How Visa System Failed to Flag Lodi Imam

SACRAMENTO — As Shabbir Ahmed sits in the county jail on immigration charges connected to an FBI terrorism investigation, federal officials are at a loss to explain how a man who publicly demonstrated his rage against the United States and advocated violence against the U.S.-backed regime in Pakistan could slip so easily through the State Department visa system.

In October 2001, after U.S. military aircraft began bombing Al Qaeda bases and Taliban strongholds in Afghanistan, Ahmed — then a 35-year-old imam of a small mosque in Islamabad — was one of the main speakers at an anti-U.S. demonstration at a market near the U.S. Embassy in the Pakistani capital.

While demonstrators burned American flags and effigies of President Bush, Pakistan Press International news service reported that the slight, bearded Muslim cleric exhorted the crowd to join a jihad, or holy war, against the United States.

A month later at another rally, the Boston Globe quoted Ahmed as calling for a rebellion against Pakistan's president, U.S. ally Gen. Pervez Musharraf: "Whoever is against Islam," said Ahmed, "we will destroy him. If this is rebellion, we are not afraid of rebellion. Blood is going to be spilled in Pakistan."

These events were widely reported by Pakistani and foreign media. But a short time later, probably in January 2002, Ahmed walked into the consular section of the heavily fortified U.S. Embassy compound, where he was granted an uncontested three-year "religious worker" visa to the United States.

He arrived in San Francisco on Jan. 23, 2002, and immediately assumed a position as imam of a Lodi, Calif., mosque that is the center of religious life for that San Joaquin Valley city's large Pakistani American immigrant community. Since then he has made at least two trips back to his native Pakistan.

At an immigration hearing June 24 in San Francisco, Ahmed admitted making the anti-American speeches but said he had since completely changed his opinion about the United States, which he said he now loves and respects.

"He now regrets that he made those statements," said his attorney, Saad Ahmad.

But federal prosecutors, who allege links between Ahmed and Pakistan's banned Harkat-ul-Moujahedeen political party, are not convinced. They have asked Immigration Judge Anthony Murry to deny bail to Ahmed pending a deportation hearing later this year.

After reading reports about the Islamabad speeches, the leadership of the Lodi mosque where Ahmed worked fired him at a special meeting June 26. "We don't want that kind of person who has spoken against the United States," mosque President Mohammed Shoaib told Associated Press.

The man who sponsored Ahmed for the Lodi job — former Imam Mohammad Adil Khan — is also jailed without bond on immigration charges, as is Khan's 22-year-old son, Mohammad Hassan Adil.

All three men came into the country on R-1 or R-2 religious worker visas. R-2 visas are for spouses and children of R-1 visa holders.

How Ahmed's public pronouncements against the United States went unnoticed remains an unanswered question.

What in god's name is this "religious worker" visa, and why is such a category uncontested when, for Islam, the "religious worker" is equivalent to the Communist infiltrator in charge of forming cells of those ready to do the work of Comrade Stalin.

Who is running the INS? And why does one keep discovering new arrivals with hijabs hither and yon? And what Congressmen will begin to represent the great majority of people who, were a referendum to be held, would eagerly support a complee ban on all Muslim immigration to this country. No matter how The New Duranty Times were to thunder against it.

We need to find out more about who works in those embassies and consulates. Are locals, or American citizens who once were locals, doing the deciding? Are they doing the guiding, or the coaching, of those locals -- whether out of greed, for bribes, or out of far more sinister motives? Who is responsible not merely for this case, but the continued arrival of Muslims from such places as Syria, and as one Armenian from Haleb told me, shaking his head, these are the "really bad" Muslims too (by which he meant, neither the pseudo-Muslim Alawites, nor the well-off and secularised Sunnis, but the Muslim Brotherhood boys. What is going on?

And let some heads roll, figuratively, in the INS, pour encourager les autres, and so that fewer heads will roll the other -- you know --way.

Simply amazing how the worst Islamics skate right through our system. Washington Post had a heartening article, appears that many of these Allah driven pests are being deported on immigration charges because they are much easier to make stick. Yes indeed, tears come to me eyes as the world's smallest violin warbles out a shaky tune.

It's a free pass into the USA for foreign born Muslims with foreign (Saudi funded) ideologies who want to make sure the American flock doesn't stray from the "true Islam"

All true Hugh. But some of these religious workers visa holders are absolutely harmless such as the Tibetan Buddhists who have found a home at the Harvard Divinity school.

Who is running the INS?

Political appointees and lard ass blockheads who are putting in their 20 years for that big fat Federal pension down the road. Same as the rest of the Federal mess in DC and emanating out of DC.

The problem is certainly not limited to the mosque at Lodi.
According to the Washington Post, the Falls Church Mosque, just a few scant miles from Washington, D.C., has a new imam.

"Dar Al Hijrah in Falls Church is closely affiliated with the Muslim American Society, a 13-year-old organization that promotes Islam. The society has been linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, considered the world's largest and most influential Islamic movement, which advocates a purer, more restrictive form of Islam and greater reliance on Islamic law. The Egyptian-based Brotherhood generally renounces violence but endorses resistance to 'occupation' by such groups as the Islamic Resistance Movement, or Hamas. Hamas has conducted a campaign of suicide bombing against Israelis."

The Post article further states that the new imam
"supports what he described as the movement's [Hamas's] moderation and its denunciations of violence."

Religious visas? Isn't Wahhabism considered to be a religion?

Like it or not, it's time to disallow all immigration from the Middle East.

This isn't rocket science. It appears that the INS doesn't process information as we do nor do they seem to have a handle on what constitutes danger. Surely their bureaucratic culture has blinded them as they have to worry about that is and isn't legal or politically correct. Rather than screening entrants properly, this agency is being manipulated and can no longer be counted on to protect us by keeping out those that will do us harm.

And...these are the ones that enter LEGALLY. Many millions have slipped over the borders. How many of them are ready to do us harm?

About ten years ago I was in the military stationed in Seoul Korea and needed to get a passport. My boss took me down to the US Embassy is Seoul. Since I was American I was able to use the "back door" and cut the line. You wouldn't believe the amount of people lined up to recieve any number of visas to enter the US, it's really kind of scary. Of course I received the evil eye as I cut the line.

Most of the people who are issuing these visas are local nationals and bribery is a normal part of the process. Escpecially in South Korea a bribe is almost considered necessary - it's not looked at as a bad thing. So if you got the money - someone's going to look the other way. No doubt this is standard working order in ME countries.

Australia has a "religious worker" category of visa too. It's a 2-year visa and you have to have a sponsor here. Sounds very similar to what the US has. I wonder how many of these hate-filled creeps we're letting in, under the innocent guise of "religious worker". You picture some pious, mild-mannered religious type, and instead get somebody poisoning the minds of citizens against our own countries. Somehow I doubt we're getting "moderate" Muslim imams. Somehow I think we're all ending up with the filthy dregs of Wahabbism.

I talked to some Mormon missionaries who came to my door once, and they said they were on religious worker visas. So the quandary is, you can't say no to Islamic "religious workers" without saying no to the lot of them. That's how they use and abuse our systems to infiltrate our countries with their vitriolic imams. We set up systems to be egalitarian, and end up shooting ourselves in the foot when Islam uses these systems.

But Islam is not only, or even mainly, a "religion" but rather an entire geopolitics. Does that not matter -- or can it not be made to matter?

There is hope yet.

I regulalry read Pakistani and B'deshi newspaper editorials and op-ed sections. From what I remember, about 2-3 months back, a rabid mullah Paki parliamentarian, travelling to the EU on some conference, was denied entry into Brussels after landing in Germany despite having a valid visa coz Belgium had his name on a restricted entry list. Why? Because the man's many rabid speeches inciting hatred against jews and gays, to the faithful from mosque pulpits, was being monitored by some agency some where which did its duty and marked this scumbag as persona non grata. Seems , someone somewhere is doing their job.

Also, the US denied visa to N Modi, chief minister of India's Gujrat state for "failing to stem" anti-moslem rioting in his state in 2002.

The federal government, and in particular its "intelligence" agencies, is completely incompetent in fighting terrorism, protecting citizens, and removing the threat from within.

Anyone remember 9/11?
