Terrorists and terrorism celebrated in Gaza

The headline of this Reuters piece (thanks to Sr. Soph) is "Pictures change as Gazans wipe memories of Israel," but the story itself reveals that the Palestinian Arabs are not so much wiping out memories of Israel, but are celebrating the memories of jihadist "martyrs" who they think are responsible for their victory:

NEVE DEKALIM, Gaza Strip, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Paintings of Palestinians killed in a nearly five-year-old uprising are already daubed on the walls of Gaza's former Jewish settlements.

Arabic slogans now cover the graffiti left by Israeli soldiers.

Even before the rubble of the settlements is cleared to allow new building, Palestinians are trying to erase the memory of the Israelis who completed their pullout from the Gaza Strip on Monday after 38 years of occupation.

"We wanted to make what was unacceptable look nice and acceptable," said Taha Abu Ghali, heading a group of artists decorating the concrete sniper wall outside the biggest settlement of Neve Dekalim.

"We want to share our people's joy," he added.

The 10-metre murals now covering the settlement walls are very much in the traditional school of the "martyr" paintings that are one of the few flashes of colour in Gaza's drab cinderblock cities and refugee camps.

Earnest-faced young men with wispy moustaches, beards and assault rifles predominate -- portraits of militants, many of them killed while attacking Jewish settlements.

Another regular feature is the gold-roofed Dome of the Rock mosque, a symbol of Jerusalem and the uprising since 2000, which militants say brought about the pullout from Gaza.

Abu Ghali's team painted a picture of an Israeli notebook with the page "Gaza" torn out and two further pages bearing the words "West Bank" and "Jerusalem" left, representing the other territories Palestinians want for their state.

It's just more brownie points for Ariel Sharon. Tactically, the best political decision of his life was pulling out of Gaza which is rapidly descending into anarchy. I've heard the Palestinians have gone with the begging bowl to EUrabia again. It's not even begging actually - most beggars say please and thankyou. They've demanded money, cos it's their right, innit?

The synagogues were the first to go but the Arab Christians will be persecuted next. Peace Activist and president of the National Christian Coalition Dimitri Diliani explained "Although historically, Christians led the armed struggle, we have been pursuing a more peaceful strategy. And since the role of of non-violent movements has been shrinking, our role in Palestinian politics has also been shrinking."

Atallah Mansour, and Israeli-Arab author of a book about Chrisians in the Holy Land said "When you have chaos, the first victims will be the weak elements, in this case, the Christians." I expect some of the 50,000 Christians remaining in Palestine will be forced to flee at some stage.

Londongirl,

Obviously, you would expect them to celebrate a little bit wouldn't you. It is only natural, I don't worry aboout that.

The things to worry about are the delusional notions that they can wrest the rest of the land.

Also for the Pals the element of "normality" i.e IDF breathing down their necks has changed overnite. It will take some getting used to. The Pals will have growing pains...that is only to be expected.

Give them some room & time....they need to get their act together.... Kapish & Salaam.

naseem

Where is this "Palestine" you speak of? I've never known of a nation by that name to have ever existed. What is their history? Their borders? When and how did it come to sovereignty? How are they distinct from any of their surrounding countries? What is the official language? What wars have they fought? Enlighten me.

By the way, soon we may have kangaroo courts hanging Jews for the crime of being Jewish in "Palestinian" territory. Sounds far fetched, you say? Well, maybe it is, maybe it isn't.

Palestine was a convenient term, MZ. You're right, of course.
