As I have pointed out many times, Islamic reformers will always be challenged by hardliners who invoke the plain words of the Qur'an and Sunnah against them. It is not up to any non-Muslim to state or determine what is "true" Islam, but reformers face a battle that is decidedly uphill.
"Activist imam puts politics into sermons," from AP, with thanks to Jeffrey Imm:
The voice of the new imam at one of the largest mosques on the East Coast rang loud from the pulpit during Friday services: "The call to reform Islam is an alien call.""Ignorance comes from outside circles who know nothing about us," Mr. Elsayed said during noon services to more than 500 men and women, with women worshipping in a separate room. It was one of three services Dar al-Hijrah holds every Friday.
Mr. Elsayed, who assumed duties as imam of the mosque June 1, is well known in the Muslim community for his political activism.
He has served as secretary general of the Muslim American Society, an advocacy group that some accuse of promoting a fundamentalist strain of Islam.
He also has served as an unofficial spokesman for the family of Ahmed Omar Abu Ali, who is accused of joining al Qaeda while studying overseas and plotting to assassinate President Bush. Mr. Abu Ali grew up in Falls Church and worshipped at Dar al-Hijrah.
Mr. Elsayed has accused the Justice Department of unfairly targeting Mr. Abu Ali and other young Muslims for prosecution.
Perhaps not surprisingly then, Mr. Elsayed's sermons take a political tone.
"Islam forbids you to give allegiance to those who kick you off your homeland, and to those who support those who kick you off your homeland," he told worshippers. "We do have license to respond with all force necessary to answer our attackers."
Mr. Elsayed explained after the sermon that opposition to U.S. policy in the Middle East is different than viewing the American people as the enemy.
Asked his views on militant groups such as Hamas, which the U.S. government has designated as a terrorist organization, Mr. Elsayed compared Hamas to Nelson Mandela's African National Congress -- organizations that resorted to violent resistance only after decades of injustice.
"Everybody jumps on Hamas," Mr. Elsayed said. "When did Hamas first emerge? 1990 or so? Look at how long Israel has occupied [Palestinian lands]. How long did it take to say enough is enough?"
Still, he said support for Hamas' objectives does not mean he always supports the group's tactics, which have included suicide bombings.
"Islam calls for the minimum effective response to aggression," Mr. Elsayed said.
And that necessary minimum is getting smaller in the face of Israeli concessions. Read it all.
Great! A Jihadist freak takes over a huge mosque here. This is the one where they got rid of the moderate imam/mullah.
Mark my words: The higher the oil price the more in your face arrogant the ummah becomes. The nerve of these rotters intruding into the United States then complaining about their homeland being usurped. The Jews of Israel have a tiny slice of former Dar al Islam turf and the Islamo-kooks are in a permanent rage. Meanwhile they usurp and take over numerous European neighborhoods, cities, and in 25 years, nations. You go to Rotterdam and the Muslim women are wheeling around baby carriages with 4 children in tow. All sucking off the social welfare system on the terminally naive Dutch.
Police don't go into numerous Muslim neighborhoods in Europe. The cancer is festering and spreading.
"Islam forbids you to give allegiance to those who kick you off your homeland, and to those who support those who kick you off your homeland," he told worshippers. "We do have license to respond with all force necessary to answer our attackers."
Elsayed better be careful because if he's talking about the US, these words come close to sedition.Just incase he doesn't know sedition is a crime in the US that can result in life imprisonment.
I can only hope that its media perfidy that's causing such a lack of reaction in western capitals. Itc coz people just don'tr 'know' teh truth thankls to media dhimmitude.
The alternative, that people 'know but don't care' is far, far worse. Its not impossible, in an age of ultra PC and socialist utopias to stop having children and not worry about the time when you're gonna be dead and gone....
Every reading of a language that is essentially without vowels is an interpretation. And each potential new version is a de facto "reform". So Mr. Imam here doesn't have the simplest grasp of the root of the Arabic of the Qur'an. (Or any tongue, ultimatrely.)
It's poetry, metaphor, approximation, guess-work, wish-fulfillment, maybe-this/maybe-that; either/or.
The folly of all fundamentalisms is a naive vision of Language's uneasy depths and failing to appreciate the psychological foundation of all symbol-making.
As absurd as seeing a STOP sign -and stopping forever.
All of these imams are stunning simpletons.
I believe the Europeans should drive the muslims back to their homeland. Asian invaders did a very effective job in getting the respect of the Arabs. I believe it was through brutal force?
