Carrie Nation comes to Kashmir. Islamic tolerance update: they sprayed paint on women who did not wear the veil. From BBC News, with thanks to Vikrant:
The all-women vice squad opposes liquor and prostitution Eight veiled women gather outside a shop selling alcohol on the ground floor of a hotel in Srinagar, in Indian-administered Kashmir and start ransacking it.They chant Islamic slogans.
One of them lights a match to set the shop on fire but is stopped by others for fear that the fire might engulf the entire complex.
The women comprise the Maryam Squad of the Dukhtaran-e-Milat (Daughters of the Nation).
The squad is named after the Virgin Mary.
The chief of Dukhtaran-e-Milat, Asiya Andrabi, herself leads the squad.
Ms Andrabi is a well-known separatist leader who spent a year in jail with her then breastfeeding child.
"According to the Koran, liquor is the mother of all vices. We have been requested by the local residents to destroy this liquor shop here," she says.
A crowd that watched the women smash liquor bottles, endorsed her claim.
"It has affected our children. We told [the chief minister] Mufti not to open this shop here. But we were told it is a sign of normalcy returning to the state," one person said.
Another man said: "These women have taken a bold step. We'll support them."
'Illegal' attacks
There was no sign of the police while the women smashed the bottles of alcohol....
The Dukhtaran-e-Milat launched a campaign for the wearing of the burqa (veil) by Muslim women in the early 1990s.
Its activists sprayed paint on women who did not wear a burqa.
The campaign succeeded but its success was short-lived.
A large majority of women have abandoned the veil.
I guess this answers a question I posed elsewhere yesterday; "Why yes, you CAN goosestep while wearing a burkha!"
Typical BBC,
look at how they make a big fuss over DeM's campaign
against prostitution and alcoholism. BTW their definition of a prostitute differs from general one.
Moreover there are more civilised ways to protest in a democratic country like India. They arent fighting Alcoholism becoz its bad but becoz Koran prohibits it... i feel sorry 4 these women
The "Mary Squad".
Yes, I'm certain that Mary, mother of Jesus, would have encouraged the harassment of women and the burning of those who opposed a 'prophet' who came 600 years after her son and had nothing whatever to do with him.
Yup. Clear connection. Like mud.
Prophet Geoff
As a Christian woman, any reference to Mary by these vile and violent creatures sickens.
Alcohol consumption by human is eternal and universal. Alcohol is available and consumed in all of the contemporary societies including those ruled strictly by Shariat laws. Similarly prostitution is the oldest profession and being practised in every society. In Iran, later has increased many folds, after Shariat laws were enforced. Credit goes to ruling mullahs. Alcohol consumption except social one, should be discouraged. Prostitution has and will survive because men want it. Only option left is to educate, and discourage the men. What D e M were trying to show that solution to these problem is Islamic as if they are caused by the Kafirs and Western civilization. Polygamy of four wives is nothing but legalized prostitution whre so called wives are in fact enslaved, life long prostitutes. Charity begins at home. D e M should try to remove this legalised prostitution first. Vikrant, democracy and Islam are polar apart and democracy corrupts islam.Civilized behaviour is only that which is told in Koran and practised by Mohammad(Sunnah) like killings of innocents, Jizia, slavery and so on.
This proves that the only way islam can be implemented is by intimidation and violence. What is wrong with these people ?!!!
Named for the Virgin Mary who paved the way for our Lord to perform his first miracle, that of turning water into wine (superior wine at that) at the wedding in Cana.
Iqbal,
I'm not against alcohol i'm against alcoholism. But this isnt the place to discuss it. For these women a girl holding a boys hand becomes a slut.

BBC is so habituated to putting anything Indians day in quotes that they even go to the point of justifying ransacking of a liquor shop.
BTW I belive BBC guys put that Virgin Mary thingy just to evoke Christian sympathy. Dukhtaran-e-Millat loosely translates into "Daughters (Bitches) of the Nation"
