The more that jihadists (and all Muslims) think that terror works, the more terror we will see. From The World Tribune, with thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist:
RAMALLAH — Most Palestinians think the Islamic insurgency forced Israel's decision to unilaterally withdraw from the Gaza Strip, according to a new poll. The survey reported that a majority of Palestinians credit strikes by Hamas and Islamic Jihad for the decision by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and northern West Bank and evict their 10,000 Jewish residents. The poll also found, however, that only 40 percent of those surveyed want the attacks to continue.
The study was conducted by the Center for Opinion Polls and Survey Studies, based in An Najah University in Nablus.Forty percent of respondents agreed that "pressure caused by Palestinian resistance" led to the Israeli withdrawal decision. Another 34 percent said Israel regarded its presence in the Gaza Strip as a "security and economic inexpediency."
Twenty-two percent of respondents did not cite the Palestinian war as a reason for the Israeli withdrawal. Instead, they said the pullout decision stemmed from international pressure on Israel.
Lebanon came first. It was the unilateral retreat from Lebanon that sparked the Al-Aqsa Intifadah a few months later (Sharon's visit to the Temple Mount was just a pretext). Time and again, the terrorists are shown that their crime does pay. That's the major reason why the West's appeasing measures are its undoing.
"Mar'ivo savea', masbi'o ra'ev" - when you starve it it is sated, when you sate it it is hungry. It wasn't about terrorists that the Talmudic Sages said that, but the description is spot on.
Gaza deserves a good bombing if they do a major attack on Israel. They're just begging for it. Please SuperIdiotDhimmi Rice, sit down and shut up and don't go buzzing off to Israel to praise the Palestinians and criticize Israel.
"...only 40 percent of those surveyed want the attacks to continue."
Only? To me, 40% of the population wanting to continue murdering unarmed civilians on buses or in pizzerias seems kind of high. But I guess in the context of the bloodthirsty Islamic world, 40% is admirable.
I'd say the "Palestinians" have not learned from their mistakes yet.
Quite true: reward terror and you’ll get more of it. Michael Zaretski, above, is right about the withdrawal from Lebanon – a point Daniel Pipes has made often. And Pipes was quick to criticize Sharon’s withdrawal policy on the very same grounds. Appeasement only emboldens them – even if the motivation is otherwise and the appeasement is only apparent. Such a perception is deadly.
Our leaders have learned so little after all this time.
This offers one more reason why Sharon has behaved unforgivably. A brave soldier, but a stupid and obstinate man, Sharon had an idea. Now that idea has him. He thought, a year or two ago, that pressure from the E.U., and then from others, would be brought to bear on Israel and that pressure would become intolerable. Well, he would fool them all. He would unilaterally withdraw from the last tiny remaining bits of Gaza -- that handful of Jewish villages, some of which long predate, by decades, the founding of the state of Israel. And in so doing, he would leave Gaza to its own devices, and perhaps win time, so he thought, for Israel in the West Bank.
Monstrously fat, pathetic, unable to be flexible in any way, he has kept his own counsel and his own course. He is standing at the wheel, refusing to listen to the most thoughtful among his generals and intelligence chiefs. Oh, he'll show them. And the "Palestinians" -- why, he won't ask a thing of them, because they are not capable of giving a thing. He'll show them -- he'll get out of Gaza altogether.
Of course the world changed, between the time that Sharon had his Big Idea and the time for its execution. Bombs went off in Madrid, in Beslan, in London. A man was killed in Amsterdam. Two countries -- France and then Holland -- voted against the E.U. constitution, and hence against the E.U. It became clear that Turkey would not be admitted to the E.U., not now, not in ten years, never. It became clear that the "democracy" project in Iraq was ill-conceived, and missed the real point: the need to weaken, divide, demoralize the forces of Islam, the forces of Jihad. A new Pope who knows about Islam, however veiled at times he may be, now sits in the Holy See.
But Sharon has refused to take any of this in. Or perhaps he has not been capable of it, to realize that all the assumptions on which his original policy was based have been kicked over.
Meanwhile the American government, which might have tried to stop him, might have tried to see that it is important, if Arab assaults on Israel are to cease, to make sure not merely that Israel can defend itself, but that it is so overwhelmingly and obviously powerful, in every respect, and that when Arabs look at a map, they see defensible borders, not ever-shrinking borders which simply swells their hearts with a sense of inevitable Muslim triumph.
And there is something else. A Muslim victory, or a perceived victory (they are the same thing) anywhere in the world, will encourage Muslims everywhere to pursue the Jihad. A Muslim defeat anywhere, at the hands of anyone, will demoralize Muslims everywhere. The Western world has not yet begun to study the psychology of Muslims. Andre Servier's "The Psychology of the Musulmanes" which was last printed in 1923, but for all of its faults remains an acute study, and one that would usefully serve as a supplement to Patai's "The Arab Mind" -- for the Arab Mind, as Patai sees it, is formed almost entirely by Islam, or in relation to Islam.
It is a pity that Sharon is in power, a pity that the others in his Cabinet are weak or fearful, a pity that the Israeli media suffers, like the French media, from the pensee unique that is, roughly, the line of Israel's politically innocent novelists and all those who are so quick to forget Israel's overwhelming case, and have never bothered, themselves, to learn about Islam. Understandable, of course -- who wants to find out, or to accept, the notion that the war against Israel has no end? But better to find that out now, than after still another ill-timed, unnecessary, and dangerous retreat.
If the Americans have their wits about them, they will try to undo the damage from Rice's hectoring visit of last week, and to cease prating about the "need" to create a corridor, through Israel, so that those wishing to destroy Israel who live in Gaza can more easily travel to visit those who wish to destroy Israel who live in the West Bank. It should not be beyond the wit of the more intelligent to publicly praise Israel for this tremendous "sacrifcie it made, a sacrifice that was entirely its own idea, that it was under no obligation to make" and so on. It all happens to be true. But it needs to be repeatedly emphasized, not least for the sake of those Muslims who are so ready to crow -- in Gaza, and when we leave Iraq (as we should, for far better reasons than Sharon has been able to produce), in that country.
Let both withdrawals be interpreted as ways to let the locals stew in their own juices, without being rescued by Infidel concern, Infidel money, Infidel "construction" or "reconstruction." If there is civil war in Gaza, fine. If there is civil war in Iraq, fine. The Infidels can only benefit. No need to lift a finger. Just don't lift a finger to prevent it. That's all that is needed. The spectacle of chaos and violence in Gaza, brought about entirely by the corruption and violence endemic in "Palestinian" existence, should be permitted to go on -- the "Palestinians" are now ready for their close-up, Mr. DeMille. Don't put any makeup on them. Let's see them plain, as they really are.
It seems that the US wants an "accounting" for its $50 million jizya to the Palestinians. What an outrageous dhimmi demand!
http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/856FA657-137F-4A88-9916-E5C7CE82BCDE.htm
"An infusion of US cash to show confidence in Palestinian self-government is coming with strings attached: That they keep it in a separate bank account to make tracking easier, officials say."
Rice wants to give them MORE money. Dhimmi, sit down and shut up.
Why do they always describe Gaza as 'one of the most overcrowded places on earth?'
This is not true. No way. Hong Kong, Tokyo, hundreds of places are more overcrowded. It is one of all too many examples of where a lie becomes truth and attached to some entity, e.g. Islam = religion of peace, jihad = inner struggle.
Let the Gazans kill each other and Dhimmi Rice, sit down and shut up.
Hugh, that was a very prescient post about how Sharon has taken Israel to where it is today vis a vis Gaza. His stubborness may have been an asset in battle, but not in this chess game.
sharon is a Judenrat's Judenrat.
How many hundreds of Jews died as he allowed genocidal arab muslim terrorists to act at will?
How many thousands of rockets did he allow to land in Israel while doing nothing?
How many Freedoms were lost as he imposed fascist rule on Israel?
How many Jews will he kill in order to hand Eretz Yisrael to muslim assassin pigs as a reward for years of Jew-killing?
And yes, this will be a HUGE victory for the satanic cult of death, which WILL result in more death for Jews and everyone else the world over.
As the (W)ahabbster has spearheaded this great Evil, the US will pay a price of Biblical portions. That's where the satanic cult of death's nukes come in.
Looking at the situation tactically. with the Jews now pulled out of Gaza, it is 100% Muslim/Arab.
It is totally fenced off and surrounded with the Mediterranean on one side and the Israelis control the water, electricity and entry and exit points.
After the evacuation there will be no Israeli's living inside Gaza, and those 5,000 Israeli's inside Gaza are actually security threats and potential hostages to the Palestinians.
I suggest that the only reason that they haven't been used before as hostages and political tools by the PA and Hamas, is because the Jews living in Gaza actually provided jobs and economic benefit for 3,000 Palestinians, now those jobs and income will be gone, and as soon to be laid off Palestinian said, when asked what he would do, he shrugged and said "it is in the hands of Allah" which means his butt is wiped.
There are no jobs, no industry, no income to be earned in Gaza other than in construction and Palestinian Police.
Sharon has screwed the Palestinians by giving them what they want, those 3,000 jobs produced income that benefitted others (there is a multiplier effect with money). 1 Dollar or Shekel of income goes around, benefiting more until taxation (if there is any) wipes it out of existence.
In the future when the Arabs start or cause mischief in Gaza, launch rockets or suicide bombers, all Sharon has to do is close the gates, shut off electricity and water, without worrying about the effect it will have on the Jews.
And Arab fecundity being what it is, with rampant reproduction, and the ability to breed like rats, within 10 years the very fences surrounding Gaza will be bulging from population overload and the only place for them to go is into the sea.
I think that Sharon's move was prescient and tactically smart.
The Palestinians had two choices. The first and most intelligent was a choice to peaceably coexist with their infidel neighbor.
That choice was forsaken to accomodate their "no choice second" decision to side with their muslim brethren to the East.
Palestine has accepted their frontline role as jihadists seeking the infidel free lands of holy Islam.
It is possible that Palestine will achieve statehood. After that though, when the first homicide bomber hits the Islamocognitive Israel, it will be time for that non muslim entity to utterly and completely destroy Gaza and the West Bank as aggressors of war.
Is Palestine ready?
"It seems that the US wants an "accounting" for its $50 million jizya to the Palestinians. What an outrageous dhimmi demand!"
Outrageous, indeed. Dhimmi Rice is learning, but too slowly, that we should be grateful to pay the jizya in exchange for the promise to kill ONLY 4 million of us (including 2 million children). By asking for an accounting ... well, who knows how many they'll choose to kill. The Europeans know dhimmitude is supposed to work ... 9 billion with no strings attached. In exchange, maybe only a few more train bombings, but no nuclear.
My biggest worry is that too many Israelis now seem to be willing to pay the jizya, too, and that is simply NOT something they cannot afford to do. They have survived 56 years under seige, from arabs, from ME Christians (with the exception of the brave and honorable Coptics), from Europe, and from every gutless appeaser and arabist ever shat out from the arse of satan. If the Israeli's lose their resolve now, it could mean the beginning of the end to civilization.
Sorry, I meant paying the jizya is NOT something they can afford to do
They should have done a push-in, not a pull-out. Israel should have lined up their bulldozers blade to blade and pushed the whole rotten Gaza mess into the Mediterranean!

When I was in undergraduate school in Boston back in the late 1950's-yes there was life in the last century, there was a Harvard mathematician and folk singer by the name of Tom Lehrer who had cynical views in music and lyrics during the benighted Eisenhower era. One of his especially delicious barbs was directed at the then Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. It went something like this: "There's rioting in Africa, dum dum de dum, there's starving in Spain dum dum de dum, but we don't mind it very much, dum dum de dum, because things are the same. But we can be thankful and tranquil and proud because we have been endowed with a mushroom shaped cloud. We can be certain that some sunny day someone will push the button and we will all be blown away."
Ten foot tall Ivans with the bomb technology stolen from Los Alamos by crypto German Communist and British citizen scientist Klaus Fuchs assured killer Joe Stalin of his nuclear devices were in vogue back then as threats to the "free world."
Fast forward to the new century and the Panglossian views of Dr. Rice strike an errily familar sendup to those classic Tom Lehrer lyrics, except it's the Islamic jihadis who have the "bomb" whether conventional, CBW or, shudder, nuc.
Dream on Dr. Rice, there's a world war going on out there and the Arab and other Muslim jihadis are at the core of it: terror bombings and murders of innocents in Israel, London, Sharm el Shaik. So despite your departing press conference in Jerusalem, Gaza will become a battleground after the unfortunate disengagement occurs in mid-August, if it in fact it does. There's Hamas salivating of suiting up 20,000 of its new adherrents in those brand new spanking uniforms for the "victory" parade with those video cameras from al Jazeera, al Arabiya, Reuters, French Channel 2, CNN, etc. recording it. Dr. Rice can't even bring herself to call a "bomb" a "bomb," so what can you expect. Sharon gets part of the message of the Gazan withdrawal from the teeming crowds of tens of thousands protesters at Kfar Maimon, now disbanded, and tells the nation that big settlement blocs in Judea and Samaria including Ariel, Ma'aleh Adumim and Efrat will be integrated into Israel. But that is for starters in any opening phases of the coming late summer war. Of course a doddering Peres, ever the perennial optimist is dangerously feckless: let's sell the greenhouses and livestock frrom the Gush Katif settlements to the USAID and "think" about planning for billion dollar civil works projects on the Gaza seaport, airport and road and rail tunnels connecting Gaza with the West bank. And let's get those Egyptian security troops to be positioned along the Philadelphia road border of the Rafah gap to policy those smuggling tunnels and seize the arms, munitions and nasty shoulder held missiles-the better to bring down those El Al tourist jets, eh? . Yeah, sure! Never happen!! One would hope that a new party list might erupt in Israel's knesset battle next year with someone more iconic and intelligent like Natan Sharansky to replace an aging Sharon who can retire to his sheep ranch-another product of his corruption. That's another metaphor:Sharon leading sheep to slaughter, eh? Sharon is wounded. Look at the indictment of his son Omri on corruption charges related to Likud campaign financing. But because he's not a sabra, it may not happen for Sharansky. Besides Labor is besotted with Israeli arabs. Not a good prospect for the new year.
Feckless fearful Dr. Rice is simply whistling past the graveyard of lost hopes in her hurry up visit in the middle east last week bracketed by her entourage being roughed up in Khartoum, skating past a bombing in Lebanon, massive death, destruction and mayhem in Egypt, and jihadi terrorist murders of twoinnocent Israelis on their departure at the Kussifim crossing in Israel.
Meanwhile in Iraq, the imminent adoption of a Consittuion written with aid from educated shia and former Brandeis University professor Kanan Makiya and shadtlan dhimmi Jew, NYU Law professor Noah Feldman deprives women under sharia of basic human rights that they had under Article 14 of the previous constitution under nasty fascist Saddam Hussein, who seems unlikely to ever get a trial given internal disputes. The mind boggling slaughter of shia and some cooperartive Sunnis and irridentist Kurds goes on relentless every day. And this with tens of thousands of US and coaltion troops led by generals and diplomats secured in those bunkers in the "green zone." It is no wonder that former Council of Foreign Relations head, Dr. Leslie Gelb a former defense intellectual and foreign policy wonk of note said after his recent visit to Iraq, that he favored autonomy to the three basic ethno religious groups: Kurds in the north, Sunnah in the middle and Shia in the South. Actually, the Shia in the south are already forming a confederation of their own with the shia mullahcracy in Tehran: witness their recent mutual defense pact agreement. So I expect after a breakup of artifical Iraq that autonomy is a prelude to dissolution, realiagnment of historical borders and renewal of open warfare between Sunnah and Shia in the Gulf region. Boy will that start the spot price of a barrel of oil rocketing to heights not scene in real dollar terms since the early 1980's.What do we get? Stagflation!! The difference is this time the Iranians have the nucs and the missiles that the crazed Islamic revolutionaries and thugs in power running Tehran these days- with journalists dying from hunger strikes and kids protesting to live secular Euro western style and being hung- are nutty enough to use them. Are these the nightmares fleeing the Pandora's box of the March Iraq incursion to bring freedom and democracy-antithetical to political islam- to the heartland of the Arab Muslim world? I think so. But Dr Rice and her perennially optimistic striped pants brigade in Foggy Bottom are still prattling the party line of "freedom and democracy" is just around the corner. Just wait, you'll see her spokespersons cheerily mutter at press briefings, while arm twisting Israel to make more concessions and ship those much needed arms and munitions to the killers in the PA. Get of it, Dr. Rice, who are no longer provost at Stanford trying to corral cats-meaning academics. There are real people with real aspirations and successes in Israel that nay nation state would be proud of and that you are sacrificing.
The whole Gaza expulsion scenario smells of appeasement circa Munich, 1938. First the Seudeutenland then Czecholovakia. Substituite the words Gaza for Seudeutenland and Israel for Czechoslovakia, and Rice for Neville Chamerland and you get the picture about what's going on.
Yes, it is turning out to be a long hot summer, isn't it. Welcome back to Foggy Bottom Dr. Rice-at least there's calm or is there? After the London tube and bus bombings the Washinbgton Metro is starting random searches of riders. Well, at least you have you have your air conditioned limo with covering security detail, so you won't have the same risk as the hoi poloi in our nationa's Capitol district, will you?
As the late Hollywood actress and film icon, Bette Davis said in a famous line from the classic movie, "All About Eve," "buckle up your seatbelts....it's going to be a rough ride."
