I doubt whether anybdy who've been following Indian politics would b surprised. This guy Lalu Yadav is a Minister in the ruiling UPA. Hes been held a "champion of secularism" in India. In Indian context secularism boils down to minoritism for Muslim votes.
P.S Bihar is one of India's most populous,backward and corrupt states. Its has 25% Muslim population and it is this vote bank that decides who rules Bihar. Mr.Paswan of LJP, nother "secularist" from UPA camp has promised a Muslim Cheif Minister for Bihar if his party is voted to power.
Unfortunately the Dhimminess in Indian politics is not limited to Bihar, it is rampant all across the country. The latest news is that the Central government is likely to recognize Islamic madrasas degrees. See:

Why are Indians in power so solicitous of Islam? Why do so many educated Hindus, who are mostly agnostics, have no interest in analyzing what Islam is all about, or what damage it inflicted on India? Why do they not at least give Naipaul a more respectful hearing? Why do some of them -for example Pankaj Mishra, a Hindu whose recent large advance was embarrassingly never made back -- attack Salman Rushdie, but for the worng reasons. He deserves attack, for his deplorable, and overheated writing, but when Mishra attacks Rushdie not only for that, but for being unfair to Islam, when Rushdie is if anything far too fair to Islam, still protecting it even as he attacks this or that version of it, he is exhibiting the kind of taking-the-other-fellow's-side-in-a-quarrel that Robert Frost once referred to as his definition of a "liberal"; the same kind of crazed attitude that many in Israel, who do not know their own history, or their own rights, also exhibit.
When intelligent Hindus stop sneering at Hindu masses, stop distancing themselves from the BJP, and begin to read, rather than merely denounce, Sita Ram Goel and others they identify with a fanatical Hindutva that at its most fanatical is still nothing compared to the most tolerant and advanced version of Islam, then possibly India will be able to save itself. But so many Indians, especially those seeking the approval of people in London or New York, think Hindutva must be mocked, and Muslims supported. This is dangerous -- to India, and to the rest of the Infidel world. Hugh, I've asked myself the same question umpteen times. Unfortunately, I have no real answers for your questions and can only speculate that centuries of dhimmitude must make our brains mushy somewhat. There is an excellent book that touches upon this subject by a fellow from Belgium, Koenraad Elst, called "Negationism in India" (http://voiceofdharma.com/books/negaind/). Note: The negationism that is being referred to is not that of the Jewish Holocaust, but of the sordid history of Islam in India, which has been completely white-washed from Indian textbooks. Fortunately, the awful history of these Islamic conquests still exists thanks to the glowing accounts by muslim chroniclers themselves.

He attended funeral of Yasser Arafat to please Muslims.It was the duty of Ministry of external affairs but anyone can represent Union of India, so why not Laloo P. Yadav, a Railway Minister? He has issued several statements on Arafat in his political career without concerning much for Palestinians but with an eye on Bihari Muslims. He visited Pakistan twice, not to keep any good relation with Pakistan but good relation with Muslim voters in Bihar as well as few years after in whole India. Laloo ji gives message to Muslims indirectly what the fanatic Hindus of BJP express quite openly. SO JUST GIVE ME VOTE; otherwise peace may be broken in Bihar. Muslims have no choice but to prefer to “VOTE”for LALOO letting Bihar go to dogs.

Could it be because at one point the Hindus and Muslims of the "subcontinent" found common cause in getting rid of British colonial rule, and, memory being what it is, it's easier to remember that, than the bitter wars fought centuries earlier?
Waterdragon... naah muzzies and their muzzie league never explicitly fought for independence. Muslim League was formed to "defend" Muslim intrests.
There only one explanation why Indian politicians court Muslims: VOTES.
Entire community votes for the guy who appeases them tha most.
Waterdragon, just to echo Vikrant's comments, isn't it indicative of the Islamic mind-set that even before getting independence from the British, the first thing muslims demanded was a separate country for themselves. Interestingly, there were many muslims who did not support the Muslim League's call for partition. Their main quibble was: why should muslims settle for part of the country when they could have had the whole.
