Since you are showing concerns about what is true and what is fiction when it comes to this serious and contemporary subject; my suggestion to you, would be to keep on reading and eventually a window of understanding of what Islam is all about will begin to open up to you. There is a never ending amount of information on the web. You need to go to Borders, or Barnes and Noble and get a copy of the Quran not only for reading but as a reference guide for what you may wish to question that has been written by other writers such as Robert Spencer who has been studying Islam for well over 25 years.
There are books that compare the surahs in the Quran to versus in the bible such as Islam and the Bible by David Goldmann. You will discover that much of what has been attributed to Mohammed's Quran, or Koran has been drawn from the New testamnet and changed to suit mohammed in the Quran. Besides Roberts books --there is The sword and the Prophetby Serge Trifkovic,and why I am not a muslim by Ibn Warraq .
Keep studying it all and draw your own conclusions as you read more and more .

They have a huge display of various Korans closer to the front. I would avoid the store entirely except that it is next to a great coffee shop.

I bought a Koran in December of 1967, but never bothered to read it, and didn't give islam much thought until 9/11. I am now awake to the danger of this world war in which we are engaged. My family is preparing for the horror that the muslims have promised us.

N. J. Dawood's Penguin translation is the most readable and accurate in English. However, Dawood was not a Muslims, so many Muslims dismiss it on that basis.
For discussion with Muslims, therefore, it is better to use the English translations of Mohammed Marmaduke Pickthall or Abdullah Yusuf Ali. Ali's in particular is a bit jimmied, and both use pseudo-King James Bible English that make their translations irritating to read, but they are generally accurate.

Do Muslims dismiss the Picthall or Ali versions for any reason, or can those translations be used, with confidence, in letters to politicians, news organizations, etc.?
