When FBI agents walked into Mahmoud Maawad's spartan apartment at 3557 Mynders # 5 on Sept. 9, they found a desk, chair, computer and a Koran.They also found an airline pilot's uniform, a chart of Memphis International Airport, and instructional DVDs, including one called "How an Airline Captain Should Look and Act."
A federal magistrate Thursday ordered Maawad, a 29-year-old University of Memphis student from Egypt, jailed until his trial on charges of wire fraud and fraudulent use of a Social Security number."The specific facts and circumstances are scary," Asst. U.S. Atty. Steve Parker said, arguing against Maawad's release.
Since Maawad can't get a Social Security number, "he can't get a pilot's license, and can't go to flight school," Parker said. "But he wants to get behind the wheel of an aircraft."
Parker said "we don't know either way" if Maawad is a terrorist or connected to any terror groups.
U.S. Magistrate Judge S. Thomas Anderson ruled that Maawad be held without bond.

I watched a documentary called Inside 9/11 last night. It showed how these quiet, mild-mannered future mass murderers went about preparing for their atrocious deed. And how it took many months, even years of preparation, from the initial idea to its fruition. When it ended, I wondered to myself 'how many more of these creeps are in the US, or wherever, going about a similar planning phase to do a similar attack?'.
Maybe this Maawad was one of a group like the 9/11 murderers. Maybe there are many such groups. Living quietly, under the radar, plotting and planning. And since the documentary didn't give the FBI high marks for reaction to all the warning signals, it gives me an uneasy feeling. Particularly since we've had the FBI go to workshops on how to deal with Muslims sensitively.

Can you really try and tell me that there's ANY chance ANYONE is going to let a 29 year old arab male in a pilots uniform BULLSH!T his way behind the controls of a plane, with or without help, ANYWHERE on Earth? Even they're not that stupid, rather they know full well that planes as bombs won't be very successful these days, everyone is watching airports. They're going to come right out of left field next time. If this guy is really connected to anyone, he's a probe or a diversion to make sure we keep watching the wrong place.

The really concerning part of this story is not printed in JW. The company that sent him these DVD materials reported this mooselum to the authorities only AFTER he failed to pay $2,500 he owed. Makes you wonder what kind of dumb shits we have in America that will send these kinds of materials to someone whose name obviously suggest they are mooselum. There is no way this bastard has any good intentions with this material. When in the hell is my country going to wake up to these worthless bastards and get them the hell out of this country....one way or another makes no difference to me.

Last night, I doublechecked the article's placement on Washington Post and New York Times online.
Was it on Washington Post's main page? No. It wasn't deemed more important than biased articles with the headlines such as "Bush says spending cuts will be needed", or "FEMA's city of anxiety in Fla." Nor was it even in any of the subheadings under the section names lower down on the page. Surely, I thought, it would be on the national news page, at least. It was, but much lower down, with a non-attention-catching title "Student Arrested After Pilot Uniform Found". Certainly it didn't warrant the attention-getting placement of the top two articles on the page, which were entitled "Bush Rules Out Tax Increase to Fund Relief" and "Study: Half of All Teens Have Had Oral Sex." It didn't even warrant placement higher than California's ban on soda in schools. It is placed in a similar position on NYTimes.com. Only it is off in the separate "News from the AP" section...not even on the National news page.
I doublechecked this morning...and sure enough, it wasn't on the front pages. It wasn't even on the national pages. It didn't even make it to Washington Post's national security pages (instead, one of their main stories was "Bush's Approval Rating at New Low").
