More rockets will fly out of Gaza, says Sami Abu Zahri. Good thing Peace In Our Time has been established there, eh? "Hamas vows more attacks; Terror leader taunts Israel for vulnerability to rockets," from WND, with thanks to Jeffrey Imm:
JERUSALEM – In an exclusive interview with WorldNetDaily yesterday, Hamas senior spokesman Sami Abu Zahri taunted Israel for its vulnerability to rocket attacks and warned that the terrorist group plans to kidnap more Israeli citizens just days after it claimed responsibility for the abduction and murder of a Jerusalem resident.Zahri also told WND Hamas maintains "good relationships" with Syrian President Bashar Assad and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.
"Our relations are good with all the honest forces in the Arab world and this includes Assad's Syria, Hezbollah and other movements and forces," Zuhri said in the interview, which will be released in full on WND this weekend.
Zahri claimed Israel does not have the military capability to stop Hamas' Qassam rockets from flying out of Gaza and hitting nearby Jewish communities.
"Israel has always tried to stop Qassam attacks and she always failed to do so, even while using the most sophisticated technological and military tools. ... Hamas succeeded in creating a new military equation against Israel."
That's because Israel has been HOLDING BACK on unleashing the full force of her military, you maroon.
Have you noticed that the UK didn't take your side this time around? Nor did the US. That's a warning, in case you missed the point.
These people are terminally "stuck on stupid".
For several years before construction of the “security fence” began, I predicted that Israel would unilaterally erect a de facto border between itself and the Palestinian territories. When the barrier was completed I further predicted that Israel would be the first UN member to announce its recognition of the Palestinian state. On this latter point I may be proven wrong, but the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, ipso facto, creates a self-determined Palestinian state.
If true, any violence projected from Palestine to Israel may be accorded the characterization under international law of conflict as a foreign military invasion. Article 51 of the United Nations Charter then becomes the umbrella for the Israeli use of whatever force it deems necessary to secure its territory. If the Palestinian belligerents do not adhere to the international laws of conflict, they shall not be entitled to consideration under the Geneva protocols and her leadership shall be subject to treatment as war criminals. With impunity provided by the UN Charter, Israel will have the internationally recognized right to respond to any attacks launched from the de facto state of Palestine with enough firepower to erase whole towns and villages in the territory of the belligerent state if Israel believes that is necessary to suppress the attacks.
So if the Palestinians want a state to call their own, they will have to accept the full responsibility of statehood and the consequences of international law of conflict if its leaders or citizens violate it.
"Zahri claimed Israel does not have the military capability to stop Hamas' Qassam rockets from flying out of Gaza and hitting nearby Jewish communities."
And Hamas does not have the military capability to refrain from blowing themselves up, as they did a few days ago in Gaza. Hamas tried to blame Israel for its "work accident" and fired rockets into Israel. Israel responded by bombing the hell out of Gaza and killing Hamas members. There is a lesson there, but as Treehugger said, Hamas seems incapable of learning it.
Abduction and murder of Israeli citizens will be problematic for Israel. However, they had no problem identifying and tracking down the perpetrators. Seems that Israel will again have to concentrate on eliminating the leaders of hamas, even if the yellow cowards are hiding (no doubt among women and children) in Teheran or Damascas. They claim they love death, but sure go to extraordinary lengths to avoid what they love.
Israel does not have the ability to stop one of these rockets in the air. However we do have the ability to fire back. And unlike Hamas's little rockets the Israeli Artillery batteries (and air force) can hit what they are aiming at.
Most of these rockets land in empty fields and the like. Ok having a bomb land in a field is a pain, as you generally have to call the bomb squad out to get rid of it, but its hardly a major problem.
In Germany during the Second World War, unarmed Jews walked helplessly into the ovens and gas chambers. Jews say “Never Again” often enough, but the big question of this century is: Will fully armed Jews continue to paint themselves into a smaller and smaller box, walking carefully but deliberately towards slaughter? The Israeli government's removal of its own citizens from Gaza will go down in history as either a suicidal error of huge proportions, or a tactical political/military move serving the survival of the country, depending on how Israel now responds to the coming provocations of its new defacto neighbor-state, Palestine. The retreat under fire from Gaza cannot but encourage more terrorism, because the Israeli retreat has sent an unambiguous signal: Terrorism works. Terrorist groups like Hizbollah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad have made it clear their campaign to destroy Israel will continue unabated. Even PLO leaders have declared their intent to continue tried and true methods of violence to rid Jerusalem and the entire West Bank of Jews. The military retreat is seen by passionate Palestinian Islamists as a signal that Israel is weak and ready to be pursued and destroyed. The withdrawal from Gaza and parts of the West Bank will soon enough be followed by a terrorist push to cause even greater harm. Considering Sharon’s earlier statements and policies, surely one assumes he must understand this.
In 2003 Sharon defeated Labor party candidate Amram Mitzna. At the time Sharon ridiculed Amram for advocating unilateral withdrawal from Gaza, declaring then: "A unilateral withdrawal is not a recipe for peace. It is a recipe for war." Later that year he did an apparent Kerry flip-flop articulating a nonnegotiable policy of abandoning Gaza. To many, this represents betrayal of core principals of Zionism. Whether this is in fact a betrayal, or Sharon simply accepting the inevitability of war and positioning Israel to fight an unavoidable battle with the Palestinian militants, is anybody’s guess at this point. Sharon has promised to respond to any violence with greater force after the withdrawal, which is the only encouraging sign that the man has not lost it. Unfortunately, there are even more signs that Sharon does not always act in militarily cognizant ways. In a clear tactical error, Sharon exchanged 429 living terrorists and 59 dead ones for one captured Israeli civilian and the remains of three soldiers in Feb 2004. Not to mention the unilateral withdrawal from Lebanon five years ago. The results of these actions were: a) more Israeli deaths as many of the release criminals returned to their terrorist ways, and b) Hizbollah committed unspeakable atrocities on Israel’s former Lebanese Christian allies and deployed huge numbers of rockets aimed at northern and central cities. Does Sharon know what he is doing? It is hard to guess.
The only way Sharon’s evacuation could possibly work to stop Muslim terrorists is if Israel backs up the Gaza giveaway by loading up the Israeli side of the security barrier with missiles and artillery, and to fire multiple warheads into population centers for every rocket coming over the other way, and lob even more shells for every terrorist act inside Israel, …until all Palestinian barrages stop. But somehow that seems out of character for Israel. Currently only Palestinians are employing brutal but effective methods of 'Total War', while Jews are employing 'measured responses' (which is why the Muslims have no motivation to stop). As such, the current equation of war is solidly against the long term survival of Israeli Jews. It is not altogether clear that Sharon understands this, so one cannot be sure if he is a fool or not. If he is positioning for all out war, then the man is no fool, as all out war may well be the only practical solution remaining considering the increasing number and range of Hezbollah rockets in Lebanon, future Palestinian armaments, and Iranian missiles (Palestine will soon enough get a major sea port in Gaza with unfettered access to support by sea, to go along with virtual free land access via Egypt).
Yes, these Hamas boys are really bright, but then they weren't the ones trying to lobby the EU types in Ramallah and other parts of the West Bank looking for sympathy re: IDF retaliatory measures last fall only to be told to go away and stop the attacks on women and babies.
I guess the burdens of government circa this milenia are also a little foreign to the jihad-minded.
OT, but possibly an interesting factoid for Canadian bloggers courtesy of this week's Canadian Jewish News. Gaza was one of the first places certified as free from measles because of the work of a Canadian-born doctor, Ted Tulchinsky, who married the late TC Douglas's other daughter, Joan. (Didn't know there was a daughter other than Shirley the actress and political activist for health care.) Joan Douglas converted to Judaism and moved to Israel with her parents' blessings and served as a nurse in a Hadassah hospital until her retirement.

I really do wonder if there will be any people at all living in the Gaza Strip in say, 18 months time.

Saddam promises more bounties for suicide bombers in Rather interview
In a much publicized second interview with CBS’s Dan Rather, Iraqi’s President Saddam Hussein insisted that continual American pressure had little effect. “Look at Afghanistan. Here it is almost October 2005, and America is still fighting the Taliban, so I don’t think they will dare come to our Iraq. But we are ready to be martyred nonetheless.”
The Iraqi president who was hosting Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas also denied rumors that Iraqi agents had attempted to assassinate former President Bill Clinton. On recent disclosures of a plot against him, President Clinton left nearby Kuwait, where he had lectured his hosts on the dangers of WMD proliferation in Iraq.

DrMack said "Article 51 of the United Nations Charter then becomes the umbrella for the Israeli use of whatever force it deems necessary..."
I wish I shared your optimism that the UN could act as a force for defending Israel from attack. Unfortunately, their history shows that the opposite is more likely. Before the Gaza withdrawal, Israel was condemned for responding to missile attacks against her. After the Gaza withdrawal, Israel is still condemned for responding to missile attacks.
The only change that occurred as a result of the Gaza withdrawal is that Israel now has a smaller territory, and the jihadists now have a better position for firing missiles further into what is left of Israel.
I disagree, I communicate daily with a large number of internation people online, the more attacks from "radical" islam they see, the more willing they are to change their opinions about islam and jihad.
The pullout from Gaza is the same deal, before it was all talks "we'll stop shooting at you if you stop shooting at us." Now Israel has done something substantial and concrete, and the world cannot and is not ignoring that. World opinion is changing, slowly, but it is.
islamundressed writes: Currently only Palestinians are employing brutal but effective methods of 'Total War', while Jews are employing 'measured responses' (which is why the Muslims have no motivation to stop). Right on! One cannot afford to play Mr. Nice Guy with an enemy that has always been, and continues to be, unwilling to abide by any international rules and regulations. The U.N., if it had any integrity, would have long back passed sanctions against the Arab nations for their absolute unwillingness to comply with international norms of behavior. Instead, it has given tacit approval to the jehadists by its stance of 'moral equivalence' towards the jehadist terrorist actions and the legitimate Israeli reactionary strikes. Its high time the USA and other nations stood up and gave FULL support to Israel instead of forever asking it to grant one concession after another to the jehadists.
I agree with special_guest vis a vis the UN. Being numerically dominated by Muslim countries joined with "non-aligned" countries such as China, Israel has been unfairly condemned at least since the infamous "Zionism is racism" resolution of the mid-1970s.
NATO, though, is another matter, and, frankly, I think NATO is a more powerful body.

The Marines have been involved in some of the most important battles in the history of the United States and the World. The following are some of the most notable ones, and descriptions of the Marines role in the battle.
Tripoli 1805 - Marines assemble a fleet to Derna, Tripoli to put down Barbary Coast pirates taking a toll on American merchant ships in the Mediterranean. Lieutenant Presley O'Bannon and his Marines marched across 600 miles of North Africa's Libyan Desert to successfully storm the fortified tripolitan City of Derna. Marines today sing about the victory in the second line of their hymn: "to the shores of Tripoli."

On August 1, 1801, within one month of arriving in the Mediterranean, the Enterprise was engaged in its first action. As a ruse, the Enterprise was flying the British Union Jack as it approached the corsair vessel Tripoli.
Hailing the Tripoli, Sterrett asked what business had brought her to sea. The enemy commander replied that he was hunting Americans but had not, alas, been able to find any. Down went the Enterprise's British flag, up went the American colors, and Sterrett's men fired their muskets across the Tripolitan deck; the Tripoli answered with a ragged broadside

In one especially daring episode, early in June 1803, the Enterprise sighted a dozen grain-carrying ships trying to sneak into Tripoli harbor and chased them into a bay west of the city. On June 11, a group of 50 seamen from the Enterprise and other ships in the American squadron, led by Lt. David Porter of the USS New York and Lt. James Lawrence of the Enterprise, went ashore to set fire to the grain boats.
The 50 Americans were met by an army of Tripolitans that [Commodore] Morris estimated at nearly 1,000.... It was a pell-mell battle, but despite the heavy odds, the Americans gradually fought their way up the beach.... [Lt. Porter] kept his small force concentrated on the beach head only long enough for the men in the fire boats to ignite the grain boats. Then he called for retreat, and got nearly all his men back into their boats before he was hit simultaneously in both legs. Crawling into one of the boats, he continued to direct the retreat until he became too weak from loss of blood and called to Lt. Lawrence to take over. Under a hail of bullets the boats raced back to the [American] ships, the sailors and marines watching in satisfaction as the grain boats burned fiercely behind them.18

On the night of February 16, 1804, the Intrepid, with Decatur in command and manned by 60 men from the Enterprise and seven men from other American ships, sailed into the harbor of Tripoli. As they approached the Philadelphia, a breeze sent the Intrepid directly in front of the larger ship's gun batteries. But, they successfully tricked the Tripolitan seamen aboard the Philadelphia into thinking that the Intrepid was still under Tripolitan control, and were soon tied up next to the Philadelphia. Decatur and his men then jumped aboard the Philadelphia, swords in hand. According to one report on the incident:
The sleepy Tripolitans never expected a gang of howling Americans to appear in the midst of a harbor protected by a massive fortress. Many of the Tripolitans simply leaped overboard; others fled below to the orlop deck; the rest were quickly cut down.... Fires were started in every corner of the ship, and the flames began to lick up into the tarred rigging. Decatur was the last man off -- in a flying leap into the rigging of the Intrepid.... When [the Philadelphia] was just under the [Bashaw's] castle, the fire finally reached her magazine and she exploded with an immense thunderclap that reverberated over the town and showered its inhabitants with blazing remnants

The Answer to Terrorism? Colonialism.
READ THE WHOLE THING?
By the end of the 18th century, the rulers of Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli had become notorious for harboring pirates and themselves engaging in piracy and the slave-trade in whites (chiefly captured seamen).
European states found it convenient to ransom these unfortunates rather than go to war. Admiral Nelson, commanding the British Mediterranean Fleet, was forbidden to carry out reprisals. "My blood boils," he wrote, "that I cannot chastise these pirates."
By contrast, the U.S. was determined to do so. Pirates were the main reason Congress established a navy in 1794. In 1805, American marines marched across the desert from Egypt, forcing the pasha of Tripoli to sue for peace and surrender all American captives -- an exploit recalled by the U.S. Marine Corps anthem: "From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli."
It was reinforced in 1815 when Commodores Stephen Decatur and William Bainbridge conducted successful operations against all three of the Barbary States, as they were called.
This shamed the British into taking action themselves, and the following year Admiral Lord Exmouth subjected Algiers to what was then the fiercest naval bombardment in history -- 38,667 rounds of cannon balls, 960 large-caliber shells and hundreds of rockets. However, these victories were ephemeral. The beys repudiated the treaties they were obliged to sign as soon as American and British ships were over the horizon.
It was the French who took the logical step, in 1830, not only of storming Algiers but of conquering the entire country. France eventually turned Algeria into part of metropolitan France and settled one million colonists there. It solved the Tunis piracy problem by turning Tunisia into a protectorate, a model it later followed in Morocco. Spain, too, digested bits of the Barbary Coast, followed by Italy, which overthrew the pasha of Tripoli and created Libya. Tangiers, another nuisance, was ruled by a four-power European commission.
The eventual decolonization of North Africa was a messy and bloody business. In Algeria in particular, which the French had ruled for over 120 years, they withdrew only after a horrific war that produced over a million casualties and overthrew the Fourth Republic. The Italian record in Libya was so bad that its memory was a key factor in Col. Moammar Gadhafi's seizure of power and the resumption of outlaw activities.

In 1815 Britain had to take action because ships of its East India Company were being attacked in international waters. But it did so only in conjunction with two powerful allies, the ruler of Muscat and Oman, still Britain's firm friend, and Mohamed Ali of Egypt.
British naval operations produced a general treaty against piracy signed by all the rulers, great and small, of the Arabian Coast and Persian Gulf. But Britain had learned from experience that "covenants without swords" were useless, and that the sheikhs would only stick to their treaty obligations if "enforcement bases" were set up.
Hence Britain found itself becoming a major power in the Middle East, with a colony and base in Aden, other bases up and down the Gulf, and a network of treaties and protectorates with local rulers, whose heirs were educated at the British school of princes in India.

The United States and the Barbary Pirates
The American Revolution was barely over before the United States faced its first foreign policy test. What should the United States do about North African pirate states that plundered American shipping?
On September 11, 2001, terrorists struck the United States, killing about 4,000 people. The U.S. president responded by declaring a war on terrorism. He got Congress to authorize using force against any nation, organization, or person involved in the attack or against any nation harboring the terrorist organizations.
When the United States began, it faced another foreign policy test: How should it respond to the Barbary pirates who were plundering its ships?
WE CAN NOT FORGET OUR HISTORY AND MUST STAND AND FIGHT AS OUR FORFATHERS DID FOR FREEDOM!!!

The Barbary pirates were mostly Berbers, Arabs, and other Muslims, but some came from Christian Europe. The pirates used small, fast-moving vessels to capture trading ships and their cargoes. They held the crews and passengers for ransom or sold them as slaves.
AGAIN READ THE WHOLE THING?
Each of the four Barbary States had its own ruler. He was usually a military strongman who had grabbed the throne by assassinating the ruler or murdering rival family members.
In 1662, England made the first treaty with a Barbary ruler. This set the pattern for similar treaties by other European nations trading in the Mediterranean. Typically, a Barbary peace treaty required a nation to pay "tribute" to the pirate ruler, who would then call off attacks on the nation's ships. Tribute usually took the form of a large payment of money plus annual payments. The annual payments might be cash, military supplies, or expensive presents for the ruler. A particular treaty might also include ransom money for the release of a nation's citizens held captive by the Barbary country.

About a year later, Dey Omar wrote to President Madison, proposing a renewal of the tribute treaty the United States had signed with Algiers in 1796. Madison wrote back that "the United States, whilst they wish for war with no nation, will buy peace with none." He concluded that it was the "settled policy" of the United States "that as peace is better than war, war is better than tribute."
