ALEXANDRIA, Va. - A prominent Islamic scholar who exhorted his followers after the Sept. 11 attacks to join the Taliban and fight U.S. troops was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison.Ali al-Timimi of Fairfax was convicted in April of soliciting others to levy war against the United States, inducing others to aid the Taliban, and inducing others to use firearms in violation of federal law.
The cleric addressed the court for 10 minutes before his sentencing.
"I will not admit guilt nor seek the court's mercy. I do this simply because I am innocent," al-Timimi said.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Gordon Kromberg said al-Timimi "hates the United States" and has called for its destruction.
"He's allowed to do that in this country," Kromberg said. "He's not allowed to solicit treason. He deserves every day he gets."...
Prosecutors portrayed al-Timimi, a native U.S. citizen, as having "rock star" status among his followers, who frequently heard his lectures at a small mosque in Falls Church.
In particular, prosecutors said, the defendant wielded enormous influence among a group of young Muslim men in northern Virginia who played paintball games in 2000 and 2001. Authorities said they were a "Virginia jihad network" training for holy war around the globe.
Nine members of the group have been convicted for their roles in the conspiracy, with prison terms ranging from three years to life.
Al-Timimi's lawyers argued that their client merely suggested that Muslims may want to leave the United States after Sept. 11 because of the potential for a backlash against them.
But he was accused of telling a group of young Muslim men just days after the attack that an apocalyptic battle between Muslims and nonbelievers was at hand and that Muslims were obligated to engage in holy war. He told the group that defense of the Taliban was a requirement and that U.S. troops were a legitimate target, according to court testimony.
Several of the men who heard Al-Timimi's speech traveled days later to Pakistan and began training with a militant Islamic group called Lashkar-e-Taiba, officials said. Some testified that their goal was to obtain training that would allow them to fight alongside the Taliban, though none actually made it to Afghanistan.
Funny how he was just "suggesting" that it might be good to leave the US because of backlash, and some thought that the best way to do that would be to go to Pakistan and join the jihad.

Just where did you get the idea that this Mullah's sentence is too harsh? Have you read the Constitution of the United States? Treason is a death penalty offense under the US Constitution.Sedition is criminal speech that can earn you a life sentence in the US. The "Blink Shiekh" was convicted of sedition and is currently serving life in prison. The prosecutor is correct this guy deserves every day he got. Let this be a warning to others that would engage in treason and sedition.Treason and sedition are very serious offenses in the United States.

The federal Bureau of Prisons is holding 119 persons with "specific ties" to international Islamist terrorist groups, yet has no full-time Arabic translators or a system to monitor their communications, The Washington Times has learned.
A congressional aide said Bureau of Prisons officials maintain an informal list of 17 employees who are proficient in Arabic. The prison officials acknowledge, however, that none of the workers had been tested to determine Arabic fluency or undergone a special screening or background check, the aide said.
Capitol Hill is starting to notice.

The "Blind" Shiekh was tried, convicted and sentenced to life in prison for sedition.Prosecutors wanted to make the point that being blind, elderly and diabetic didn't exempt a person from prosecution when he urged others to make war on the United States. There was a recent article about sedition laws being used against muslim fanatics in the "war on terror". Al-Timmi's speech constitutes sedition which is criminal speech.His sentence was lawful and in keeping with the Constitution of the US.Had he been convicted of treason he could have been sentenced to death. I do not want someone dedicated to the destruction of the US walking free in the US or anywhere else on earth. Since the beginning of the "war on terror" the Bush administration decided to go after Americans hard who engage in sedition and treason. These type of harsh sentences are designed to discourage such acts while saving American lives.
How did the feds hear about Ali al-Timimi orginally? Does anyone know how this case developed? Tip from inside the mosque? Did thee feds have somebody infiltrate the mosque who actually heard these exhortations? I want a blueprint so we can prosecute more of these skanky, murderous, two-faced "scholars."

Learning Arabic is not an easy feat, not only because it is a very difficult language, it is also due to the fact that there are more than one type of Arabic that one needs to learn.
Classical Arabic: The one used in the Hadith, the Quran, classical poetry and based mainly on Mohamed’s own dialect of Quraish and other notable tribes. On top of a complex grammar, syntax, morphology, it is also full of obscure terminology from extinct tribes. In fact, the meaning of many words used in the Quran is not readily understood. Actually, a foreign translation relies on the tafseer or the interpretation literature to surmise the meaning. Consequently, it requires a scholar to truly master classical Arabic.
MSA or the so called Modern Standard Arabic: Literary language used officially in government, the press, the law and education in the Arabic speaking world. No one speaks this language in day-to-day interaction. It is really an updated version of classical Arabic minus a lot of the terminology and constructs that are only suitable for a goat herding society and encompassing many barrowed words, phrases, and constructs collected through interaction with subjugated nations and western colonialists. Due to the low literacy rates, only the educated understand it well. Also, each region has its own version of MSA, in the same way that Standard English in Britain and North America contain local variations. Think of it in the same way as Latin used in medieval Europe as the lingua franca of the upper classes and professionals.
Local dialects: There are many dialects of Arabic that people use in their day-to-day interactions and grow up speaking. Some of the dialects are difficult to understand by speakers of other dialects. However, most speakers have little difficulty in communicating with speakers of the other dialects. These dialects developed and grew apart as a result of natural linguistic variation over time, combining with pre-conquest native languages, and the original Arab dialect spoken by the colonizing tribes. If not for the influence of the Quran, Arabic would have become many different languages by now. Islamic and linguistic bodies work to suppress dialects, preferring that people use an artificial language based upon a seventh century tongue of a herding nomadic society. Even within the same country, there could be several very distinct dialects. The Cairo-Egyptian dialect is by far the most widely understood, due in no small measures to the popularity of Egyptian televisions and movies, and the fact that the Egyptian population is almost one third the number of Arabic speakers.
The main dialect families are the following:
The Egyptian: spoken in Egypt, parts of Sudan, Libya, and the Gaza strip.
The Levantine dialect: Spoken in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and the West bank.
The Gulf dialect: Spoken in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries. Iraqi is considered a gulf dialect despite some similarity to Syrian and the barrowing of many Persian words.
The Yemeni dialect: Similar to the Gulf, spoken in the Yemen and parts of Sultanate of Oman
Maghrabi: Spoken in North African countries including: Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Mauritania, parts of Libya, and to a lesser extent in other sub-Saharan and West African Muslim countries. Considered the most exotic dialect of Arabic and many other Arabic speakers find it quite difficult to understand.
Somali/ East African: Spoken in Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and parts of the Sudan.
To summarize, in order have a grasp of Arabic used by the preachers of terror, assuming you have the capacity and the inclination: First, study MSA and as you get a grasp of it, widen your study with classical Islamic sources to learn the Islamic terminology used by Jihadest. Secondly, study at least two local dialects: the Gulf dialect must be one of them, and the other should be either Egyptian or Levantine. A one with a natural talent for languages, needs 3 years of intensive class room studies, and two years of language immersion to reach near native fluency in both the written and spoken forms of Arabic.

The sad fact is that in prision Islam rules. He should have been given a death sentence. He will convert several more in prision to do there evil. Its not really a start at all. Until we recognize that Islam is the enemy our attempts are only helping the enemy the third world war has started the sad fact is our civilzation may well be destroyed before we weak up to that simple reality.
I don't think islam rules in prisons any more than other inmate factions. Inmates tend to organize along racial lines in almost every prison. muslims will align with black inmates as most muslim converts in prison are black. There seems to be little patriotic sentiment among inmates of any race. Most of those people are the hurray for me and f... you types. There are no benefits to prison that I can think of and muslims who can be sent to prison are in the right place. The best place for them naturally is with the ...you know..the virgins.

Thanks, that is a well-reasoned, non-emotional article. I like the author's description of "syncretism", of treating Islam/Judaism/Christianity as if they are pretty much the same thing. Tony Blair, George Bush et al keep telling us that story. Not only are they uninformed about what the Qu'ran actually says, but they are also incorrect in predicting the response of congregants to radicals in their midst (like those at the King Fahd mosque).
Whether or not he makes converts in prison, he should never have been given the chance. People like him are ;ile radioactive waste: they cannot be safely handled. Wherever he goes, he will be trouble.
Waht the West needs is a resurrection of the ancient penalty of exile, coupled with an agrement between Western countries that people exiled from one country will not be given shelter in another. Exile them to Muslim countries, even if they are born and bred Western citizens, and make them enjoy the amenities of the Muslim culture and law which they would impose upon us. It seems poetic (and comparatively cheap) justice on a man who has done his best to force the alien law of Shariah on the land where he was born; let him experience it for the rest of his life.
