BUFFALO, New York (AP) -- A Yemeni-American businessman accused of helping pay for a group of men to travel to a terrorist training camp was sentenced Tuesday to more than three years in prison for his role in a cigarette smuggling operation.Aref Ahmed was convicted in March 2004 on charges of money laundering and trafficking in contraband cigarettes.
Federal prosecutors say that Ahmed gave $14,000 to five members of the so-called Lackawanna Six and had tried to get his money back after learning some of the men left the al-Qaida camp without completing their training. Lackawanna is the upstate New York town where Ahmed and the six men lived.
Ahmed has not been charged in the Lackawanna case. The issue was raised as part of the government's request to deny Ahmed bail.
Ahmed's attorneys have denied the allegations.
The Lackawanna Six -- Sahim Alwan, Faysal Galab, Mukhtar al-Bakri, Yasein Taher, Yahya Goba and Shafal Mosed -- are serving sentences ranging from seven to 10 years after pleading guilty in 2003 to providing support to a terrorist organization.
Some in the group have said they received money from Ahmed, which they used to travel to the camp in Afghanistan in the spring of 2001, Assistant U.S. Attorney Anthony Bruce said Tuesday.

Of course this "Yemeni-American" Aref Ahmed had every right to be furious at the lackadaisical Lackawanna Five who didn't complete the course he had paid for. Anyone who as the result of a charitable impulse has ever shelled out $14,000 would understand completely the chagrin Aref Ahmed felt; that was a lot of hard-earned money, a lot of smuggled cigarettes, that he had donated to the cause. Money doesn't grow on trees, you know -- you have to break the meaningless Infidel laws for it, any way you can.
And what was their problem, anyway?
Running around in the open air, three squares a day, lots of companionship among people who thought exactly -- I mean exactly -- like themselves, about absolutely everything. What was eating them? Possibly they didn't like the class in Crafts, or Archery, or was it possibly Swimming, where none of them wanted even to pronounce the word "dog-paddle," that got to them? Could it have been something else, possibly the "humiliation" and "anger" and "frustration" they felt -- and how easily these emotions must have come to them -- when they discovered, once at Camp Terror, that they were not allowed to sleep and study with the big boys, the Beavers and the Bears, but had to live in the same tents, and go through the same curriculum, with the youngest and most inexperienced would-be mass murderers from Infidel lands. How humiliating to come all the way from Lackawanna, New York to learn to massacre Infidels, and be put in with the Chipmunks!
But to take it out on poor Mr. Aref Ahmed, that smuggling-stiff, rising early, day after day, to break those Infidel laws and support the Jihad any way he could -- surely the Lackwanna Five had a duty of greater loyalty to him than that didn't they? If they can't be loyal to a fellow Muslim willing to bankroll their training in murdering of Infidels, well then what can the word "loyalty" possibly mean?
