Washington and Patterson update: it began as a robbery arrest, and now has uncovered a significant jihad element inside and outside U.S. prisons. From AP, with thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist:
LOS ANGELES - The head of a militant Islamic prison gang and three others were indicted Wednesday on federal charges of planning terrorist attacks against National Guard facilities, the Israeli Consulate and other Los Angeles-area targets.The four conspired to wage war against the U.S. government through terrorism, kill armed service members and murder foreign officials, among other charges, according to the indictment.
Named in the indictment were Levar Haley Washington, 25, Gregory Vernon Patterson, 21, Hammad Riaz Samana, 21, and Kevin James, 29.
Prosecutors contend the plot was orchestrated by Washington, Patterson and Samana at the behest of James, an inmate at the California State Prison-Sacramento who founded the radical group Jamiyyat Ul-Islam Is-Saheeh.
Washington converted to Islam while serving three years in the prison for a robbery conviction.
According to the indictment, Washington pledged his loyalty to James "until death by martyrdom" and sought to establish a JIS cell outside prison with members with bomb expertise.
Washington, Patterson and Samana — who attended the same Inglewood mosque — allegedly conducted surveillance of National Guard facilities, the Israeli Consulate and several synagogues in the Los Angeles area as well as Internet research on Jewish holidays.
The attacks were to be carried out with firearms and other weapons on Jewish holidays, according to the indictment. Patterson allegedly bought a .223-caliber rifle in July.
To finance the attacks, prosecutors said, the three robbed a string of gas stations in Los Angeles and Orange counties.

The mythic remedy for such regenerating hydras will be needed for this modern monstrosity, as well:

Were these fellows the members of the oppressed minorities, who have been subjected to unbearable hardships as a result of imperialist violations of the International Law? Nope.
Yet another example serves to prove that Islamic extremism arises not as a result of some mystical, yet-to-be-defined 'oppression', but as a result of something very, very different. Do the prisoners have access to radical Islamist tapes, pamphlets and other means of propaganda. Not likely. Do they have a chance to listen to sermons, delivered by the alleged 'misunderstanders' of Islam? Nope. But they do have a chance to study the Qur'an and the Sunnah in meticulous detail while in prison, for the time allows that.
It is then up to you to decide what inspires their radicalism.

Islam, the preferred religion of Criminals. It would be interesting to know if the prison they were incarcerated in had an Islamic study center that was funded by Saudi Arabia, wouldn't it boys and girls???
Like I said before, this all started with the Malcom X thing and all the hipsters were duped into thinking that Islam was some magic pill for hardened criminals.
If you already have a criminal mind, then it is easy to use a "religion" as backing for additional criminal enterprises. I doubt if the guy in prison can even read the Koran, let alone understand its meaning. It is just an excuse to justify commiting more crimes.
I worked at the federal maximum custody prison at Leavenworth for 23 years. The muslim groups are well represented sunni, shiite, nation of islam and moorish science temple. Every year Ramadan activities happen for a month, meals before sunrise, meals after sunset etc. daily prayers in all areas friday Juma prayers, no pork menus, Korans provided free.
Contract Imams come in from the streets, even N.O.I preachers and tapes from the nation of islam/ farrakahn followers. All of the muslim holidays are celebrated. Prior to 911 we had some of the 1993 tower bombers they were all sent to florence colo. super max.
The institution used to have officers sit in on meetings and monitor speeches and sermons but that stopped around 1995 and now staffing has been cut so that they only watch the cameras to view the doors of the meeting rooms.
Mail from lawyers and private groups are not censored and they can get in most of the news and information that street people get.
