish to do it in parts. But that is not enough to establish. For neither Qur'an, nor Hadith, nor Sira instructs or persuades Muslims to stop with the tiny sliver of land here and there -- Israel, say, or the Christian-held territories in the mountains of north Lebanon. It instructs them to keep going, spreading Islam, mainly by taking control of lands and, long before they are a majority, they may be able to impose the rule of Muslism and of Islam. And that is exactly what happened in Mesopotamia (populaed by Christians and Jews), and Syria (populated mainly by Christians), Sassanian Persia (populuated by Zoroastrians when the Muslim Arabs imposed their "gift" of Islam on an altogether more advanced civilization), Hindustan (with HIndus and Buddhists), and all the way, eventually, to the East Indies, where demographic conquest and Da'wa in the earliest days, including the setting up of military cities, accomplished more slowly what outright conquest had accomplished elsewhere).
That's "Jihad." It is all over the Muslim canonical texts. If Muslims will not admit it, either when caught in promoting or committing acts of terror, or just walking around in Leeds acting positively shocked, shocked that anyone in the "Muslim community" (but to be a "Muslim" is automatically to be in the "Muslim community" everywhere and anywhere -- if, that is, one is a True Beliver).
Al-Arian should be tried, convicted, as a traitor, and dealt with as traitors are. Loyalty to those who would enroll in Jihad, when the United States is fighting a war of self-defense against the Jihad, and attempting (not very articulately at the moment) to enroll others in that fight, is treason. And if this war needs better official definition, and a resolution by Congress that all who "support or engage in the Jihad" (go ahead -- deliberatley misunderstand Islam in the resolution itself, so as to get it passed, and then have Muslims in a quandary -- do they own up to the centrality of aggressive Jihad in Islam, or do they not? If they do, they will have ripped one more veil off the "faith," if they don't -- well, then their freedom of maneuver becomes a bit more constrained).are engaging in helping the enemey, are the enemy, then the word "treason" can be invoked more readily.
But this will require a decision. If someone is a citizen of this country, but works or hopes to work, or is taught devoutly to work, to create a system where everything in the political arrangements, including the Bill of Rights, the residing of legitimacy in the people (and not in "Allah"), and all the other assumptions of our polity that are flatly contradicted by Islam, and if that person further is taught to believe that his or her loyalty must lie only with Islam and the umma, never with the Infidel nation-state, then one has to ask: can such a person ever be considered a loyal citizen? And if not, then what? This is the question no one wishes to ask. No one wishes to hint at asking.
But it is not illegitimate. There is a system of belief. It teaches certain things. Those things, if believed, cause the believer to be opposed to the Infidel nation-state, and to owe not merely a higher or second loyalty to Islam, but sole loyalty to Islam. Many Muslims may not be real Believers. And it is in the extent of their absence of full belief in Islam, and precisely to that extent, that they may be, possibly, relied on, though the problem of distinguishing the taqiyya-kitman falsifiers from those who really are "Muslim-for-identification-purposes-only" Muslims remains.
And in that problem, the problem of weeding out those who are so lackadaisical, and indifferent in their Islam, that they can almost slough it off like a snake-skin, from the "vast and overwhelming" majority (to borrow Tony Blair's ringing adjectives) who cannot -- that is the problem that all non-Muslims, all over the world, now confront, or would, or should, if they had their wits about them.

BANGKOK - Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra assumed emergency powers on Friday after about 60 militants launched a dramatic attack on a town in the largely Muslim far south.
The powers, approved at an emergency cabinet meeting after two policemen were killed and 23 people wounded in Thursday night's attack on Yala, allow him to order phone taps, censor news reports and detain suspects without charge.

"This law will, of course, restrict people's rights and liberty," Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam told reporters.

The ACLU actually mobilized nationally against the Minuteman Project. The organization stationed its own volunteers on the border in order to watch the border monitors watch the illegal aliens, reporting any civil liberties violations to authorities.
This reporter has had a lifelong battle with the ACLU, which maintains that it is wholly nonpartisan, advertising itself as an objective organization – neither liberal nor conservative, Republican nor Democrat – that is devoted exclusively to protecting the civil liberties of all Americans.
But the facts indicate otherwise.
Roger Baldwin, founder and leading force in the ACLU until his death in 1981, asserted the partisan nature of the ACLU agenda. Said Baldwin, "I am for socialism, disarmament, and ultimately for abolishing the state itself as an instrument of violence and compulsion. I seek social ownership of property." And he concluded with "COMMUNISM IS THE GOAL."
So, what a bombshell when a member of the board of New Mexico's ACLU (the same organization that has mobilized nationally against the Minuteman Project) is discovered to be the head of the formation of a Minuteman group in New Mexico.
The president of the ACLU's southern district chapter says he doesn't know how the local board will respond to being suspended. "We are not 100 percent happy with it," he says. The ACLU would like Alford to resign, but believes it's up to the local board to seek his removal.
Roger Baldwin, how does the ACLU handle this one? As for the ACLU, is your destination unknown?

duh_swami has it right. When Al-Arian calls for jihad and says it is the way of blood, he means that it will take "blood, sweat, and tears", meaning that the spiritual quest is a difficult one. No, it is a purely innocent philosophical statement to be shouting from the pulpit with spittle and froth flying from his mouth.
But of course the lawyers would say that, it is their job. And after seeing the O.J. and Michael Jackson and Robert Blake trials, who knows, they just might find a jury dumb enough to go along with it. Luckily, we seem to be getting quite a few convictions on these terrorist trials so far (John Walker Lindh, Jose Padilla, Zacharias Moussaoui, Yaser Esam Hamdi), so maybe the jurists are smarter than I thought.
Let's see now, refresh my memory.... how many Jihads did Mohammed personally lead? How many more did he plan? How many thousands did he kill? Of course he meant "kill the infidels" in an abstract, philosophical way, like Hitler did when he said "kill the Jews"......
