Does King Abdullah of Jordan really want to mend fences with Jews? He was in Washington the other day saying all the right things in just the right tones. "Jordan's king reaches out to Jews, hits radical Islam," from the Washington Times:
Jordan's King Abdullah II told a gathering of American rabbis yesterday that Jews and Muslims are irrevocably "tied together by culture and history" and that he is willing to take radical measures to combat Muslim extremists."We face a common threat: extremist distortions of religion and the wanton acts of violence that derive therefrom," the king said. "Such abominations have already divided us from without for far too long."
Criticizing al Qaeda terrorists Osama bin Laden and Abu Musab Zarqawi for "abuses of our faith," the king, speaking at a heavily guarded lunch meeting at the Ritz-Carlton in Northwest, made clear he wishes to establish himself as the voice of moderate Islam.
He pointed to a July conference he held in Amman, Jordan, for 180 Muslim scholars as a key part of his effort to undermine the far Islamic right. The conference was supported by fatwas -- or legal rulings -- from 17 major Islamic scholars.
"Muslims from every branch of Islam can now assert without doubt or hesitation," he said, "that a fatwa calling for the killing of innocent civilians -- no matter what nationality or religion, Muslim or Jew, Arab or Israeli -- is a basic violation of the most fundamental principles of Islam."
Now, King Abdullah said, it's time to mend fences with the worldwide Jewish community.
Okay, Your Majesty, here's a place to start:
At home, however, the king encounters massive anti-Semitism. According to a July poll by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press on global attitudes toward religious groups, 100 percent of Jordanian respondents said they either had a "very unfavorable" or "somewhat unfavorable" view of Jews.
But there is much more. Andrew Bostom, who has compiled the important sourcebook The Legacy of Jihad, has sent me this illuminating material from Jordanian law. If Abdullah's conciliatory noises are really genuine, why doesn't he repeal these laws?
Only a non-Jew is entitled to Jordanian citizenship, as per Section 3(3) of the Jordanian Nationality Law, No. 6 of 1954 (Official Gazette, No. 1171 of February 16, 1954, p. 105). The subsection is numbered (2) in an amendment that appeared in the Official Gazette, No. 1675 of April 1, 1963, p. 270. No further amendment is known...since King Hussein declared his "abandonment" of the West Bank on August 7, 1988, nor since the 1994 peace treaty with Israel.Further anti-Jewish discrimination appears in order No. 1282 of July 1, 1957 (attributed to the Jordan Official Gazette, No. 1282 by the Collection of Laws and Regulations [in Arabic], issued by the Jordanian Bar, Amman, Vol.1, 1957, p. 186). It exempts Syrian nationals from showing their passports on entering or leaving Jordan. They may use any identifying document, provided that 'they are not Jews'.
That's from Ya'kov Meron, "The Expulsion of the Jews from the Arab Countries: The Palestinians Attitude Towards It and Their Claims", in The Forgotten Millions--The Modern Jewish Exodus from Arab Lands, edited by Malka Shulewitz, Continuum, London/New York, 1999, p. 94, and footnote 81, p. 119.
Dhimmi (Jewish and Christian) history in the Middle East is nothing short of atrocious, especially in the modern (1800 AD+) period.
The facts are clear and undeniable. Mohammed himself even said that Jews are untrustworthy (see Sahih Muslim hadeeth #4119-4129), and thus are naturally inclined to being traitors.
Additionally, Mohammed actually called for the expulsion of all Christians and Jews from Arabia, saying that "there will be nobody but Moslems left" (see Sahih Muslim hadeeth #4363-4367).
Considering these early texts, history, and modern times (which I won't even get into), there is a long history of violence against "People of the Book", and this is intolerable.
Commendable are the Kings outward intentions, but I question the sincerity of his words and the willingness of the people to change their views, especially given history.
It's the Islamic version of that marketing slogan "reach out and touch someone--"
"Reach out and clobber someone (The Jews)."
And Dhimmmi US doles out 2 bil of tax payer (who are targeted by CAIR, ACLU and Osama) to Zarquawi's home Jordan, every year. Go figure!
