AMSTERDAM — The national detective unit has uncovered a self-made bomb during the arrest of a 17-year-old youth in the Netherlands.The police carried out the operation at the home of suspect's parents in Amsterdam on Monday evening. The teen had come to police attention during the investigation in the Hofstadgroep.
The police stress the youth is not believed to be a member of the alleged terror group. Investigations are continuing to try and establish what contacts he had with the Hofstadgroep and what he intended to do with the bomb....
News agency ANP reported that his parents are of British and Dutch descent. The youth converted to Islam at the age of 14 and quickly became radicalised.
An initial examination of the device indicated it was "potentially dangerous", a police spokesperson said on Tuesday. It consisted of a cardboard bar filled with gunpowder, small bullets and a detonator.
Sources close to the investigation told ANP that intercepted telephone calls showed the youth seemed to have been out to get Independent right-wing MP Geert Wilders.
The MP also confirmed on Wednesday that the teen, who is the administrator of radical Islamic newsgroups, was suspected of threatening him via the internet.
Several young Muslim men are being prosecuted for alleged membership of the Hofstadgroep, which the authorities claim is a home-grown Muslim terror organisation.
Mohammed B., the man who killed filmmaker Theo van Gogh in November 2004, is said by prosecutors to have been an important member of the Hofstadgroep.

Frankly, nothing horrifies and disgusts me more than a Westerner who converts to Islam. And in this case it is clear that hatred and violence is exactly what this teen-ager was looking for.

Why haven't the papers been on to him for a quote? Maybe they have but he didn't tell them what they were hoping for about Islam being peaceful and how shocked he was etc
For a Westerner to pervert...I mean convert to islam, must mean that they lose the ability to think with their higher brain. It must be the animal part of the brain that drives them.

It provides -- frisson of excitement, brividi of pleasure -- a special Arab name you may take, and special dietary and clothing rules to make you Someone Special, and if you are 14, or 18, or a completely uninteresting 20 or 30 or 40 or 50, it may make you think, and others think, that you are More Interesting Than You Seem. It sets you apart. It dignigies your own marginalization, gives it a reason for being, and you for being eternally on the out. Islam is a vehicle of protest at this point: a howl against the entire world, or the Infidel world which is the only world you know.
And there are always plenty of people who are not quite right. Many of them have other ways to express, or take care of, or soothe, their not-quite-rightness. And now there is Islam, and that is the one way of expressing one's alienation and anommie and desire for a Total Regulation of Life and Total Explanation of the Universe that, for our own safety, we have to undercut, mock, monitor, and wherever possible limit. For once someone now becomes a Muslim, he (or she) becomes a threat. And we need to discourage, in all ways -- appeals to reason, appeals to filial piety, appeals to economic or social self-interest, -- the numbers of those who convert to Islam. They become our common danger, our permanent worry.
I see that a BBC report show one of the London bombers was 18 ,and the oldest was 25.

As a youngster and an avid reader, I read many of the classic medieval Arabic tales of fictional and based-on-reality Muslim super heroes who preformed incredible deeds that would make superman blush. Despite being an infidel child, I could see the romanticism aspect of such tales… Like a kid in the west putting on a cape and a mask while uttering catch phrases of the sort: have no fear… The masked avenger is here. Obviously, this other infidel kid did not grow up passed the “masked avenger” or in his case, the turbaned Mujahid phase.
Why should he anyway? He is a loser who would not have amounted to much passed collecting his state check and playing fantasy games. If he would have remained as just a frustrated infidel, he would have nothing except substance abuse like the rest of the lost generation of Dutch youth. The Netherlands, what a country!

Some years ago, a Montreal journalist named Josh Fried wrote an account of rescuing a friend named "Benjie" from a cult and what efforts they went through to "deprogram" him so they didn't have to concern themselves about him reverting to the cult. I can't remember what the cult was -- possibly the Moonies, who were, of course, devotees of a South Korean preacher, Sun Yong Moon, or perhaps the Hari Krishnas. The difference, I'll admit, was these cults exploited the labour of its thought-controlled inductees but never primed them to murder "unbelievers", but that's really what we are up against -- rescuing and deprograming vulnerable people.
