WASHINGTON: Canadian imams who gathered in a Toronto mosque on Thursday to denounce London bombings and distance themselves from extremism, refused to allow the woman president of a progressive Muslim organisation to enter the mosque through the front door.They insisted that Niaz Salimi, president of the Muslim Canadian Congress, enter through the side door reserved for women. According to Tarek Fatah, a Muslim writer, broadcaster and activist, the action demonstrated the “misogyny” that has become the “defining trait” of these leaders of the Islamic community.
Salimi said she was not allowed to enter the mosque which was the venue of the press conference held by the imams and had to use an entrance reserved for women. She said, “It may be too little and I hope it is not too late,” pointing out that conservative, even extremist, versions of Islam had been preached in Canadian mosques in recent years and many of the imams who signed the statement released at the press conference had “encouraged segregation, extremism, misogyny and homophobia on an unparalleled scale.” She said that to fight extremism, imams must not stop at the “mere condemnation of terrorism but demonstrate pluralism by turning mosques into community centres that are open to all members of the Muslim community, irrespective of their gender, ethnicity, sect, class, disability, or sexual orientation.” She noted that no women were invited to speak at the news conference.

So Salimi was surprised? This "segregation, extremism, misogyny and homophobia on an unparalleled scale" is something new in Islam?
It appears that Salimi used the side door, obeying as she'd been told to do, and then attended the press conference. This was the wrong course of action.
Since this was a press conference, presumably the press was there - she should have taken advantage of this presence and exposed the imams for what they are: misogynist, bigoted women-haters, etc., etc., you know the rest.
This was the real story at that press conference: the imams in action, not their recitation of rehearsed spiels for the benefit of the waiting reporters.
Why didn't Salimi take this golden opportunity to expose these dictators and their blatant discrimination? What is she afraid of?
And is barring someone from the main entrance to a building based on their sex legal in modern day Ontario? I think not. If this had been a black person, a Jew, a First Nations native, would Toronto tolerate this? No, because it's illegal. Then why do we tolerate the same actions directed against women?
Why doesn't the Ontario Human Rights Commission get involved in stopping this type of discrimination?
I understand that it's usual for Muslim women to enter a mosque through a side or rear entrance - this, I've been told, is not discriminatory, just different treatment of men and women. My answer to this was to ask why there could not be two front entrances? Still an unsatisfactory solution in my eyes, but far better than the hierarchical division of front (public, grand, and glorious) entrance for men, rear (hidden, for servants and deliveries) for women.
And to think that this can happen in the most multi-cultural city in the world - in the year 2005!
If I don't hear and read a public outcry about this (I live near Toronto), then I'm afraid too - afraid that our political correctness and tolerance won't withstand the affront of this fascism wrapped in the cloak of religion.

PRCS, You asked if women reporters had been asked to leave. I don't know about that incident, but here's another, a description from the Muslim Canadian Congress web site relating to 7/7 by Tarek Fatah:

A television crew, trying to get the reaction of Muslims to the London bombings, was confronted and jostled. It was ugly. The young woman reporter seemed shaken up. I had to intervene. The irony was that the reporter was a Muslim. As I argued with the men asking the woman reporter to leave, I could see Al-Qaida written all over the faces of these young zealots."
Note:asking the woman reporter to leave! And she was a Muslim!

Don't exalt Tarek Fatah as yet, the MCC website http://muslimcanadiancongress.org/ has a qualified condemnation of the London bombings and Salimi's rant about how it's the fault of George Bush.

What's truely beyond comprehension is that just 3 days after the London bombings the Canadian Governement met with a Muslim group that was on the list of banned Terrorist groups in Canada.

Different cultures have treated women shabbily in their past, but only in Islamic countries and in those countries that permit their Muslims to exercise their own personal law (India comes to mind), have such inhumane things like female genital mutilation, etc. occur with such regularity.
Islam started as being hostile to women. Of course, in the Arab culture of pre-Islamic Arabia, it did not seem that way at the time. Mohammed, the pedophile, married a 6 year old girl and screwed her at the age of 9 (imagine what would be the penalty for a 53 year old man for doing something like that where you live), women have to be accompanied by a male relative for any journey that takes them more than 24 hours away from their home, they are not allowed to show their faces to anyone other male than their father / brother / husband / son, a woman's testimony is half as valuable as a man's, a daughter's share in the inheritance is half of that of the son's, and the list goes on.
Islam is the most anti-female ideology (kind of fitting since it already has the distinction of being the most anti-human ideology) on this planet.

Well Jen, Canada is multicultural and that means that Canadians must be tolerant of all cultures and their traditions, practices, and cultural norms. God forbid that any Canadian make a moral judgment against the cultural mores of a particular cultural group! Moral judgments are verboten; all cultures are equal regardless of their peculiar, bizarre, or savage practices.
Moral/cultural/religious relativity reigns supreme. That's what multiculturalism is all about; didn't you know? Unmitigated tolerance is what makes it so beautiful; hate speech laws are what make it so natural. Everyone is equal, everyone is happy, everyone lives together in perfect harmony with no prejudice, jealousy, resentment, or conflict.
When people from every conceivable culture are encouraged to retain their unique identities in a foreign land that has no official culture, chaos is inevitable. It will be so funny if the first major cultural clashes to ensue in Canada are between "progressive" and "traditional" muslims.
Imagine a Christian church doing this to women. Imagine the outrage, the protests, the lawsuits. The church would be forced to change by both court and gov to change their ways.
Of course this is a mosque not a church. That means things are... well.. you know.. different.
You don't have to imagine too hard, Boogey_Man, to know what would happen if a Christian church had the same policy. You and I, and all of us, know what the answer to that one is. Actually, there is some evidence (from Hadiths but I don't have the specific ones) that Mohammed had a fetish for girls who show the first signs of menstrual bleeding, which I think in many cases can be as young as age 9 ("A girl can begin menstruating anytime between the ages of 8 and 16." http://www.4woman.gov/faq/menstru.htm#6).
So Aisha may have shown menstrual bleeding at 9, and Mohammed couldn't help himself.
