Assad is not a conventional jihadist or even, as an Alawite, a conventional Muslim; however, for various reasons today he has to make clear where his sympathies lie. From Haaretz, with thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist:
Syrian President Bashar Assad earlier this month gave Hamas and Islamic Jihad representatives in Damascus a green light to carry out terror attacks and escalate fighting against Israel, Israel Radio said Wednesday, quoting a high-level Palestinian Authority intelligence dispatch, which was reportedly passed on to Egypt and Israel.Deputy Defense Minister Ze'ev Boim said Wednesday that Israel was aquainted with the dispatch.
Boim, referring to U.S. and international pressure on Syria over events in Iraq and the alleged involvement of Damascus in the assassination of investigation of alleged Syrian involvement in the assassination of former Lebanese leader Rafik Hariri, told the radio:
"Assad in Damascus is very pressured, in a state of distress, and as a result, he is trying apparently to step us his support [of Hamas and Jihad attacks] in order to lift pressure from other fronts," Boim said.
Hamas releases Zarqawi-style CD Rom of kidnapped Israeli Sasson Nuriel before his murder.
September 27, 2005, 5:37 PM (GMT+02:00)
Nuriel is shown blindfolded, talking to his captors against the background of a large green Hamas flag. They claim that minutes before he was killed he confessed to being a Shin Beit agent against the Palestinians. They also display his driving license. Hamas-Ramallah introduces its special unit for the “release of prisoners” which it claims abducted Nuriel, father of three, aged 50, last Wednesday, Sept. 21, in Jerusalem. The late businessman lived in Pisgat Zeev in northern Jerusalem.
The CD Rom is of poor quality and appears to have been made in haste, possibly because Israeli forces were hunting for the missing man in the vicinity of their hideout.
Israeli defense minister Shaul Mofaz made no reference to the murder and abduction during his tour Tuesday, Sept. 27, of Israeli positions ringing the Gaza Strip.

Why isn't boy Assad snapped up and hung out to dry ?
If he isn't with us, why isn't he toppled ?
He should be joining the House of Saud IN HELL.
I'm usually very skeptical about any analysis by the BBC, but I thought this article on the BBC's website was interesting.

sbrst:
thanks for the link. it is an interesting piece. possibly the Beeb is getting a little nervous about being seen to have, all these years, defended Islamists on the basis that they were struggling against an oppressive colonial force, only to find out that they are religious fanatics who endanger themselves in pursuit of ethnically cleansing the Middle East of Christians as well as Jews.
On the other hand, who needs Al-Jazeerah when you have AP reporter Sara El-Deeb to provide an account of events in Gaza:
AP's "Circle Dance"
By HonestReporting.com
HonestReporting.com | September 28, 2005
On Friday and Saturday (Sept. 23-24), Hamas fired 40 rockets from Gaza onto the southern Israeli town of Sderot, wounding five civilians. In covering the Israeli response to the rockets, Associated Press reporter Sara El Deeb filed two Sept. 25 dispatches that raised media monitors' eyebrows:
œ El Deeb's 12:06 PM article contained this description of an IDF celebration:
... in an unprecedented step, Israel set up five artillery pieces on the border, and fired test-rounds into empty fields in northern Gaza in preparation for a possible artillery strike, causing no injuries. The Israeli soldiers danced in a circle after firing the artillery and sang a biblical song of revenge.
To anyone familiar with the professionalism of the IDF, this scene of a bloodthirsty 'circle dance' appears highly unlikely. Upon reporting such an unusual event, standard journalistic practice prescribes stating a reliable source, which El Deeb did not do.
HonestReporting contacted AP editors to request some corroboration of El Deeb's claim, but as of this posting, none has arrived.
œ An earlier 9/25 El Deeb article blamed the Israeli response to the Hamas rocket salvo for ruining a supposed 'ceasefire':
The new [Israeli] offensive dubbed 'Operation First Rain' dashed hopes that Israel's recently completed Gaza withdrawal would help restart peace talks and left a seven-month-old cease-fire teetering on the brink of collapse.
Whose offensive 'dashed hopes' of positive change?! And how exactly were 40 Hamas rockets fired during a 'ceasefire'?
Join our enquiry to El Deeb's 'circle dance' claim, and her reversal of chronology and responsibility for the recent Gaza violence, by sending comments to: feedback@ap.org
If your local paper carried either of these AP articles, HonestReporting encourages you to send a letter to your editor as well.

Thank you for your ongoing involvement in the battle against media bias.
Maybe if Sharon gives away the Golan to Assad they will play nicely like the moslems in New Judenrein Gaza. Surely another capitulation to islam will bring peace to the Land, right?

Some heartening words yesterday from the Israeli Defense Minister:
"Until there is quiet, terrorist organizations will know no quiet. If (Hamas leaders) Mahmoud al-Zahar or Ismail Haniyah or others continue
with rocket fire, we will send them to the same place as Rantissi and Yassin"
Now, of course the Israelis, like the rest of us, know that resistance to the jihad is futile, will only make them angrier, blah, blah, blah. But maybe they are thinking "what the hell, let's give it a go anyway" I like that.
Infidel33,
Your comments are right on. There is always a circular logic when dealing with Hamas. Hamas says "We are going to fire missiles at Israel. And if Israel tries to stop up, we are going to fire missiles at Israel." Hamas threatens to do what it is doing anyway. I'm glad the Israeli Defense Minister sees through this charade. It's too bad the Europeans and the U.S. State Department don't
Gotta think the Beeb is so compromised, given their hurl inspiring reporters amongst the "palestinians", that they'll still be producing drivel even as the Jihadists tiptoe behind them to slit their throats.
