Sania Mirza update. From the BBC, with thanks to DJ:
Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has refused to be drawn into a controversy over what she wears on court. The Muslim player had been accused by a leading cleric of wearing "indecent dress" and being a "corrupting influence on young women".
Mirza said it was "disturbing" that her dress was a subject of controversy but she would take it in her stride.
Mirza, 18 and from Hyderabad, recently became the first Indian woman to reach the fourth round of the US Open.
Mirza said on her return from the US: "Every word I speak, every skirt I wear is discussed and analysed. I have to take all this in my stride.
"Wherever I go people look at me. That's why these days I prefer to stay at home. I have to learn to live with all this."
She added: "It is quite disturbing that my dress has become the subject of controversy I don't want to say anything on this".
'Not permitted'
Haseeb-ul-hasan Siddiqui, a leading cleric of the Muslim organisation the Sunni Ulema Board, said: "The dress she wears on the tennis courts not only doesn't cover large parts of her body but leaves nothing to the imagination."

Do these bearded Mullahs have nothing better to do other than imagine the body parts of women?
Why does he not comment on the terror that his followers espouse, the poverty & ignorance in the muslim communities, istead of attacking the tennis attire of a muslim girl?
What is he afraid of? that the Muslim women will be liberted from their 7th century Islamic dogma and then demand equal place with the men in Muslim society, when the power of the Mullahs will diminish.
These Mullahs are religious terrorists - reigning terror on Muslim women, its time they took a stand and told them to get back to their caves.
Recent surveys show the most hits on ponographic links on the internet are from Islamic countries, also the largest sale of phonographic CD's are in muslim communities. That is saying something about their obsession about female body parts.
What hypocrites!these 'holy men' are!
I bet his imagination is running riot in his cave watching ponographic movies and looking at body parts of females.
I have found that I've usually managed to mentally undress both Elena Dementiava and Amelie Mauresmo well before the end of warmups. Am I a true infidel then? And given the fact that Ms Mauresmo is lesbian per rumour, does that also make me more of a perverse infidel? If so, most excellent!!
if something offends him why does he look at it. honestly, dont muslim men think of anything else other than sex and killing.
As more and more controversy arises around her, I'm becoming increasingly concerned about Sania Mirza and her future career.
Go back and reread her statements. Try reading between the lines. Try feeling her tone, her voice. It's faltering. She's scared. A thin thread of fear goes through her entire speech and is most vividuly manifested in the following sentence:
and here:Sania is learning a painful lesson. I think she gradually begins to understand where the true loyalties of her fellow Muslims lay. They're not with her. In Islam, the concept of personal loyalty isn't nearly as powerful as in the secularized cultures. What matters the most is loyalty to the word of God who has banned all possible displays of a female pride. When it comes to standing for Sania or standing for Islam, her friends make an abhorrent but fairly predictable choice: to stand for Islam. No one wants to be called an apostate.
But, alas, that's not the worst part.
It is at this age when having support in one's endeavours matters the most. The values and aspirations of a young mind haven't been shaped completely yet, and that's why encouragement from the closest people plays a crucial role in one's future career. Sania needs exactly that.
And she doesn't get it an ounce of it.
Her own father, who once encouraged her to begin playing tennis, now seems to agree with the members of Ulema. See more here: http://www.acage.org/news/?day=09062005&id=0004 He wants Women's Tennis Association to twist its regulations to allow Sania to wear proper Muslim clothing. Now, having said that, just imagine what happens behind the walls of Sania's house. She faces DAILY pressure from her closest relatives to start behaving 'properly', like a 100%-vagina Muslim woman is supposed to. And there is a great likelihood she'll give in, for a father's authority is the greatest.
Hence, I am becoming increasingly afraid that the controversy about 'virtue' and 'vice' will boil down to Sania not only complying to her father's impudent demands, but also giving up on Tennis altogether, so as to avoid its 'corrupting influence'.
...for nothing should stay in the way of Islam.

Jim: Amelie Mauresmo? Well, no, but it makes you a fellow of very unusual tastes. Frankly, I think her figure is the least desirable I have ever seen. In general, tennis does not seen to produce particularly glamorous or attractive women, and I personally am more interested in their playing (old Navratilova fan here...)
Dolphin, excellent analysis.
Good for her! The main thing is her parents are behind her Hopefully she'll take British nationality as we need some British tennis players!
Get the hell out of that backward cesspool. You don't have to declare apostasy, but get to Europe, England or Canada. If she is lesbian, she really needs to get the hell out. Maybe she can be friends with Manji.
"That's why these days I prefer to stay at home. I have to learn to live with all this."
She added: "It is quite disturbing that my dress has become the subject of controversy I don't want to say anything on this".
I pray to G-d she has good bodyguards. My heart ges out to her for having to live in fear because of these morons.
These Muslims are as emotionally developed as five year olds -- the world revolves around me, me, me!
So they expect the WTA to change the rules to allow "proper Muslim clothing"? How can anyone expect to run around a court in all that drapery? But then I'm sure they know that it would be impossible. She wouldn't be able to play at a competitive level, and would have to give up. That's the real plan. The "proper Muslim dress" is not about modesty, it's a prison to stick women in. It prevents them from participating in life fully and from enjoying themselves. It's subjugation.
Londogirl what! You want to give UK citizenship to a Hyderabadi Muslim family?? I'd w8 6 years for mine. Think again...
PI, India is not a backward cesspool as you put it. Its a free country, ofcourse its another matter that Muslims choose to live the way they live.
P.S ia786, yestaday was crap with all the rain at Oval, gah i'm gonna sue England and Wales Cricket board for a refund.
PI.. India aint a backward cesspool as u put it, its a free country. Its nother matter that Muslims choose to live in backwardness. I doubt whether any Muslim prick will dare to harm her, India isnt Pakistan where they jail female athletes for racing with men or any other Muslim country.
P.S ia786, yestaday was crap will all the rain. I'm gonna sue ECB for a refund.
It's a shame that Sania doesn't take a page out of Ayian Hirsi Ali(pardon the spelling)and use her controversy to enlighten the women subjected to the yoke of Islam.
Il Toscano
she must be quite attractive. she is behaving in a perfectly legal manner and according to the rules of tennis. that is really all that matters here in a free society like india's.
of course some guys get aroused when watching her, but that is the guys' problem. we can't micro-manage womens' lives like islam tries to do by telling women what to wear. some women are just incredibly beautiful and men need to learn how to deal with it without getting "turned on". i know it sounds impossible for men but men need to realize that women by and large are not sexually turned at all by the way men dress. so men, quit being taken to the cleaners by your own lusts that are not reciprocated in the female gender. the lusts of the flesh are just not there in women like they are in men. women simply are not capable of it without considerable coaxing from men.
men, your lusts of the flesh will always be there, but men you do not have to let lust take control.
however, the game of tennis also requires a freedom of movement that is accomodated by skimpy outfits. therefore, the needs of the game should take precedence over modesty. she should be able to wear whatever is practical and stylish for the game of tennis. i think the ancient olympians were completely nude, so go figure. there is something about athletics and skimpy dress that is completely within the pale.
if she added some style to the outfit, then ok and allright and so be it.
some men cannot help but be tempted by such dress, but men are generally animals when it comes to sexual desire.
islam tries to capitalize on this male weakness for sex by promising the male terrorists 72 virgins if acts of terror are committed. what a carrot and stick approach. what a cruel sham.
therefore, it would seem that sania mirza is infringing upon islam's game plan for creating terrorists and the control over sexual activity that is vital to the sublimated training of terrorists.
i am not promoting pornography in tennis to help overthrow islam, but then tennis is not pornography.
i say let the girl wear next to nothing and let the men drool if they must. men need to learn how to control themselves sooner or later anyway. sure women are beautiful, but men must try to think of sex in a more clinical and businesslike manner like women do. it's "only" sex and nudity, right guys? get a grip, guys.
that said, but in defense of men, men can't hardly help but lust after such beauty when men have 10 to 15 times the testosterone and therefore 10 to 15 times the sex drive of women. just my humble opinion. so women can really sandbag men in the realm of sex. but men, you need to learn to control yourselves nonetheless and not go so far as to ever insist on the use of burkas for women like muslims do or other insane tactics to counter the natural attraction between the sexes.
listen to realanswers.net,
I agree with your assessment of Muslim men's inability to control their sexual urges. However, I can not agree with your suggestion that "men must try to think of sex in a more clinical and businesslike manner like women do. it's "only" sex and nudity, right guys?".
What about passion and love? I love my wife dearly and she turns me on more than anyone. It would be a shame to reduce our love making to a business process where we start with step a, then proceed to step b, then step c... What fun is that?
But maybe that's just the Italian man in me.
Let's not forget that she is, in her words, a "devoted Muslim".
She claims that she prays to Mecca five times a day.
She may also support Jihad.
From seeing her interviews during the Open, she struck me as a rather typical Muslim, except for her skill and beauty.
She needs to be asked about her views on "militant Islam".
OTOH, if her appearance diturbs Muslims, I'm for it.
