More idiocy from military officials who refuse to understand that jihadists will perceive demonstrations of compassion only as weakness. From Reuters, with thanks to Skeetstreet:
KABUL (Reuters) - The U.S. military freed 76 Taliban suspects on Saturday as part of an effort to encourage rank and file guerrillas to lay down their arms, the latest batch freed this year despite a surge in militant violence. The men, detained at various stages in the U.S.-led battle against Taliban guerrillas since toppling the fundamentalists from power in 2001, were freed from a U.S. military detention center at the main U.S. base at Bagram to the north of Kabul.
"I am very happy that today some of our brothers have been freed and are joining their families," Sibghatullah Mojadidi, a former president who heads the government's reconciliation initiative, told the former prisoners at a ceremony in Kabul.
Most were from southern and eastern Afghanistan, where Taliban guerrillas remain most active.
They were the latest freed since President Hamid Karzai called for release from custody of all Afghan prisoners in U.S. detention following an outcry over reports of abuse, including the deaths of two inmates at Bagram.
Another group of 57 were freed early this month, 53 in June, 86 in May and 81 in January.
Let's not forget. Such decisions don't come from the bottom up.
They are decisions made at the very highest levels. The SecDef directs, on behalf of the President, and the troops comply.
Many in the military would handle the situation differently.

I suppose all US military prisoners, everywhere, should be released over reports of abuse.
Maybe the reporters would be happier if the US military took no prisoners, and settled the problems in the field.
We already know from other reports that many, if not all released Islamic prisoners, continue jihad after release. Jihadic recidivisim, the swinging door phenomena. Jails, prisons and mental institutions are full of recidivists.
The invocation, "if at first you dont succeed, try , try again", applys perfectly to jihadists.
The US/others should expect more murder and mayhem by released jihadists...this is not a good plan...
A dhimmitude Taliban note:
On NPR (Naturally Pubescent Radio) their Weekend Edition Saturday morning show's host Scott Simon was talking about the status of the luckless Special Ops soldier captured by terrorist 'remnants' in Afghanistan, describing this trooper as "in the custody of the Taliban".
"Custody"?
Isn't that a term used when a legal government forcibly detains someone?
Simon then said that it was reported by the terrorists that the soldier has been "executed".
Using another 'legal term' for the illegal actions of a group of maurauding maniacs.
Lovely how our press justifies and legitimizes these lunatics with the pacific patina of civilization's own hijacked language.
He should have said:
"One of our valiant soldiers in the fight against the sworn enemies of civilization was unfortunately captured by a group of these terrorists who now claimed to have murdered him, flouting all the well-understood rules of war and in direct violation of the Geneva Conventions for the handling of P.O.W.'s."
But, of course, such censorious words are reserved for Abu Ghraib and Gitmo. The homicidal pus-bags get a free pass from the p.c. self-gelded Western liberal press.
Shame on you, Scott Simon.
Lickspittle (unconscious?) linguistic lackey of terrorist scum.
This use of the word "custody" reminds me of the single worst misuse of a word I have ever seen.
It occurs in Grenville's History of the Twentieth Century (Harvard University Press), the first edition, where under that famous picture of Jews marching along, hands raised, faces reflecting both terror and nobility, the caption underneath reads(I may have a word or two misremembered but not the main one): "Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto being chaperoned by German soldiers." I do not know if this was changed in the second edition.
Chaperoned. Custody.
The significance of words. The overwhelming importance of words.
The importance of words.
Not the military. The civilian government.
The incredible importance of words...word magic, word trickery...wolves in sheeps clothing fooling many...disaster is the result...
Is that all they ever do with captured Jihadi's?
Are they on a catch and release mission?
How come we neverf hear about any of them being executed for their crimes?
