UK: Muslims accused of failing to help police

Right after the London bombings, Sir Iqbal Sacranie of the Muslim Council of Britain called on Muslims to cooperate with police. I expressed skepticism at the time, because the loyalties of Muslims to the coreligionists generally run deeper than their loyalties to secular non-Muslim states. This is a problem that Sir Iqbal has not confronted. And here we see this confirmed by the complaint of a "senior Muslim police officer": Muslims accused of failing to help police," from the Financial Times, with thanks to Filtrat:

Muslim communities are failing to help the police identify radical preachers promoting militancy and young people who are vulnerable to extremism, according to the most senior Muslim police officer. Assistant commissioner Tarique Ghaffur of the Metropolitan police, who is responsible for community policing in London, predicted it would take “several years” for Muslim communities to become engaged in wider British society.

He acknowledged Muslim communities were becoming concerned with police stop-and-search techniques, but denied there was active racial profiling taking place and defended the power as “an operational tactic”.

He also wanted powers to close down mosques known to be promoting militancy. Mr Ghaffur said although Muslim communities had been virulent in condemning the July 7 and July 21 London bombings, they had not responded to police appeals for intelligence.

In the aftermath of the July 7 attacks, Sir Ian Blair, the Met’s commissioner, called on Muslims to “find ways of identifying those preachers of hate and who they’re talking to”.

But in an interview with the Financial Times, Mr Ghaffur said: “It’s not happening.” He identified three reasons. First, communities did not know in practical terms how to help the police. Second, they were in retreat from the “hysterical and hostile” public reaction to the bombings. The third reason, Mr Ghaffur said, was that Muslim communities were unable to identify “the tipping point between right and wrong, where hate becomes a criminal offence”.

Robert, please tear this apart. I've decided Islam needs to be simplified down to the level of Mayan heiroglyphics before I have a chance of "understanding" it. I read all the books and still apperently can't catch a break.

Caroline2 was kind enough to provide this link, on another thread, that pretty much explains why muslims wont cooperate with police.

until they can discover where the "tipping point" is, i suggest they use, oh, i don't know, let me take a wild stab here and say, how about THE POINT WHERE THEY START TALKING ABOUT KILLING PEOPLE?

but i'm just guessing

Muslim communities were unable to identify “the tipping point between right and wrong, where hate becomes a criminal offence”.

Yet Tarique Ghaffur, a moslem himself, is capable (I hope) of identifing right from wrong. So it can be done.

He is also the senior officer who took the common sense view regarding 3 white officers who faced disciplinary proceedings after a moslem woman officer said they had made a racist remark. Which if I remember the story correctly was describing a particular type of Islamic hat as "like a tea cosy". Ghaffur thought it was nonsense for offence to have been taken.

And yet, there have, in fact, been some cases of Muslims cooperating with police, most notably, the mosque leader who wrote to police two years ago to issue an urgent warning about one of the 7/21 bombing suspects. Unfortunately, his warning seems to have been ignored.

LONDON, England (CNN) -- A leader at a mosque visited by one of the July 21 London bombing suspects says he warned police that Hamdi Issac was dangerous more than two years ago.

An elder at the Stockwell Mosque in southwest London says he wrote to a senior police officer urging him to help deal with a group of young people who had been "harassing" and intimidating the moderate Muslims.

The islamic"hat",commonly worn by muslim males is a handy identifier. I liken it to the pearl grey fedora worn by old time Mafiosi which always gave the authorities a heads up on who was underneath that fedora. The description of the muslim cap as "like a tea cozy" is a terrible insult to such a quaint and gentle British tradition and the author of that remark should be punished by being forced to listen to islamic calls to prayer over a loudspeaker for 72 hours.

They sure as hell don't have any problem contacting the authorities when they think thier rights have been violated.
If a bunch of Christians blew up a mosque you can bet they'd find thier voice in short order. The tips would roll in like they were voting for American Idol.

Not only are they cowards, but they keep telling us they are cowards.

Those who make statements such as resc's, taking all muslims to be equally villainous, ought to notice that the police officer who complained about lack of collaboration is... a Muslim. A few contributors on this site need reminding that Muslims are human beings, not some sort of demonic bacilli to be treated with disinfectant.

The Gestapo,NKVD,SS,KKK,Mau Mau,ad nauseum, were all human beings. Should they be treated with respect because they are upright primates or do they need to earn respect by displaying the decency they would want from others of all faiths and races? Please don't look down your holier than thou nose at those who are angry and for a damn good reason. The Nazis were actually ashamed of their crimes and tried to conceal them. They did not make videos of their crimes to show the world with a perverted sense of pride. Human beings worthy of the name don't do a little tribal dance at the sight of their fellow humans jumping from a building to escape being roasted alive. If someone on this site doesn't like my anger ,or anyone elses for that matter, they will just need to live with it.
