The Indonesian Islamic party supports the decision to reduce the prison sentence of Abu Bakar Bashir, the convicted conspirator in the 2002 Bali bombing that killed over two hundred people. From the AFP, with thanks to Sr. Soph:
Under a presidential decree all well-behaved prisoners are eligible for two annual sentence cuts, one to mark Independence Day and another to mark the main Islamic religious holiday later this year."From early on, the trial process against Abu Bakar Bashir has given rise to many doubts," Prosperous Justice Party secretary general Anis Matta was quoted by the state Antara news agency as saying on Saturday.
Suspicions of Mr. Bashir's involvement in terror strikes prior to the 2002 Bali attacks include a series of bombings directed against Christian churches in 2000 that left eighteen people dead and the 2003 bombing of the Mariott hotel in Jarkata that left fourteen people dead.
The "doubts" of Mr. Bashir's involvement or at least his support of such atrocities should be of no concern at all considering statements made by the good cleric. This one made in the aftermath of the 2002 Bali attacks stated, "Imam Samudra, Mukhlas, Amrozi and his friends are not terrorists either, they are fighters of the army of God," and this quote concerning the recent October 1st Bali attacks said, "These saddening incidents, in essence, are warnings, scolding from Allah to us all who are not respecting his sharia." Declarations such as these are indicative of Mr. Bashir's position and to question his involvement is being disingenuous at best.
Mr Matta said remission should be granted, if only on humanitarian grounds."Bashir is an old vulnerable man and therefore on humanitarian grounds we agree with the Government's plan to accord him a sentence reduction," he said.
The humanity of the 202 victims, whose killings were supported by this vulnerable old man, is not mentioned at all.
The problem is the Indonesian Government.
Case in point: the three women who were convicted of teaching Sunday school to consensual youth were each given a 3-year prison sentence. By contrast,this radical cleric Abu Bakr Ba’asyir, convicted of conspiracy in the 2002 bombing that left more than two-hundred dead, was given six months less time behind bars.
Of course, the three church volunteers shouldn’t complain. They got a slap on the wrist compared to a 27-year-old Australian beauty school student, who received a 20-year sentence in an Indonesian court for supposedly smuggling nine pounds of marijuana into the country).
All of these sentences were handed down in 2005, three years after a horrific and coordinated attack that ended the lives of hundreds of people, mostly tourists at the resort area in Bali.
To summarize: Three years for teaching Sunday school, twenty years for transporting nine pounds of pot… and two and a half years for successfully conspiring to kill hundreds of innocents. Now there’s a religion that’s got its priorities straight!
Indonesia, a Muslim nation, either condones or is afraid of (tries to appease) Islamic Jihad.
Either way they are not our friends or ally.
Something to think about if a future relief effort is required.

Our chicken-shit-government reprimands our fishermen if they take vigilant actions, instead of sending out cannon-boats to blow the Indo-pirates out of the water.
I feel sorry for the Balinese. Another 50 years and they are also either dead or "reverted"- as in perverted to Islam...

The Australian Government has been throwing money at the problem of Indonesia for decades now. What you're seeing now is purely to be expected. As with Schapelle Corby's case, the result could be expected - one piece of circumstantial evidence and nobody else handy for their pound of flesh. She got 20 years even though she was swimming in reasonable doubt (if the case had been tried in Aust., USA, UK, Canada, NZ, etc. it would have been thrown out based purely on the way fed police commish Mick Keelty was shooting his mouth off).

Don't start? Were they telling me to stop? I'd been boycotting all things Indonesian since 1999 (their feelings were made clear enough with the demonstrations outside the since-bombed Australian Embassy when we tried to break up their little Machete 'n' Massacre party in East Timor). Should we not all have been boycotting them since Kissinger was sent to sell them down the river in 1975?
Why is it that we keep giving money to this country? Is it protection? Are we afraid that they'll invade us? I say it's time to take a gamble (the way that Hank should've back in '75) and cut them off. If they're short on cash and can't run a national economy then they'll have to make money the traditional, Muslim way. If they want to come and take the cookie jar by force then let them stretch themselves out for the F/A-18s and F-111s in our Northern Deserts while giving the world an object lesson about the tradions of Islam.
Razorskarr : The Indo's, who needed all of our hard earned Aussie taxes (kindly donated by the Limp Wristed Conservative gov't - but hey if it were the Lefty's we'd all be Islamic by now) after the tidal wave/earthquake disaster - actually have war planes that would shoot our F-1-11's and other Yanky purchased planes our of the sky.
Last year the Indonesians ordered the best war planes in the world - from Russia, and they leave the US planes behind.
In fact to counter it, we have ordered some new high tech models that the US has designed to counter it - but delivery is some way off.
As for invasion - they can't do, conventionally at least. The only country capable of maintaining an invasion of Australia from the north is the USA, and by around 2010 - China. Our country is just to darn big and the supply lines would be impossible.
That said - we do have the world's biggest Uranium deposits in Northern Australia, huge oil reserves in the Great Barrier Reef (which the Muslims wouldn't give a s%^t about), coal reserves that will last over 500 years, and some of the worlds biggest Iron, magnesium, and Bauxite reserves, not to mention gold. If Indonesia wanted them, they could come over and grab it any time they like (like they do with our Northern Fishing Grounds). Plus the Indo's would also get HUGE support from the Islamic world (could you imagine them salivating over all that nuclear bomb potential uranium??). The USA (as much as I like them) would NOT come to our aid. Why? Indonesia represents a HUGE consumer market for US goods compared to Australia (the Indo's actually have more middle class earners than the entire population of Australia - Indonesia only has extreme poverty because of wealth distribution). Remember how “coy” the US was with East Timor? This was the VERY reason why. Thanks to our current firearm laws, unlike the “home front” situation that the Japanese faced in WW2 (it was estimated that every Australian household in the north right down to Brisbane owned at least ONE rifle, hence invading us would be to costly for the Jap's - just on civilian resistance alone), our entire population is now disarmed. We are sitting (fat) ducks. Oh and under that Indo loving poof PM, Paul Keating, I believe the majority of our .223 ammo for the Styer Rifles in our army is now made not in Australia, but in Indonesia where it is cheaper!
Besides that, the US armed forces are already at their limits. With only around 5000 front line ground troops, no nuclear weapons, and no guarantee that the US would support us in the event of invasion (look at what NATO did to the Serbs who fought Hitler in WW2 back in the ‘90’s), well in short - we have to brown nose the Indonesians!
A more likely scenario for invasion would be a series of container ships would arrive with "refugees" outside each of our major coastal cities (where the majority of our ignorant infidel population lives). These “refugees” would seek "asylum" at the same time as the “Australian” Muslims will be rioting and rebelling in our streets due to our “persecution” of them. Suddenly the containers in the ships reveal their "cargo" everything from small arms to helicopter gun ships with Muslims at the helm. Jihadi’s flood into the country, which in the long become “oppressed” refugees (like Palestine) and demand full voting rights in any government the UN forms to re “stabilize” Australia.
Under our "Mutual Protection Pact" that the former Labor (Lefty) Gov't signed with Indonesia, which allows each country to put troops on each other's soil to help "stabilize" a "situation", with UN approval and help, Indonesian Troops (trained by Aussie soldiers which Howard allows to THIS DAY), will arrive on our soil, in all of our major cities. Their legitimacy will be the UN AND the treaty that our government (Hawke/Keating) signed in the late 80’s.
To solve the problem, the UN determines that a vote on Australia's gov't will be held in 5 years time, which is just enough time for large amounts of Muslim immigration, and plenty of infidel "conversion or die" time. The "caretaker" government will be selected by the UN - and will comprise of a balance of infidels AND Muslims, with a Muslim PM. Oil money will flow in like a flood. Infrastructure will be restored, and Muslims and infidels will LOVE the Muslim PM. The Muslim PM is eventually elected.
Australia is now an Islamic "heaven". The US in it's foolishness loses a valuable, resource rich, strategically located ally. Only when the Muslims re-start Australia's long lost nuclear program, does the US realise that a terrible mistake has been made.
With the help of Australia's uranium, oil, and iron, financed with our gold, just about every Muslim nation now has nukes. The rest is history.....
