KABUL, Afghanistan -- An Afghan man released from Guantanamo Bay said he saw guards throwing the Quran, but all such abuse stopped late last year after a loudspeaker announcement that U.S. soldiers have no right to touch Islam's holy book.
Moheb Ullah Borekzai made the comments Thursday in an interview with The Associated Press, three days after he was freed from the prison camp in Cuba and flown home to Afghanistan.

There have been repeated accusations of Quran abuse at Guantanamo, including an allegation last month by a Russian Muslim cleric formerly held at the prison that guards regularly put the holy book in a toilet, although he said he never witnessed that himself.

Borekzai said that during his three years at Guantanamo he never saw or heard claims from other prisoners of guards abusing the Quran by placing it in toilets. But he said he had seen guards throw the Quran two or three times.

"We would always put the holy Quran in a high place, for example, in a drawer or on a shelf," he said, speaking in a guesthouse in the Afghan capital, Kabul. "They (the guards) would just throw it on the ground or on the bed. ... I, myself, have seen them throwing the Quran."

Such mistreatment of the Quran made the prisoners "very angry," he said, adding that late last year guards "changed their procedures."

"The Americans made a promise that U.S. soldiers have no right to touch the Quran ... They announced (it) on loudspeakers," Borekzai said. "There has been no abuse of the Quran since last year."

During Muslim prayer times, guards now are silent and are "not even talking to each other," Borekzai said...

Alriiiiiight! Now the prisoners all have a secret place to stash messages (e.g. information that will help them to plan riots and/or escapes,) bomb-making material*, drugs**, poison***, and weapons****.

Too bad there's NO ONE in the chain of "command" that will do anything about it.

I still can't believe that "abusing" a book still makes headlines.

* Cut off a thousands match heads, grid them into a powder, and see what happens when you light the pile.

There's something wrong here.

I've read the Southern Command directive on Qur'an handling, and have contacted both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army chaplain commands about the already absurd 'white gloves' policy.

Think about it. Muslim chaplains are soldiers, and you know they have every right to touch that 'holy' book.

This guy is, I suspect, misinformed, or is telling only a part of the story.

The Quran is holy and must be displayed
properly in a high place, just ask the US troops in Iraq that find Qurans displayed on the dashboards of the cars used by suicide bombers
when they slaughter OTHER Muslims.

It is nice to see that if I joined the Armed Forces I wouldn't be forced to touch a Quran
that was based on a misogynistic pedophile
that also waged war in about 60 battles and hacked the heads of the dead victims as a sign of victory for Islam.

Has anyone noticed that when CAIR declares the recent spate of murders by Muslims as un-Islamic
they never actually produce a Quran to show us where the values condemning violence is within the holy book.

I'm guessing Hooper doesn't want us to see the whole paragraph with the preamble that "Innocent" civilians are those that aren't the "Enemies" of Islam and Allah.

Terminator, I don't know where you can pick that 'holey holey Condi clip' up. Have you checked the State Dept website? Also each networks news broadcast (archives if they have access). I doubt if it can be found on the net but that is where I would start. I'm sure their Islam section at the State Dept. if they have one would make me hurl so I'll have to wait for my stomach to be empty to check that.

you can probably get a copy of Condi's speech from one of the networks, or a local affiliate, depending on where the speech was given. If it was part of a broadcast it will be easy, otherwise you might have to pay for research time. The only time I checked about , I was quoted a reasonable fee for a tape of the coverage of a topic on the local news, taking place over several nights.

I am really appalled at this dhimmi attitude with respect to the koran untouchability at Gitmo. PC crap piled high indeed. My mind will not accept this at face value, and I keep hoping that the story is untrue.

If it really is true, then we individuals are going to have to deface, defile, and deliver a few more stinking korans to make up for the shortfall at Gitmo. I saw a handwritten sign in a restroom the other day that said "Quran Recepticle" with an arrow pointing at the toilet. Nice touch.

This little tactic may seem like juvenile nasty-boy stuff, but I think it is important to fight the muzzies on EVERY front. I have made up my mind not to cede ANY ground whatsoever. This is a world war, and the sooner we shoulder the burden the sooner we beat the scumbags. Doing little things revives the spirit, dispels feelings of loss of control, and promotes an attitude of defiance and progress.

Bring me another koran! This one's dirty.

This whole thing about them being all angry at soldiers touching their precious war manual is just an act. A power trip. They've seen how the West groveled after what happened with previous alleged Quran "desecrations" and they're just riding that one for all its worth. Pathetic little losers, incarcerated at Gitmo, with infidel soldiers having control over them. Must really grate on them. So this is a little way to pump themselves up, like Islam likes to do. It needs to be on top, lording it over infidels. And we, unfortunately, let them.

I think that's part of the point. The military has neutralized this ludicrous pretext for Muzzy indignation about Gitmo... think of how this would drive the perps crazy at Gitmo! Their inferiors are properly forced to handle the execrable book with white cotton gloves, their infidel poo-poo-stinky skin too yucky to come in contact with their Islamic manifesto... But look who gets to go home after hours, look who gets to tell them when they can poop, wash, eat and sleep... There should be no Korans on hand to touch.

These books can be used for at least three dangerous acts:

1) reinforcing the terrorist mindset.

2) passing coded messages by referring to numbered suras (which the guards would have no clue about)

3) enabling a weapon to be fashioned

For those unaware of how this latter idea could be possible, papier mache (chewed pages and spit) with a little 'blacking' (anything that would dye the papier mache a dark color) could be used, as other criminals in other times have managed to do, to fashioned a faux 'pistol' (soap bars have also been used to do this little trick with some carving skill).

A surprised and disoriented guard could be thrown off for just long enough to allow a short and bloody prison riot.

NO GODDAMNED KORANS AT GITMO! -or in any other detention facility.

Wherever they are, trouble follows.
