Would-Be Millennium Bomber Gets 22 Years

Even 22 years seems a bit light considering the damage he wanted to do, and somehow I doubt he will be "reformed" in prison. He will however, potentially have a negetive influence on the prisoners around him.

I don't understand why "you can't be a terrorist, be in our custody, and remain alive..."

When are we going to get tough on cleaning up this Islamic terrorist detritus...?

I agree with you regarding both sentence and recruiting. Terrorists like Ressam should be segregated from the non-Muslim prison population otherwise you risk getting more slopeydopes like Richard Reid and Jose Padilla. The recruitees aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer.

I suspect Mr. Ressam's time in jail will be spent stewing with thoughts of revenge and hate. Much like Ramzi Yousef. Read below:

This is an apt punishment because the hate he feels will ultimately eat him alive like a slow cancer.

A separate prison should be created for all those who have been convicted of terrorist-related offenses. That will serve to segregate them, to keep them from conducting Da'wa among the general prison population. And perhaps, for administrative convenience -- you know, prayers five times a day, Halal meals, and all that -- depicted as a favor to the prisoners themselves -- more generally Muslim prisoners, whatever their crimes, can be sentenced to jails for Muslims only. It might withstand strict scrutiny -- after all, the government interest at stake, to be invoked as justifying such a measure, is the prevention of a major security threat to this country.

Wherever populations susceptible to Da'wa have been identified, there is where the government, and private non-Muslim religious groups, must concentrate their counter-Da'wa efforts. No more sitting around thinking that it is all a matter of supreme indifference who does what as far as proselytzizing goes. This isn't proselytizing. It is signing up recruits for the Army of Allah. And that Army of Allah is a permanent threat to Infidels, to the Constitution, to all of our social and political arrangements. We don't have to simply watch it take place. There are a thousand things that could, and should, be done.

22 years is not enough. I don't care how old he will be. This guy should never be on the street again. He tried to kill hundreds/thousands of people. This isn't your run-of-the-mill park rapist or something. He should get life in prison. The only reason he shouldn't get death is because he didn't actually succeed in killing anyone.

Man Charged With Hate Crime In Mall Murder

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — The fatal stabbing of a 56-year-old woman at a mall will be prosecuted as a hate crime because the suspect said he wanted to kill a white person, authorities said Tuesday.
Phillip Grant (search), 43, who is black, was indicted Tuesday on charges of murder, murder as a hate crime, and possession of a weapon. The June 29 slaying of Concetta Russo-Carriero (search) took place in the parking garage of the Galleria Mall in White Plains.
If convicted of murder as a hate crime, the minimum sentence would be 20 years to life instead of 15 years to life, prosecutors said.
A call to Grant's lawyer was not immediately returned.
In a 45-minute tape played at a court hearing earlier this month, Grant told police that he was fighting a race war and killed the woman because she was white.
"All I knew was she had blond hair and blue eyes and she had to die," he said. "(She) was not an innocent victim — because she was white."
Grant, who was homeless, is a convicted rapist who had served his maximum sentence.

a paid vaction where he can spend time converting

is a war when is our government going to wake up
to this fact. I am not sure they will even wake

I found Judge Coughenour's commentary rather irritating:

"Secondly, though, I would like to convey the message that our system works. We did not need to use a secret military tribunal, or detain the defendant indefinitely as an enemy combatant, or deny him the right to counsel, or invoke any proceedings beyond those guaranteed by or contrary to the United States Constitution."

All well and good. But do we really need to extend constitutional protection to every terrorist as this statement suggests?

Coughenour was appointed by President Reagan and has been on the bence 24 years as he points out and this sentencing was the most difficult?

Another good reason to end lifetime appointments to the Federal bench if you ask me.

Rather irritating is to grossly understate Coughenour's little tirade. If he thinks it was difficult to try Ressam, how light would he find the responsibility of safely and securely incarcerating hundreds of formerly armed combatants from Afghanistan, including the teenaged Canadian Khadr family scion who killed a medic at point-blank range as he was being rounded up from the battlefield where his father was killed.

Judge Coughenour: most, if not all of these people are extremely dangerous fanatics who have no claim to protection under the US constitution or even the Geneva Accords and are being treated quite humanely under the circumstances.

Prisons are no fun, so the PC crowd, decided to take some of the punishment out of prison, and make it more like home away from home. No one in prison should be having any fun. Convicted terrorists especially. The only priviledges they should get are food,(prison starch), clothing,(a striped suit) and shelter (cage with a roof).
No tv, no checkers, no ping pong, no bingo games and no religion. They could pray all they want, but no Quran, rugs or any paraphranalia. Keep lawyers and prison social workers away from convicted terrorists. Their only 'entertainment is 10 hours a day of hard labor...breaking rocks...or digging meaningless holes, only to fill them up at the end of the day. A few years of that, and digging holes will be more rewarding than praying. At least it's something to do...Allah knows best...
