Plaintiff Danine Hammond, 27, filed suit in Orange County in central Florida against the apartment complex where she had been scheduled to begin working in April 2004, after a supervisor told her that before starting her job she would have to remove her religious head covering.Hammond is seeking 15,000 dollars in lost wages, in addition to damages, according to court documents. “Ms Hammond is Muslim and due to her religious beliefs, wears a veil or headscarf and long sleeves when out in public,” the court papers read.
“The wearing of long sleeves and a headscarf is a bonafide religious practice observed by Muslims, which the defendant is required to accommodate unless it creates an undue hardship,” the suit said. The case is one of several in Florida filed by Muslim women alleging discrimination because of their attire, including a suit in 2004 by a plaintiff against the Disney World theme park, and another filed in 2003 against the state government.
If Ms. Hammond wants to sweat like a Muslim pig (pigs don't sweat, actually) with long sleeves in the Florida summer, more power to her, tho' she might get fired over body odor issues. This is not France; women with head-scarves are more into fashion than religion.
Has Ms. Hammond been properly questioned about the presence or absence of her clitoris?

Disney world theme park?
OK, if the employers have something against women in black burqas working with children in Disney world (why, oh why one may wonder!), maybe they should give them a special task, they could create a new Ghost garden or something. A lot of Muslim women could find employment there, without compromising their religious fashion. Of course, they should go through a daily body search when coming to work, for explosive belts, machine guns, grenades and other such things that, as experience shows, can be hidden under those entertaining garments...
Let them all dress in burqas in our sweltering Florida heat and humidity. They will drop like flies.
Well, there must be some leeway within Islam since in Turkey many women who would normally wear the headscarf are forbidden to do so in government offices and schools (as part of Ataturk's move towards secularization). They've managed to do this for many years now - removing the scarf for daily work, going home and putting the scarf back on. No one has been traumatized by this that I've heard of and they still consider themselves faithful Muslims.
If Turkish Muslims are able to do this, why can't American Muslims?

I currently hold annual passes to the Disney World complex. The minute I witness DisneyWorld hiring veiled employees in any capacity, I will refuse to purchase any and all Disney products. For two decades my family and I have enjoyed "the happiest place on earth" simply because it is.
As Hugh often sites, art/entertainment is threatened by the culture that embraces death in the name of their god.
Once this 'death embracing' cult destroys that ambiance with their presence you will witness the financial demise of the Disney enterprise.
I hope this employer (whoever it is) wins this lawsuit, and every employer should incorporate a dress code that prohibits this nonsensical garb as a safety issue . . .period.

of course I hope, with you, that even in this case (and particularly in this case) the employer will win.
just made a sarcastic suggestion that if they MUST get to work in a place like that and still wear their burqas, then better let them work as ghosts, scaring children in an intentional and controlled manner, in a gloomy theme park like a "haunted house" or something like that...

In my opinion this is no different than an employer refusing to hire a white supremasist wearing a swastika. Islam has become like Nazism and it is the employer's God given right not to hire them.

I'm pretty sure I've read arguments where Muslims say the Hijab is not a religious requirement which typicaly stems from their argument against the fact that hijabs and other type coverings stifle womens rights. WASHINGTON: A federal judge yesterday ordered the D.C. fire department to allow three bearded Muslim fire-fighters to serve on full duty until Aug 1 when he expects to decide whether the safety issues outweigh the men's claims that shaving would violate their religious rights.
U.S. District Judge James Robertson told an attorney for the city and an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union that he would decide the case after a one-day hearing on Aug. 1 that will examine whether facial hair puts fire-fighters at risk.
The case was first filed in 2001.
"This is definitely a victory, even though it is temporary," said plaintiff Hassan A. Umrani, a city fire-fighter who has worn a full beard since his first day on the job 16 years ago
