Some time ago I suggested in an article that the phrase "war on terror" be discarded in favor of a more forthright acknowledgement that we are defending ourselves against a global jihad. And the good news today is that the Administration has, after over a year, heeded my advice and discarded the "war on terror" label. The bad news, however, is that we are no farther than we were before from being honest about what we are really up against. Who can defeat an enemy he is afraid to name? But in any case, we are now fighting "a global struggle against violent extremism."
Extreme what? Extreme love for broccoli? Extreme involvement in fantasy baseball leagues? Oh -- violent extremism. So only if you beat your neighbor over the head and take his broccoli, or broke a chair over the head of a member of your fantasy league after he convinced you to trade Roger Clemens for Joe Shlabotnik would you become a focus of Washington's campaign. This new jihad ("struggle") against "violent extremism" is even more poorly focused than the war on terror -- and will continue to leave us vulnerable to being blindsided by attacks from quarters that we are not willing to admit to ourselves are possible centers of the war against us. At very least, it is better because it does allow for a less exclusive focus on military solutions. But that is not much.

I have been saying for years that terror is a tactic, not an enemy. It is nice of him to acknowledge that I have been right all along. Now, General, here's your next lesson: define "violent extremism." Specify exactly what these people are being extreme about. Then we may start getting somewhere regarding these necessary non-military measures.
Oh, and by the way: I'm declaring my own "struggle" against "unrestrained enthusiasm."
If only we were so preoccupied with our borders and national security as we seem to be concerning semantics.

Yes, their Op/Ed article, at least the one they signed (who knows who ghost-wrote it), that appeared a few days ago, in The New Duranty Times, was appalling. Commencement-speech banalities, along with talk about the "proud religion" of Islam. What is wrong with people? As for this "violent extremism," here we go again -- Islam is good, only those
violent extremists are bad. Does that mean that if there as an end to all terror attacks, to all violence, and if through Da'wa and demographic conquest the islamization of Europe proceeds apace, we should not be worried, not try to stop and reverse it, not wonder if the takeover of Western Europe by the forces of Islam would not be a mortal threat (and not just from the weaponry thus acquired)?
The synecdoche presents itself: Jihad, standing in for Islam. Use it. Talk about those "violent extremists" who believe in something they call "Jihad" to spread their ideology throughout the world, using the instruments of terror, combat, wealth, propaganda, Da'wa (yes, use that word, go ahead) and demographic conquest, to subjugate all non-Muslims. Of course those who think that the dar al-Islam, the Lands of Islam, must include the entire world, are simply a tiny minority. The "vast and overwhelming majority" of Muslims do not believe in Jihad as anything more than spiritual improvement. You know that. I know that. Muslims have told us so repeatedly. And we have no doubt that they will aid us to limit the damage and destruction of those who believe that Jihad is something else.
Surely you people in Washington are up to this task -- you know, pretending that Islam is not what it is, and thereby embarrassing Muslims into pretending, as well, that it is not what it is. Man Charged With Hate Crime In Mall Murder

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — The fatal stabbing of a 56-year-old woman at a mall will be prosecuted as a hate crime because the suspect said he wanted to kill a white person, authorities said Tuesday.
Phillip Grant (search), 43, who is black, was indicted Tuesday on charges of murder, murder as a hate crime, and possession of a weapon. The June 29 slaying of Concetta Russo-Carriero (search) took place in the parking garage of the Galleria Mall in White Plains.
If convicted of murder as a hate crime, the minimum sentence would be 20 years to life instead of 15 years to life, prosecutors said.
A call to Grant's lawyer was not immediately returned.
In a 45-minute tape played at a court hearing earlier this month, Grant told police that he was fighting a race war and killed the woman because she was white.
"All I knew was she had blond hair and blue eyes and she had to die," he said. "(She) was not an innocent victim — because she was white."
Grant, who was homeless, is a convicted rapist who had served his maximum sentence.

It's pure logic. There can be no war on terrorism if we aren't permitted to use the word "terror". The BBC has banned this word so thoroughly, that they recently even removed it from a quotation of Tony Blair. They now speak of "militants" and "activists".
We should therefore change to a "war on militant activism".

It seems to me that some lessons from history are being ignored. Remember what happens when you forget the lessons of history! You are doomed to repeat them. While certain religious leaders have been reported to condemn the bombings, they always say -but- for example, Britain should not be in Iraq. Look back a few thousand years. What did Alexander the Great do at the siege of Tyre and what did he do at other places. Similarly, the Romans finally had enough of Carthage. These cultures were utterly destroyed. Their languages and religions pretty much ceased to exist. More recently we have the A-bomb, for example. If muslims really love their religion, if it has anything positive to offer them or the world, they better accomodate to reality and reform or perhaps, no matter how many of them there are, they will seem to be looking at Alexander's army at the gates, and the end will come.

i live in the hudson river valley, just north of NYC. i would say that close to 50% of the people i work with on a daily basis are Haitian. we just had this discussion the other night at work. i said that with Haiti's location in the Caribbean, it should be a garden paradise, a prosperous argricultural society with supplemental income from a thriving tourist industry. my co-workers agreed, informing me that when they were kids(in their 50's now) Haiti was full of Americans who actually chose to retire there. then it descended into statements about how the US wasn't doing the right thing, etc.

US reveals Iraq nuclear operation
The US has revealed that it removed more than 1.7 metric tons of radioactive material from Iraq in a secret operation last month.

Tests confirm that artillery shell that blew up in Iraq did indeed contain sarin--between three quarts' and a gallon's worth, Fox News reports. The New York Times buries the story on page 11 (something about weddings in Massachusetts led the front page, bizarrely enough), and it's shot through with pro-Saddam spin:
The discovery of the sarin-filled shell appears to offer some of the most substantial evidence to date that Mr. Hussein did not destroy all of the banned chemical agent, as he claimed before the war last year. It provides some solace, and possibly fresh leads, to the American teams that have been conducting an otherwise fruitless search for the weapons for more than a year.
The Bush administration's belief that Mr. Hussein continued to maintain stocks of such banned weapons was the primary justification put forward for invading Iraq in March 2003. American inspectors scouring the country since April 2003 have so far found little evidence that Mr. Hussein maintained such weapons or a program to produce them.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A roadside bomb containing sarin nerve agent exploded near a U.S. military convoy, the U.S. military said Monday. Two people were treated for ``minor exposure,'' but no serious injuries were reported.
``The Iraqi Survey Group confirmed today that a 155-millimeter artillery round containing sarin nerve agent had been found,'' said Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, the chief military spokesman in Iraq. ``The round had been rigged as an IED (improvised explosive device) which was discovered by a U.S. force convoy.

A key fact has been left out. The "white farmers" were French, who when faced with life threatening danger - tend to run away (historical fact).
However -Haiti being an island -there was no where to run.
