This report from the Associated Press would have the reader believe that the role of "zealotry" is a motivating factor in Islamic terrorism distinct from nationalism and a sense of humiliation. The dots, which the mainstream media refuses to connect, are that all three factors (zealotry - zeal for Islamic supremacy, nationalism - a world dominated by the supremacy of Islam, and humiliation - the recognition that Islam hasn't achieved supremacy) comprise the jihadist motivation.
A bomb strapped to his abdomen, Rafat Moqadi walked into a Tel Aviv restaurant and saw a woman dining with her two little girls. "Seeing that, I decided not to carry out the operation. I couldn't do it," he said.
Was Mr. Moqadi's decision an act of humaneness or did he lack a sufficient devotion to the jihad doctrine?
It may never be known if the following is just jailhouse bravado, but Mr. Moqadi's comments confirm beliefs held by committed jihadists. And, those beliefs have their origin in the Qur'an.
Yet, Moqadi said he longed for what he believes awaits a suicide bomber in the hereafter — God's reward and a special place in heaven for martyrs. "He has a life in paradise...He doesn't die."(*)A rare jailhouse interview with the would-be suicide bomber revealed a common thread running through the rising worldwide phenomenon: Most attackers are driven not by poverty or ignorance, but by a lethal mix of nationalism, zealotry and humiliation.
But religion is only part of the picture. Moqadi said that wasn't his motivation.
Mr. Moqadi claims the main reason for his bombing attempt was to resist the Israeli occupation. If religion wasn't the motivating factor then why did he long to become a martyr, where "a special place in heaven" is reserved? Mr. Moqadi clearly understands what the Qur'an states and his paraphrase (*) of Sura 3 verse 169 is proof of that.
"And reckon not those who are killed in Allah's way as dead; nay, they are alive (and) are provided sustenance from their Lord" [3:169]
His last-second doubt in no way invalidates the Qur'anic dictums towards jihad.

So much for the idea that the suicide bomber loves death. No. He wouldn't do it if he didn't think that murdering infidels gets him eternal life in heaven. He doesn't love death. He's trying to butt to the front of the line in his imagined eternal life of carnal pleasures. He is utterly and completely selfish. He only cares about himself. The reason that these folks are so common among the middle classes is that it is the beorgeousie who have had the chance to experience the pleasures that this life has to offer, and having experienced them, they are disillusioned and bored and sated. They crave more sensation and Muhammad promised it to them. Maybe that is why they so despise westerners for their "decadence". It's projection pure and simple. Noone can hold a candle to these guys in terms of their decadence. They are the moral equivalent of snuff-film pornographers.

For "nationalism" I would substitute "imperialism", since nationalism is a modern Western concept that has evolved in tension with imperialism, which is an expansionist concept.
Caroline is correct to see the cognitive dissonance involved with that jihadist's wish to die in order to get eternal life. It's called eschatology -- a concept that has become largely dusty and forgotten in our modern, jazzy West, but which still beats zealously in the breasts of these mujahideen.

Humiliation that Islam has not gained supremacy over the non-believers of the rest of the world? That Islam has lagged behind in mathematics, science, medicine, art, music and cultural advancements? When will they realize that the reason they are inferior in these regards is because of Islam? It is not that the rest of the world has succeeded that they are humiliated, it is because Islam has failed. The reason for that failure is because Islam is a lie, Mohammed was a false prophet and Allah is not God.
Moqadi, who is serving a 14-year sentence in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba, said he graduated high school and worked with his brothers laying tile before joining the Hamas militant group in 2002. The soft-spoken 26-year-old with neatly cropped hair said he did so in response to massive gunbattles between Israeli forces and Palestinians in Jenin.
Now, Moqadi spends most of his time in jail learning to speak, read and write Hebrew, the language of the Jewish state. Islam, he said, teaches that it's important to "know your enemy."

Bohemond, that's a tall order. Most Muslims would likely go stark raving mad at the brink of that abyss where Islam is no longer the Absolute Truth. Actually, perhaps they are already constantly at the edge of that abyss -- which would explain their normal, daily madness, constantly striving (the "greater jihad") to keep at bay the doubts and fears, concerning that Absolute Truth, that deep down nag and gnaw at them, and transferring all that anxious energy into lashing out in hatred and violence at the Other.

I am thrilled this would be murderer had second thoughts -- But it only means he wasn't Muslim enough to carry out his Islamic outreach program... Obviously he wasn't a fervent enough Muslim, he clearly lacked sufficent faith in Islam...
It's great that his faith faltered at the last minute. It's great that the murder doctrine of his "Prophet" was temporarily swept aside... but....
This good man means well(he actually has managed to hold onto at least part of his humanity which I am thankful for, although his mosque imam won't be), but I suspect he may not truly comprehend Islam completely.
In truth, Islam strips its followers of all aspects of their identity and in short converts them into killer-zombies. They are taught killing is virtuous and necessary in Islamic practice and in life in general. Most of life in the Islamic nations revolves around that. Anyone who spends any time in the Middle East has witnessed religious executions aplenty--they are accepted as a part of 'normal' life in this region. WHch proves that Islam is designed to strip humans of their innate taboo against killing other humans (except in self-defense which may still be repulsive to most people).
That is what imams INTEND when they lecture at mosques (I've viewed plenty of bootlegged films of imams sermonzing their congregations to know what is being done). The anger these people are madee to feel faclitiates the act of killing and warring.
Nationalism, and a feeling of vicitmization are fed to these people in the hopes of getting Muslims to kill. In short Islam creates a target 'infidels' so that killing be perpetuated. It has been so for 14 centuries so far. Who knows for how many more...
