Terrorists kill Kashmir family

From AlJazeera.Net (not the Qatari television station), "Separatists kill Kashmir family," with thanks to Two Stellas.

Suspected separatist fighters have raided a remote mountainous village in Indian-administered Kashmir and shot to death six men from the same family, police say.

Village elder Akhtar Hussain and five members of his family were shot at point-blank range in the attack in Chittabas village in a thickly forested area 160km north of Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir state, said Senior Superintendent of Police Shakil Baig.

"This is the work of terrorists," Baig said. He was referring to the dozen-odd Islamic groups, some Pakistan-based, fighting Indian security forces in the state since 1989 to carve out a separate homeland or merge the Himalayan region with Pakistan.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the slaying.

More than 66,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

Muslim families are directly targeted in Kashmir by fighters when they are suspected of being informers for security forces, officials say.

But civilians form the bulk of those who have died in Kashmir in the past 16 years, killed in crossfire, bombings, and at the hands of both the separatists and security forces, according to human rights groups...

When are people going to stop saying "This is the work of terrorists," and simply say "It was the Muslims. They did this."

Where is all the self righteous a-wipes like Red Ken, the ISM or Norm Chumspky to decry this murderous warfare and demand India end its "illegal" occupation of Kashmir

Above someone asks if the family was Muslim "or Indian" -- a nice touch, that.

As to names, it is very easy to distinguish Muslim from HIndu names. This is as true for first names -- Mohammad, Ahmad, and assorted variants, on the one hand, Vijay and Vikram and Surinder on the other. As far as last names, "Hussein" ought to have been a dead giveaway.

However, there is one name that swings both ways: Patel. There are Hindu Patels, and Muslim Patels.

For more on this fascinating subject, I implore any Hindu or Sikh visitor to this site to enlighten us, we who would like, in deciding which Indian restaurant or grocery to go to, and which to avoid, to help us distinguish the names in a somewhat more detailed fashion, that only someone deeply imbedded in the suject, and to the manner born, can possibly provide.

Lemme bring to bear my immensely limited knowledge on the subject.....

Post partition, many moslems whose ancestors were Hindu retain clan/tribe/village/caste names as their family names or surnames as we in the west would call them. For e.g. not just "Patel" but surnames such as "Choudhary", "Durrani" etc are shared by both hindus and moslems.

But yes, the sharing of names that draws on a shared ancestry is gradually eroding. Moslems wanna ghettoize and 'safeguard' their precious identitiy so much they are keen to dissociate from anything Hindu in their names and hey, the Hindus too don't mind it seems. They feel they can do without being associated with the mussis (who wouldn't?)....

Anyways, my 2 cents.

As far as last names, "Hussein" ought to have been a dead giveaway.

Voletti is right. Clan names are still retained within the Bangladeshi and Pakistani Muslim community. There are also "fringe" groups such as Khojas, Ismailis, Vohras who are Muslims but the Sunnis and Shias dont consider them to be (like Ahmediyas)...they mostly have a mixed name. There is no specific guide however, dear Hugh to make u enter only a Hindu place. The only thing you can do is just quit if any part of the name sounds islamic (eg. Ahmed Patel, Mirza Choudhary, Javed Anand)...you see in the third case (Javed Anand), it is the first name which is Islamic and the last name is Hindu, though this stupid "secularist" is nothing but a closet Islamist (and a Muslim).

Ah well you can always go to stores in Gujarati settled areas of New Jersey. 90% will be Hindu...or the recognized chains such as Taste of India.

G'Day!

"Separatists..." and it came from Al Jizzeera. What more do you need to know?

Huge Hindus usually keep religious idols or photos of hindu gods at their business place , its usually above the owners chair .

"Huge Hindus..."

How does that old saying go? Size doesn't matter.
