NETANYA, Israel (AP) — A teenage Palestinian suicide bomber killed three Israelis and wounded at least 30 others in front of a crowded shopping mall in this seaside city, the first such attack in nearly five months and a blow to a truce that has revived peace hopes.... Among the wounded was a 6-year-old girl who was badly burned, Israel TV reported. Two women were killed instantly, and a third died several hours later of her wounds, according to Israel Radio.Israel blamed the militant Islamic Jihad, which has continued its attacks against Israelis despite a truce declared in February, and police linked the explosion to a failed car bomb attack a few minutes earlier in the West Bank.
Israeli police and Palestinian security identified the bomber as Ahmed Abu Khalil, an 18-year-old member of Islamic Jihad from the West Bank village of Atil, about eight miles east of Netanya.
Police said the two dead Israelis were women. Doron Shafir, one of the first paramedics at the scene, said he saw a woman whose clothes were on fire. "Another, her handbag was burning. We stepped on it to put it out. She was just sitting there. She did not know what was happening to her," he said.
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon did not comment after the bombing. David Baker, an official in Sharon's office, said the Palestinian Authority was not doing enough to rein in militants.
It was unlikely the truce would collapse, however. Both sides have an interest in not walking away from their agreement. Sharon needs to maintain calm to carry out his Gaza withdrawal this summer, and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas' political survival depends on maintaining the cease-fire, seen as key to easing harsh Israeli restrictions in the Palestinian areas....
Abbas used unusually strong language in denouncing the bombing.
"We condemn this terrorist attack. It's a crime against the Palestinian people," he said. "Those traitors are working against the Palestinian interest. There is no rational man who can do those things on the eve of the Israeli withdrawal from 22 settlements," referring to Israel's planned pullout from Gaza and part of the West Bank.
Right. They're getting what they want peacefully; why bother with suicide bombings?
This is what Abas actually meant:
"We condemn [the timing of] this terrorist attack. It's a crime against the Palestinian people," he said. "Those traitors [the Jews] are working against the Palestinian interest. There is no rational [non-muslim] man who can do those things on the eve of the Israeli withdrawal from 22 settlements,"

Maybe that's because they don't want land, or peace. They want the destructiuon of the State of Israel. Giving away Jewish land is one step toward that, suicide bombings are another.
So what is the plan after Gaza is evacuated? It is almost certain that either a more powerful rocket will be shot into Israel from Gaza, or a suicide bombing traced back to Gaza occurs shortly after the gates are closed and padlocked. How does Israel respond? Let's say it is a rocked and it kills a 100 Israelis. Should Israel launch a rocket and kill 10,000 Gazans to make a point? What do you think the first postGaza terrorist attack will be and what Israel's retaliation will be?

WHAT WE SHOULD EXPECT FROM MUSLIMS

Western Muslims feel badly misunderstood. The vast majority of them utterly abhor terrorism against the countries in which they live. And yet they sense suspicion from their fellow citizens.
Meanwhile, those fellow citizens are feeling increasing frustration with their Muslim neighbours. Since 9/11, security forces have foiled some 40 major plots against Western nations. Many if not most of those plots have been the work of local Muslims. Hundreds of European Muslims have journeyed to join the insurgents in Iraq. Extremist preachers exploit the freedom of Western societies to incite terrorism against them.
Moderate Western Muslims -- and careful politicians -- prefer not to acknowledge this reality. But euphemism is breeding resentment on all sides. We'd all benefit from speaking clearly. Let us be explicit about what we expect from Muslim communities:
- Acknowledge Reality; accept Responsibility. Obviously it would be unjust to blame the religion of Islam for terrorism. But equally obviously, terrorism is a problem within Islam, and Islamic communities bear a special obligation to uproot it.
Yet how many times have you heard an Islamic leader in a Western country urge Muslims to take action against the extremists in their midst? Or unequivocally repudiate violent jihad? Or condemn by name those who lead young Western Muslims astray?
- Isolate and Exclude Extremists. Too often, even the most moderate Western imams excuse and condone extremism.

- Co-operate actively with police and security services. After the 9/11 attacks, one U.S. Islamic organization distributed a pamphlet called Know Your Rights, explaining to American Muslims that they had no obligation to answer questions from the police. From a legal point of view, that is of course correct. But one would have imagined that patriotic Muslims would want to tell the police anything that might help protect the country against future attack and bring the guilty to justice.

For all the grief America is suffering over Guantanamo Bay, U.S. soldiers there might as well have flushed 1,001 Korans down 1,001 toilets — live on Al-Jazeera TV. Newsweek's May 15 retraction of its false and deadly Koran-in-the-can story has worked as well as a severed brake line in slowing calls by Democrats (and some wobbly Republicans) to padlock the terrorist detention facility. Illinois's Dick Durbin, the U.S. Senate's No. 2 Democrat, infamously compared Gitmo to the Soviet Gulag, Nazi concentration camps, and the Khmer Rouge's killing fields, despite the base's paucity of firing squads, gas chambers, or neatly stacked human skulls. After a week of brickbats, Durbin tearfully offered a qualified apology for his remarks.

June 1, 2005: A suicide bomber blasted the funeral of Mullah Abdul Fayaz, a moderate cleric, at his eponymous mosque in Kandahar, Afghanistan. He killed Kabul's police chief and 20 others, while wounding 50.
"The attacker was a member of al-Qaeda. We have found documents on his body that show he was an Arab," Kandahar governor Gul Agha Sherzai told the AP's Noor Khan. "We had an intelligence report that Arab al-Qaeda teams had entered Afghanistan and had been planning terrorist attacks."
January 20, 2005: A suicide bomber exploded inside the Ghocha Park Mosque in Sheberghan, injuring 21, six reportedly in critical condition.
January 16, 2005: An anti-personnel mine went off at the Sal Metra mosque in Urozgan province, wounding two worshippers.
June 30, 2003: An earlier bombing at Fayaz's mosque injured 16.
"Mullah Fayaz said the Taliban were not following Islam and that their interpretation of Islam was wrong," Kandahar police chief Mohammed Akram told reporters. "This is the . . . reason they probably attacked Mullah Fayaz's mosque."
To date, colleagues of the Gitmo Boys have killed 21 and wounded 89 in Afghan mosque bombings.
Iraq's picture is even bloodier:
May 23, 2005: A car bomb at a Baghdad mosque killed two and wounded 22, including 11 children.
May 19, 2005: A bomb at a Saydiya mosque killed two and hurt five.
April 22, 2005: A car bomb at a Baghdad mosque disrupted Friday prayers, killing nine and wounding 26.
March 10, 2005: A suicide bomber detonated himself during a funeral at a Mosul mosque, murdering 47 people and injuring at least 101.
February 18, 2005: On Ashoura, Shiites' holiest day, homicide bombers attacked two Baghdad mosques, killing 25 and wounding 30.
February 18, 2005: A car bomb killed eight and hurt 10 at an Iskandariyah mosque.
August 26, 2004: Mortar shells pummeled a Najaf mosque, leaving 27 dead and 63 injured.
March 2, 2004: Homicide bombers, mortars, and hidden explosives at mosques in Baghdad and Karbala killed 181 and wounded 573 Ashoura worshippers.
August 29, 2003: A car bomb outside a Najaf mosque killed 85 and injured 140.
Add the 386 killed and 970 injured in Iraq to the Afghan figures above: The terrorist pals of Guantanamo's al-Qaeda and Taliban residents have butchered 407 Muslims and injured 1,059 more in these mosque attacks alone.
After crying for these murdered and maimed Muslims, weep for the Korans destroyed in this mayhem.

From what I understand Israel wanted to liberate Gaza in order to free up more soldiers which were protecting a small number of people and - I'm guessing here - to have more freedom in counter-terrorism operations. I think they're well aware that terrorism will continue neverthelless.
The surrender of the Jewish villages in Gaza, which lies athwart the traditional invasion route from the south, will hearten Muslims bent on Jihad everywhere. Sharon may have been a brave soldier, but what he is so obstinately doing damages Israel far more than any good he did it in his entire career.
And though the rest of the Infidel world chooses to believe that this Israeli surrender will cause Muslims to relax their demands elsewhere, they have it exactly backwards. Israel, and all other Infidel countries, will because of this folly face even greater threats than before. For the Israeli retreat will boost morale of those conducting Jihads elsewhere, from Beslan to London to Washington, D. C. They, who keep claiming, with no evidence, that Islam is "the world's fastest-growing religion" (this statement, while untrue, is very important for their "self-esteem" or amour-propre), will be thrilled at the site of those houses of Jewish villagers being destroyed, and the land being seized by delirious crowds of Arabs (the real reason the homes are being destroyed and not turned over to the Arabs is because the spectacle of Arab hysteria would, paradoxically, both fill the Israelis with pain, and at the same time offer a view of the "Palestinian" Arabs that they do not wish the non-Muslim world to see. For today Gaza, tomorrow the West Bank. And the day after that, the rest of Israel. And al-Andaluz. And France. And Italy. And Germany.
For the Qur'an, Hadith, and Sira do not say "spread Islam and Muslim rule" so that it dominates in the Middle East. No, they say something different, which leads Muslims to believe that Islam must rule everywhere, all across the globe. And many of the act on that belief, and even more are firm supportres of those who act on that belief. It is a nightmare situation, still so imperfectly understood.
Look...
Israel is a sovereign Nation.
Israel has democratically elected leaders.
Israel has a powerful, modern military.
Israel has more than enough capability to deal with genocidal, arab, muslim, Jew-killing terrorists.
But guess what?
They CHOOSE NOT to retaliate.

Next, we get to deal with the problem of a "viable" state for those bastards. The word "viable" is a diplomatic code-word for a single, connected, Palestinian state, as opposed to a two-part state. So, we're going to hear a lot about a corridor, a strip, a joining, or some other such plan to UNITE gaza with the West Bank. That's what VIABLE means. Listen for that.
It will happen. All the big cheezes (Bush, Blair, etc.) talk about a "viable" state.
In the meantime, the religion of peace and tolerance strikes again.

It is illegal, the act of a single obstinate man who has lost his mind, who became convinced a while back that "Europe" would not let Israel retain certain territories (oh, really -- has he looked at what has happened in "Europe" in the votes against the EU, and in the bombs in London? Is he quite so sure about this future "pressure" from a collapsing, and correctly fearful but confused "Europe"? It ignores the warnings of the most convincing of the former intellignence chiefs, and the generals. It substitutes wishes and dreams for unpleasant reality. It appears to accept the idea that "if we Israelis do this" then "those 'Palestinians' will do that" -- but there is no end to the Arab Jihad against Israel.
There is no end, but that does not mean despair must follow. You hold tight. The Americans did it with the gigantic land-mass of the Soviet Union, a ruthless and disciplined enemy. It did so despite the fantastic appeal, all over the world, of Communist propaganda. It did so despite the loss of all of China to Communism. And do you know what finally happened? The Communists themselves in the Soviet Union, or enough of them to count, realized their own system had failed -- failed them.
Well, many Muslims will cling to Islam. But more and more of the non-Arab Muslims (especially in Iran) may find that they notice, more and more, and resent, more and more, the Arab supremacist ideology that is carried within Islam. And more and more Muslims may find that they do not wish to be sullied by the Arab or Arab-financed or Arab-centered behavior that makes Muslims all over the Infidel world, increasingly cause for suspicion and hostility -- entirely justified, by the way.
And then there are the "Muslims-for-identification-purposes-only" Muslims. These are thos born into Islam. They have no real use for it, except as a career move -- it helps to be a "moderate Muslim" to get ahead in the West rather than a flat out, honest ex-Muslim (just ask Fareed Zakaria, and compare his career, and what he must take in, with that lone wolf, the scholar and quiet wit Ibn Warraq, or the battling and embattled Ali Sina).
All those who, out of fear, embarrassment, or filial piety cannot bring themselves to distance themselves openly from Islam, or who cannot allow themselves to realize that the exaggerated claims made for "Islamic civlization" (and for the "Arabs" within that civilization, when virtually all of the important cultural contributions, translations and suchlike, were made by Christians and Jews and Persians and Turks and Central Asians -- from Al-Farabi and Avicenna to the translators in Cordoba and Baghdad to the astronomers at that Persian observatory that the hysterical George Saliba likes to claim as part of "Arabic science"), should think again.
Kanan Makiya, you claim to be an "atheist" and yet a "Muslim" who immediately begins to reminiscence about your pious grandmother, and you don't like attacks on Islam. Get over it. Fouad Ajami, mister "we Arabs sat in Beirut cafes in those days, entranced with the voice we heard coming out of Cairo..." -- well, this shtick can only take you so far. You are remarkably silent about Islam. Turns out, that military action was one of the most fruitful of the century. To this day, there is still condemnation for that action, certainly not a 'bravo, good show guys' from the "international community" for saving their hairy asses.
Hugh, I think it's unfair to put all this on Sharon's shoulders. Europe hasn't fallen, it is only caving slightly thanks to the likes of the UK. Israel could very well be wiped off the map (well, the ones that recognize her) before the EU settles at some point on the scale. We can't wait for the natural process of that entity to decline and/or come to Israel's aid. The UK won't stand for it and she holds the Ace, IMO.
I am not putting everything on Sharon's shoulders. But he is behaving like a tyrant, refusing to hold a referendum. And he is obstinate, and unable to consider what Islam is all about. He never knew, he knew only that "the Arabs" wanted to kill "the Jews" and he would defend "the Jews." He may or may not have understood just how dangerous it was for Israel to permit the invention of that "Palestinian people" who suddenly replaced, in the world's press, the truer word "Arabs" or "Muslim Arabs" or "Muslim Arabs with a handful of islamochristians whose identification with Uruba, Arab-ness, the Arab-nation, caused them to identify with Islam as well.
But Sharon does not know now, and never did know, about Islam. He still thinks there is a "solution." There is no "solution." There is only Darura -- the overwhelming pwoer, the power to punish overwhelmingly, any Muslim state or people should they try something. The Israelis have held back for their entire history. They now possess nuclear weapons. A demonstration drop, in the Sinai or somewhere else, perhaps should be in the offing. What could trigger it? How many casualties? It should have to be a thousand, or 500, or even 200. It need not be a single event. But Darura -- the same "necessity" that is causing British Muslims, for the moment, to lie through their teeth about what Islam teaches, and to pretend they had "no idea" such things could happen -- Jihad is not tangential, but central to Islam, and every single major Muslim commentator, compiler of tafsir or collector and winnower of hadith, or a historiographer (Ibn Khaldun) or a theologian (al-Ghazzalli) has written on the duty of Jihad.
I don't blame Sharon; he knows not what he does. I blame the entire atmosphere, for putting the poor Israelis into a state of such demoralization and confusion that, save for a few of the clear-headed, many are refusing to see how irrelevant this Gaza pullout will be to preventinig major war -- that it will in fact hearten all those who wish Israel ill, many but not all of whom are Muslims.
