Al-Qaida hideout discovered near Riyadh

A-Q continues to demonstrate that it no longer considers binding its agreement to leave Saudi Arabia alone and only wage jihad in other countries. Which does not mitigate one bit Saudi complicity in helping them wage that jihad elsewhere. From UPI, with thanks to Sr. Soph:

Saudi security forces found in a Riyadh suburb an arms depot and bomb-making facilities believed to belong to the al-Qaida network, reports said Tuesday.

The daily al-Watan reported that security forces had tracked down a militant hideout in a residential neighborhood in the city of Kharg, 70 kilometers (43 miles) from Riyadh.

"The place was used to stock up arms and manufacture explosives," the paper said.

Police seized chemicals and recipes for making explosives as well as communications equipment from the site.

And where are the arms and bomb-making equipment now? Of course our friends and allies the Saudis will have destroyed tem - wont they?

thomas ato:

And where did they obtain the materials in the first place? (I have no idea as to what kind of domestic chemical production capacities are located within Saudi Arabia. Would be most interesting if the country of origin turned out to be Iraq.)

In late 1978 [or was it 1979?], Islamic "insurgents" took over the Great Mosque of Mecca. The Islamists were alleged by press reports to be angry over Saudi royal family "corruption." In order to put down this uprising, the Saudis brought in infidels [normally banned from Mecca], French commandos, and the Islamist control of the holiest of Muslim holy places lasted for only about three weeks altogether. Since then, this incident has disappeared down the memory hole. Indeed, it was a forewarning of more bloodshed to come. Has there been any subsequent study or evaluation of this episode and why has it been hushed up for the past 26 years?? Was it too embarassing for the House of Saud? Or did it embarass Islam, especially since French commandos came in to put the uprising down in their holiest holy place? Maybe it would embarass the Arabs to be shown fighting among themselves instead of against Israel. Or who knows?
